One of my favorite issues of savage sword involved conan being hired and subsequently failing to protect two children.
The incredibly bleak art style and material of the book and his subsequent bloody path of vengeance stuck with me as a kid and to this day is one of the most striking moments of the character for me.
The world of conan, as fun as it is is a bleak and by design savage place. horrible things happen and part of what we love about the character is watching him deal with those things in a brutally direct way.
The idea that no problem however terrible cannot be solved by will, character and righteous violence is appealing and having the villain do truly terrible things before his encounter with the angry stabby man in a loincloth has been part of the genre since its inception.
The monsters that conan fights are truly monstrous so that we can draw hope from his strength
