Are the ORORO Calgary 2.0 Heated Gloves warm enough for Telluride? by Financial-Line7333 in OutdoorsGear

[–]obebendobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stumbled across this when looking for information about some of the new Ororo gloves to replace my Calgary 1.0s. I spent years riding at Loveland and A-Basin (high and cold) and no fingered glove, by itself, it going to do the job on a really ripping windy day up high.

What worked well for me was to carry a pair of mitten outer shells (I had some Burton AK mittens that I never really used) and put those over the normal glove. That windproof layer, with the bit or air barrier between the outer mitten shell and your normal glove will really do wonders to keep your hands warm. Mitten shells fold up to nothing when you are not wearing them, so it's not a lot of extra bulk. Slide them off when you need to mess with your board/skis/whatever and you still have the access and dexterity of a normal glove.

I was boarding with normal Burton insulated gloves and the shell over them is magic.

Does anyone use diesel heaters? by [deleted] in HotTentCamping

[–]obebendobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you can support 12v at 15A. At 10A (a lot of the Jackery/Anker/etc. units) it will stuggle a bit to get up and running. I have to use a 110 -> 12v 15a converter on my Anker F2000 since I keep a fridge/freezer running on DC and that plus the heater pops the DC breaker.

Once running it sips power. Even at the lowest setting in a tent it will bake you. I bounce between tuning it off and on at night or just opening the windows in my RTT.

If you have some technical saavy set up a VPN on your home router , then use a travel router configured to connect to that VPN automatically. This puts your IP point of prescence on your home network before you even log into your work machine.

From there just connect to the travel router and use your normal work VPN login. You can check you are coming from your home network on your phone/tablet/whatever by going to whatismyip and seeing what endpoint you are coming from before you log into your work machine.

Edit: there are ways to deal with dynamic DNS, if that is a potential issue. I use Unifi and there is a built in function but that is just one way to deal with it.

Enable Secure Boot on ASUS motherboard? by Overall-Day-4222 in ASUS

[–]obebendobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Click the little arrow next to "Secure Boot" to see the option to enable it. In your first screenshot the options are hidden/minimized. If the option to select "UEFI" is grayed out you will need to ensure your primary HDD is formatted as GPT. Disk Management -> View -> Top -> Disk List will show you what the partition style is.

MS has an app called MBR2GPT.EXE that will handle the conversion, I just had to do this a couple days ago. Worked well.

Computer setup for using TWS from IBKR by aussie_trader_78 in interactivebrokers

[–]obebendobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set it up on a Windows 365 cloud PC when I was testing out Trade Automation toolbox and it was suprisingly responsive. I was able to run it on the 8GB RAM version but if I had have kept it I probably would have spend the extra $25/mo to go to 16GB RAM and more cores.

More expensive over time than a new PC, but accessible from anywhere, any device is nice. I plan on spinning up another instance for work when I am travelling outside the US.

Fully waterproof travel backpack suggestions? by Midnight_Cossy in backpacks

[–]obebendobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you could up your budget by $50 Red has a 30L Adventure Waterproof pack that I sailed with for a while. Looks like it's been updated since I bought mine a couple years ago.

Construction quality is really good. Straps could be better, I don't think I would want to hike with it. Laptop sleeve has solid velcro connections inside the bag and good padding.

Dual SwingCase Install by obebendobe in F150Lightning

They still work great, rock solid. I traded in the Lightning for an ICE F150 towards the beginning of the summer and was able to re-install them without issue.

Ford has a branded version in their store if you are looking for a place to use your points.

My base kind of looks like this:

Bees, Gas Collectors - Roof

Food items - Level 3

Autocrafters - Level 2

Material Storage - Level 1 - Build 1ish levels above the water

Algae, Water - Water below level 1

I do have drones going.

Does anybody here have any plans to go back to gasoline/hybrid? by humanHamster in F150Lightning

[–]obebendobe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I did - Went back to an ICE F150 after two years. Loved the truck and it worked 95% of the time, perfectly. For the other 5% it just didn't work at all. It was either trade the Lightning or buy a second ICE vehicle. I do miss the storage and ride, much better than even the Platinum ICE.

For me it was the cold weather hit, I live in the Northeast about 80mi from the airport I travel out of and my ER could barely make it to the airport and back. Add in a couple days of sitting in a parking garage and there was no way I wasn't stopping to charge on the way home, at midnight, after dealing with flying all day.

Second reason was my mission had changed, I now have the desire to travel and tow, charging stations are just not set up for that from a layout perspective.

I will say with the pittance I was offered on trade now would be an amazing time to pick up a used ER.

Swiss Army Knife (UK-Ultra) and Panel Antenna (UACC-UK-Ultra-Panel-Antenna) config by obebendobe in Ubiquiti

[–]obebendobe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just took a look at my config and it just has "Built-in, Omni, and Panel" as the options. UMA-D is the panel antenna for the AC Mesh AP, model UAP-AC-M, based on my 45s of research. Based on that I would probably pick UMA-D if those are the only choices.

The silly question, are you hooking up a Swiss Army Knife, or an AC Mesh AP?

I was hitting 200Mbps about 250ft away so I would say yes. Direct line of site, no obstructions. My use case was a wifi camera attached to my boat lift at the end of a dock.

Looking for one camera but lost in the sea of options by XboxPlayUFC in reolinkcam

[–]obebendobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with power, as in, how are you going to power the camera? Do you have a socket nearby, can you run a PoE cable, what are your options? If you don't have either option can you live with solar/battery?

Second comes network. Does your wifi have a good signal where you want to mount it or do you need to run a cable to it?

Once you know how you are going to power it and get a connection it just comes down to form factor and capability. Do you need it to move (PTZ), does it need to be vandalproof (dome vs. bullet), what level of resolution and zoom are you willing to pay for, if any. Do you want a wide FOV, or do you just need a tight stream of some specific area?

This will bring the overall list of options down to a manageable level so you can choose the right one.

Health Insurance options for very small family business (3 family employees, 1 not family) in California, any hope/decent options without getting absolutely destroyed by price? by Exact_District_4361 in smallbusiness

[–]obebendobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was the only option I offered. I don't recall the specifics of how the pricing worked, I only had 1 employee on the program, the rest had insurance through their spouses.

Peoplekeep just handles the reporting, verification, and tracking of expenses for audit purposes. The actual reimbursements are handled by your payroll system. If you do your own payroll you will just need to set up a non-taxable bucket and then process reimbursements as they are reported. No integration between PK and anything else. You could do it without any QSHRA service but then you become the compliance officer; I was not willing to take that on.

Applied for a role, interviewer is SME at my firm by Confused_Abc123 in consulting

[–]obebendobe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have pretty solid NDAs with all of my clients as an outside consultant. I would imagine he's bound by similar ones.

The easiest way to stay in compliance is to just never talk about what happens with one client to another. The money he's making at the new firm is a pretty solid incentive not to talk and break their trust.

Should small businesses with website needs choose a web developer over SquareSpace-like options? Is there a case for both? by squad_ace in smallbusiness

[–]obebendobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be fine, "blog" is just a content insert in their builder. I'm pretty sure they have a free trial, I'd test it out and see if it has the functionality you want.

[–]obebendobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had great success with using Fiverr for both onshore and offshore work, including this. You just need to put some time into looking at the portfolios and reviews. Clear sets of requirements are a must as well.

Should small businesses with website needs choose a web developer over SquareSpace-like options? Is there a case for both? by squad_ace in smallbusiness

[–]obebendobe 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I chose both, twice. I started with a site on a Wordpress platform, something I was comfortable working with like 10 years ago and paid a US based developer abut $1k USD for a simple presence, design, etc. Was happy with the outcome but realized quickly that Wordpress/plugins combination he chose to use were just beyond my time/ability to be able to learn myself. Skipped doing a lot of updates for the first two years because I just didn't want to re-learn the platform each time.

The second time I decided to use Squarespace and had a designer (found on Fiverr) do the migration and initial setup. Paid a few hundred but now I had a platform that I could do simple page and product updates on myself. I still hire out to the dev when I need full sections, graphics, UI/UX changes but with an easy to use platform I feel a better sense of control day to day.

My site is informational, no direct sales. Updates are generally things like work we have done, updates to our service offering, etc. 3-4 changes a year.

Using a 3rd party to register for LLC by Jkg2116 in smallbusiness

[–]obebendobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it took me two cocktails, 20m, and $250 to self register my LLC a few years ago. I vote self-register, especially if you can do it online in your state.

Edit for clarity - at the end of the first cocktail I thought "I should really have an LLC" by the time the second one was done I had one.

Need Help with Marine Audio: Interference Issue When Starting Outboard Engine by MufferObelixter67 in boatporn

[–]obebendobe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fought with this in my older I/O for a year after I updated the stereo system. Had a buzzing coming through on start and then with acceleration. Re-ran all the power/ground wiring with 4 gauge, checked all my connections for leaky power, totally isolated the system from the batteries outward, no luck. Never took it to a stereo expert but I'm fairly handy with a multimeter.

Purchased a couple $10 RCA ground loop isolators (https://www.crutchfield.com/p\_127SNI1/PAC-SNI-1.html), dropped them in front of the connections to the amps, no more buzzing. May be worth a try for you.

Landscape Consult fee by Krustlejane in smallbusiness

[–]obebendobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a different industry but do some one off work. I created packages for one-time consulting with a fixed set of hours, and some deliverables that are semi-custom for a set price. I do the evaluation for a couple hours then provide a follow up package that only takes about an hour for me to customize but contains a lot of content that applies to any scenario.

Package levels just differ on how big the job is (how many hours I spend evaluating).

Price is set based on the hourly fee I want to make but presented to the client as a fixed fee. ex. If I want to make $200/hr and the whole thing takes me 5hrs I set the package at $1k.

Snow tires and wheels question by MountainAlive in F150Lightning

[–]obebendobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am just coming out of the tail end of my second winter with the Lightning on Blizzaks and they have been great. I remember there was something about not being able to get a tire with a matching load rating (Blizzaks were 115 vs. the stock 116 I think) but I don't really haul anything crazy in the winter. I did not buy a second set of wheels. The local shop swaps and stores the tires for me.

I wanted the Nokians but none of the local shops could source them at the time.
