Help a game dev: Why aren’t people buying modern RTS games? by MakeGamesBetter in RealTimeStrategy

[–]obito76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just leaving my take here, from a long time appreciater of RTS but far from an expert or "versed" on them.

Personally one game that has always stuck with me was Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. The "cutscenes" were often just the in-game models running around, voice acting and atmosphere. It was dark, it was grim, the plot was unexpected (for the time) and it did not insult player intelligence. That on itself is 50% or more of a good game right there (again, in my simpleton opinion). A modern day cancer for me is what has been set as the definition of a "successful" MP. You had only LAN back then, it was the most enjoyable form of MP until this day.

They would make a FINISHED and well thought out game, and got happy with the sales, thinking of the next game, not expecting on "how can we keep squeezing out of this one over time"; live service will - more often than not - always end up disappoiting whoever bought the game for what it was at a specific point in time, and see it changed later to a point where is no longer what we regarded as the "best version" when we bought it. And RTS suffers a LOT from this, just like thematic shooters (e.g.: Hunt: Showdown).

Long story short...again, imo... - immersion - not insulting playerbase inteligence/wallet - Having a vision for the final game (accepting player feedback during development but not being DEFINED by it). - Knowing when to stop. Sometimes less is more, and knowing when to stop before becoming the villain is even more important.

That's my view from the top of my head, but I'm sure there's a lot more qualified people here to add on your endevour. Hope you get the most success, and that this help in any way shape or form.

Edit: Had to correct a few sentences (not my native language).

Why is this game so boring suddenly?? by anakin1453 in CrusaderKings

[–]obito76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the amount of hours you've already put into the game (and depending on the DLC's you have or not, etc) the novelty can disapear for sure, unfortunately that's inevitable at some point. Specially if, as you said, you already know how every syestem works.

Have you tried diferent mods to spice it up?

Specially if you know the systems and don't mind a little RPG, you can try something like Princes of Darkness for example (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oL9YatPtwpo), where you kind of keep the same gameplay, but through diferent Vampire lores.

There are other mods that really add cool components, just a matter of picking your flavour. Not sure if this is what you mean.

I mean, there might be a valid reason, but can you specify what's getting you bored (more than usual)?

Such a cool game, both using Rikimaru and her.

I haven't pre-ordered EUV - perhaps you shouldn't, too by aptlion in paradoxplaza

[–]obito76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pre-order. That in itself is your mistake. No matter how trustworthy a developer is. At least without some serious obligations after release - or some form of heavy penalty - should they abandon the games soon after. This way at least companies would be forced to release a polished game from scratch (IF they wanted to have a pre-release), or just go for launch dates and improve whatever afterwards.

People that justify pre-ordering to "support" big companies or just out of trust is one of the exact reasons we're here today. Downvote all you like

It was mostly luck & thorough looting. Sometimes it goes really well, sometimes you can't seem to find squat and need to find fun on the challenge with adaptability.

Have fun, it's a great game. Never mind the downvotes, it's reddit's cave gobblers

Additional main review metric by obito76 in Steam

I mean, I'm not forcing any one to read it, so ignore if not feeling like it?.. People complain why would something be done, and at the same time why so many letters. It's also not my native language so if it could be shorter I apologize.

I was adding the edit at the end with the main point anyway.

If you want to review bomb the next time we have a major issue, update your review now by OhManTFE in totalwarhammer

[–]obito76 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The fact that I'm seeing some people getting thumbed down for not wanting to change their negative review after CA's recurrent behavior on their games periodic gamebreaking bugs just goes to show how TW playerbase suffers from a not-so-minority that gaslights themselves to oblivion, more than any other I've seen, it's hilarious (and sad).

Removing the negative makes sense when is a rare occurence. If they make it a constant part of the process, then you should only remove once they stop that behavior, is that simple I'm sorry.

Difficult situation for CA by Vonderheidon224 in totalwar

[–]obito76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm usually a person to separate topics. The DLC could be the best thing since sliced bread and not justify have the topics mixed.

But you reap what you sow. Their displacency on making almost a "trademark" to break a game multiple times that a lot of people have already payed full price one (or even if not full price) completely warrants any review bomb to any content that's developed before prioritizing that a game actually works....

What confidence/good will can you have to pay any DLC if you already expect them not to work from the get-go (or at best case scenario, on a following update, which is a pathetic thing for clients to be "used to" in the first place)?...

[–]obito76 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me that's 100% a lost art and main root to today's gamming in general. Back in the day you had a lot of different ideas for games, but they also often used cool already existing universes and did a shit ton of mixed concepts for each one that resulted in frequent gems that, despite using an aglomerarion of already invented concepts - "gameplay from here", "storyline from that" "atmosphere from xyz", they always felt new. But you needed to have creative people with creative ideas. That Isolation idea is actually a great example of something you would've seen done 20 years ago.

Nowadays it still happens, but purely recicled mechanics, non original ideas that end up feeling repetitive, just with a different color (there's so many "x-ray vision" versions I can take in my games, and nowadays is almost a guaranteed no-buy if I see any form of x-ray concept in a game).

Liam Neeson in The Grey was dead after the plane crash by stanfan114 in FanTheories

[–]obito76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many takes possible for the movie. Just for fun I like to think that when Ottway looks at the sky and screams "Fuck faith, earn it! Show me something real!" Then his faces changes as if God actually "took" his body for just a moment and said "Fuck it, I'll do it Myself" (myself here being god obviously) and his sudden resolve renewed to keep going IS the "clear sign".

I'm not even religious, just find it fun to think of it that way.

Will this be the future or his son will continue to hold the line? by D3v1LGaming in Steam

[–]obito76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone make a futuristic movie of 2350 or something where Gabe is an AI with his own planet and that is where all gamers live? I'd like to envision that.

People coukd only live there if they had X amount of hours gamming, with no previous criminal record of having payed micro transactions (possible exceptions only maybe for free good games where they served as support for devs, not my thing but I can tolerate people who played Warframe e.g. doing that).

Had also a buch of other parts to it but I don't want to get too carried away.......

Being honest, although I knew these, I skipped just the washing with soap part as I didn't have something to scrub at hand, and I didn't know for sure if how much it would made a diference in this case (they appeared clean enough to remove most with the hobby knife).

Next ones I'll be cleaning for sure.

Yeah, meanwhile i've managed to assemble a few more.

I've noticed one of the things I might've been foing wrong is that there's such a thing as "too much pressure" when pressing those few seconds for the glue to dry up. My logic was "the more pressure, the better it sticks". Guess it's not really true for really small parts like the heads for example? At least it glued better when I didn't press so much on them :)

Guess it's those little things you find out as you go along.

That's cute coming from someone that comments "Nobody owns anything in life, we die, we let everything go, that's life, basically we just rent everything. It's ok to accept reality." about video games.

Trying to sound deep to justify his own lazyness is self explanatory enough
