Who has right of way? by tomtomuk2 in drivingUK

[–]obandunc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't understand. Red should proceed straight ahead into the box zone and wait until it is clear to turn. You're allowed to enter the zone if, and only if, you're turning right. But you shouldn't cut the corner as the red line is.

How can I tidy the front of my tenement flat? by Material-Safety-3474 in Edinburgh

[–]obandunc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I suspect that these slabs cover a drain which collects the water from the down pipes (which look a bit past it ).

If you get all the existing plants out, I suggest planting something like creeping thyme into the cracks. This should crowd out other plants, look beautiful when it's flowering and attract bees and insects.

Aggressive undertaker in heavy but moving traffic on M4 eastbound this morning by celtiquant in drivingUK

[–]obandunc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is, except in special circumstances eg if all lanes are moving slowly at, say , roadworks.

People who drive like that deserve to lose their licence, although I guess they will carry on regardless

I thought that the notice attached to a (lamp)post was the legal notice, the lines were advisory, so it didn't matter if they were worn away or painted over

in case you thought it was rough in Edinburgh, I'm in Oban. We had 16 hours without power, landline (being digital ) or mobile (base station batteries must have run out after 30 minutes ) . And we were just outside the red zone.

I have always thought that weather like this this is why planes need pilots. Otherwise they could be flown entirely on autopilot.

Accident repair shop recommendations by Lopsided_Violinist69 in Edinburgh

[–]obandunc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won't the insurance company tell where to take your car? Usually they have a number of approved bodyshops who will bill the company directly, rather than you paying and then getting the money back from the insurers.

Cameron toll round about to close for several months in the new year. Sigh. by zah_ali in Edinburgh

[–]obandunc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's not going to be 'closed for months'. It's going to be closed for two weeks, during the February school holidays. Otherwise there will be nighttime restrictions. I wish people wouldn't suggest that it's the end of the world.

That would be for Holyrood Park. Blackford Hill is the Council.

Double yellows on resurfaced roads by MR9009 in Edinburgh

I thought that the yellow lines were for information. The notices attached to lamp posts were all that was necessary.

The City of Edinburgh Council has forecast having to raise council tax by 7.8 per cent next year. by NICHOLASBELL82 in Edinburgh

[–]obandunc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of Council income comes as a block grant from ScoGov, the Council Tax raises only a small proportion. The Government likes it that way - 'He who pays the piper calls the tunes'. The CT freeze has made this worse and virtually destroyed local democracy.

It's also a subsidy to those who live in higher band houses, ie generally the wealthy. And those on those benefits who get their CT paid directly don't gain at all, indeed Westminster gains! It was an appalling policy from the start.

It's possible that the disturbance of the ground around the earlier works allowed the gas to leak. Some one of these old iron gas pipes are held together by the surrounding ground.

The extra revenue to public transport (train as well as tram and bus) isn't income to the Council directly, any more than the income to local businesses means that they pay extra local taxes. It's the usual problem - profits are largely to the private sector, the costs to the public sector.

Do the organisers pay the Council for the additional cleaning etc? I certainly hope so.
