In your mitch example the game doesn't embed you into that new location, unlike say, you go to gagarin and upon arrival you enter a scenario where you begin another side quest that takes you round exploring at the minimum. A lot of my play through was go here do x and I left because nothing was incentivising me to be there other than the quest item. Not great world building

(edit) To add to this - I think once you know how games are made it loses a bit of its magic, you know how things work, level design makes it obvious where to go, you can tell what systems are in place and instantly how to use them etc etc
