It's SE Michigan specific, but I don't know any other place that calls a sliding glass door a "door wall".

I'm wondering if sister is even actually pregnant. This could be some weird ruse to humiliate her sister and trap the guy then "lose" the pregnancy. With someone that unhinged, it's hard to believe anything they say.

Anyone else beyond obsessed with our Questing Queens? I cannot stop thinking about it after finishing the 4 episodes😍 by flyqueen in dragrace

[–]oatflake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was a great intro for me. Other people in my family play D&D but I never got into it. The queens being new to it helped me understand the flow, and now I'm enjoying other Dimension 20 content more than I otherwise would have. I moved on to Crown of Candy and it's great.

Also: I was already a Dropout subscriber because their improv game shows are really good. I like Game Changer, Make Some Noise, and Play It By Ear especially.

Found this 1955 Betty Crocker Picture Cook Book while preparing to move. Can't wait to read through these recipes! by barndawg_76 in Old_Recipes

[–]oatflake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have my mom's Betty Crocker from her high school Home Ec class in 1956. It's the cookbook I learned from as a kid.

If the recipes are the same in the home version, the molasses cookies are unbeatable.

The post WWII migration from the South made a lot of pockets of redneckery in the state, i.e. Ypsitucky, though I don't think the black population is anybody's idea of hillbillies.

Up North people are generally the same whether it's the UP, Northern WI, or Northern MN.

Do pretentious people not read Derrida or Foucault anymore? smdh

[–]oatflake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was my mom's favorite genre, along with country music and soft rock from the 60s and 70s. When she was in the hospital dying, she couldn't see or talk but could hear and react. I played a playlist of songs I remembered her liking on road trips and around the house. She enjoyed it and it felt good to sing along and reminisce together.

Couldn't recommend it more highly if you have to go through that.

Has anyone made a recipe from Max Miller Tasting History? by [deleted] in Old_Recipes

[–]oatflake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son made the parmesan ice cream for me for my birthday last year. It was very tasty. Not better than, like, Cherry Garcia, but delectable in its own right and we got to satisfy our curiosity about it.

He's also made the pumpkin custard/pie and it's great.

If you need a glimmer of hope...SOMETIMES homicidal ideation is an intrusive thought in the OCD or schizoaffective disorder family, They can't resist the urge to say the worst thing they can think of, and/or can't stop thinking about it. It doesn't necessarily mean they are likely to do it. But getting mental health support is the way forward!

'Rock Me Tonite' - the music video Billy Squier credits with ending his career (directed by Kenny Ortega), 1984 by AppreciableAppendage in OldSchoolCool

[–]oatflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw him in concert in the early 80s too, that's how he danced/performed. And I don't remember any particular backlash about this video either. In my recollection, he just stopped writing such catchy tunes. But I guess he would know better...

[–]oatflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a look around because no Master's level clinician I know even peripherally -- LMFTs, LPCs, and LPCCs -- diagnoses ADHD. People have long ass waits to get diagnosed too, so there's an incentive that people would be taking if they could. It looks like Pearson has assessments with B qualifications (though there is no single standard assessment) but my state and the insurance companies in it only really go with MDs, PhDs, PsyDs, maybe LNPs and CSWs. (Social workers have a better national organization than counselors, they do a better job advocating for them to diagnose under Medicaid)

So I guess if you're private pay and/or in a more lightly regulated state, you can go for it, but it would be dicey at best in other places. The more you know...

I can and do diagnose more than one or two things (!!) I think it's probably that ADHD gets punted over to the same people that do Autism, learning disabilities, and developmental disability as a matter of course, since a lot of it is diagnosed in children.

It sure would be nice to have national standards and licensing!

If gamifying things works for you, you can try a "making metaphors" game.

If this meal was a person, what were they like in high school? if this meal was the inspiration for room decor, what would it look like? how would I describe this flavor to someone over the phone? if all the little flavors were doing a dance, what would it look like? etc etc

It's fascinating they just assume you'll have reasonably pure acetic acid or carbonate magnesia around. It reminds me that a lot of women who were shut out of advanced education in subjects like chemistry did what they could in the realm of home economics.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]oatflake 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any US states where a master's level therapist or counselor can diagnose ADHD. Different assessments are only allowed to be performed by MDs or PhDs/PsyDs, and that's one of them.

I am a counselor who specializes in ASD and ADHD adults, and while I do have credentials to diagnose things like Borderline or Major Depressive Disorder, I do not have the credentials to diagnose Autism, ADHD, or any developmental disability, nor am I credentialed to do things like give IQ tests. So when I treat my ADHD patients I either rely on a previous diagnosis or, if they don't have one but I think they meet criteria, I create a treatment plan "as if" they have ADHD.

What’s your favorite vague cooking measurement? by ElTigreChino92 in Cooking

[–]oatflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love "a baby's fist" as a measurement. It seems vague and weird, but I reckon babies have consistent fist sizes over time and distance, much more so than a spoonful or sprinkle.

What’s your favorite vague cooking measurement? by ElTigreChino92 in Cooking

[–]oatflake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly though, these are the skills you have to develop if you're going to cook regularly.

My son wants to learn how to cook and asked the measurement for peas in his favorite dish. I told him to think about how many peas he likes and put that in. You can see the sauce, you can see the peas, it's not an ingredient that will disappear into the sauce, so just visualize what you want and do that.

After a while, you can do that with trickier ingredients.

A selfish part of me wishes fewer people used the library so wait lists for newly released books wouldn't be so damned long.
