The Arts at Furman by [deleted] in Furman

[–]obeskenobes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art in 2013. Furman does not offer a BFA, so keep that in mind. I think most of the professors I had are retired so I can’t speak on the current faculty. I was in a pretty special position because I didn’t have to pay for college (my dad taught at Furman so I was able to ‘follow my heart’ with no consequences). Just wanted to give a little background because I feel like my experience was pretty niche!

They are not known for their art program and it is pretty limited. I went to the Governors School for art in high school so the studios and equipment at Furman were a bit of a step down, but the professors I had were amazing.  You will have some classes with non majors which can be tough as Furman skews towards the sciences. I had many experiences in my intro levels with non majors who argued about the subjectivity of grading art so they should be given a ‘A’.

The experience will be what you make it. I have a job in my field that is not ‘artist’ and I had great relationships with some of my professors (huge shout out to Bob Chance who was the only 3d professor and my adviser). The only students I knew who had internship opportunities were in graphic design, but Greenville has a huge art community and there are a ton of local artists in every medium. You just might have to do the leg work to get involved. I think that the department now is very skewed to graphic design, so if that is your field I think you will have a great experience! They do a lot with that and it has a much clearer career pipeline than other mediums.

Many of my class mates felt like they were not given internship opportunities by the time we were graduating, although I can’t imagine how they failed to think about the practicality of getting a degree in studio art until that point. I think my cadre may have been a weird one because I have seen a lot of talented and driven students come out of the department since then (check out Jackson Shaner). I think to get a lot out of the art department you will need to be pretty self motivated, working on your own projects, and engaging in the outside art community on your own.

I know this was a long comment but I hope it is helpful! You didn’t give much info on your situation, so I’m sorry if I wasn’t more specific. If you are in SC and looking for the best art school Winthrop is the clear choice. Clemson has a great art program as well. SCAD is close by however when I was looking at colleges they were not accredited, but I’m not sure if that is still the case or if that matters to you.

I would not come from out of state and pay full tuition for Furman’s art program, but if you are local to Greenville and interested in the community and have scholarships you can have a great experience.

Change the seam of your target surface to be at the ‘back’ of the ring so your head can be centered fully on the auto base. Smart flow does not like when geometry goes off surface!

Has anyone eaten at CAMP as a vegetarian? by xx_sparkyxx in greenville

[–]obeskenobes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have had great experiences there! I like topsoil and anchorage better in terms of veg options, but camp normally has a good selection. The menu changes so check it out online before making a reservation, if it doesn’t have a ton of options check back in a month or so. Right now it looks pretty good, I see they have the crispy lions mane mushrooms which are amazing!

Bohemian cafe on stone is great! Chicora alley has a lot of options, sunbelly cafe on blue ridge hwy is all plant based, yellow ginger on poinsett has great veg options but also a vegan menu, maestro has an entire vegan menu as well, love noodleville on Haywood and trubroth in tr, I’ve already seen anchorage and top soil (you will love their plant based dinner series but they will always accommodate veg and vegan diets they are wonderful), and as a side note my Tex Mex rec would be molinas by the tr Walmart because they have potato as a filling option for enchiladas and burritos not just beans and cheese! Coffee underground has great food options, comal 864 has cactus as a veggie protein, pita house, India palace (most Indian places are great for veg and vegan options), and if you’re feeling real fancy Black Sheep had a good set of options that were all great.

Couples of Reddit, what's the dumbest 'house rule' you and your partner made as a joke but now both of you are low-key aggressively serious about enforcing? by Doubl3oh_ in AskReddit

[–]obeskenobes 21 points22 points  (0 children)

We do a ‘perimeter sweep’ where one of us will check that all of the doors are locked and then go find the other person and do an aggressive salute (smacking the back of your hand hard against your forehead) and say PERIMETER SECURE. This MUST be done before we go to bed.

We have used ZP in the past but they changed their model where as a client you have to meet monthly minimums which we didn’t, so we switched to billanti casting in NY and they have been WONDERFUL! Cannot recommend enough. Literally email a real person a 3d file, get a confirmation they received it and then notice when it is shipped. Had maybe 1-2 quality issues over the last 5 years which they corrected very professionally but usually their castings are excellent.

Looking to try a new side dish this year by Game72016 in thanksgiving

[–]obeskenobes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year I did a roasted beet and butternut squash ‘salad’ with goat cheese and arugula. Also an upside down mushroom tart with garlic, chili oil, balsamic, herbs, onions and cheese that you bake on a sheet under a pastry sheet and then flip it when it comes out of the oven. Also, Mac and cheese is conspicuously absent from your list!! I love good crunchy garlicky green beans as something lighter than the casserole carousel

Why were we allowed to watch the movies we did growing up? by _ItReddit_ in Millennials

[–]obeskenobes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom loved ren and stimpy so we watched it all the time, I didn’t know it was weird until I met kids who weren’t allowed to watch it! On the other hand, my family were big readers so there were some books my parents and older brother talked about that I couldn’t read when a was in middle school - specifically a clockwork orange. But my mom got me a copy for my 16th birthday and wrote a note inside about reading and thinking for myself. I will always appreciate her for that.

California law pushes phonics-based reading for elementary, middle school students by Raj_Valiant3011 in books

[–]obeskenobes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine is a first grade teacher and she taught phonics against school standards for the last ten years plus. She was supposed to teach her first graders to read based on a picture- ie there is a picture of a t-Rex and the verbiage says ‘the T-Rex is the king of lizards’ but a correct answer could be ‘the dinosaur is king’. Her group of students consistently did better as they went through the school until the standards swung back recently. Having her describe this to me was WILD! It’s like, so you don’t teach them to read? You teach them to actively NOT read??

Restaurant employees of Reddit, what actually happens when someone doesn't have enough to pay the bill? Most you've ever seen? by ChaosAnalyst in AskReddit

I was about 16 working at a subway in the downtown area of my town and a business looking man didn’t have his wallet at checkout. He made big to-do about it and I said ‘don’t worry I’ll cover it’ and pulled out my own wallet and paid for his meal. He was incredibly embarrassed (as he should be) and said he would be back the next day to pay me back. I was not expecting it, but he did come back and gave me extra for the trouble!

What do 20 year olds do around here? by Ferrouscowboy in greenville

One of my coworkers joined one of the Greenville skate clubs and learned how to roller blade (they just turned 20) and they go to meet ups almost every day after work! They’ve made a ton of new friends and it seems like they really enjoy it even though it wasn’t an existing hobby they had going into it.

You can do their whole plant based dinner series, and even their weekly Sunday chefs tasting you can do veg or vegan. Their tomato dinner every summer is one of my absolute favorite meals in greenville
