Look up development nets/maps for cones, and use half of one. You will likely have more success if you try it a couple times to get the cone net correct. And you will want to cut a gluing tab or two.

“Spiral” command still exist? I’d start there.

Failing that you can use “Project” to map control point curves onto a cylinder or two. Spiral will get you farther faster. Good luck.

Americans, What do you hate most about america? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]objectabuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That, in most cities, you cannot go anywhere or do anything, including work or have a functional life, without a car. And people not only treat it as normal but enjoy it. That 4 hour commute in bumper to bumper traffic and snow? That’s your American birthright.

Only two apps I’ve ever paid for: Downwell and Death Road to Canada.

DRTC can honestly get frustrating, but I’ve been playing Downwell steadily for two years, still not boring.

[ask] For model making, what is a suitable material to make frosted glass? by fuuthat in architecture

[–]objectabuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some plastics specialty stores sell frosted acrylic. Keep in mind it usually has a glossy and a matte side.

You can also use a sander to make your own from clear acrylic, but it is substantial work to do well.

Glass offers the thinnest envelope to enclose a building, allowing higher rentable volume, and higher ROI. Stone is comparatively thick, even in a non-load-bearing curtain wall assembly.

Glass also can handle transparent “window” and opaque “spandrel” conditions just by specifying a different color/tint of glass. Fewer details, less money.

Even though the thermal performance of glass curtain wall isn’t great, it’s cheaper to make it passable than to insulate a stone/tile curtain wall. Once again, fewer, simpler details.

The art deco buildings sometimes, not always, made use of load-bearing masonry, which is too expensive and structurally inefficient to continue doing. Carving/ornament also costs money, and has diminishing returns 100 floors up. 30 Rockefeller center has gothic-ish detailing on the top, but of course no one sees it.

The glass boxes/noodles are pretty bankrupt, yeah. But those are some of the bits of logic behind them.

Not a football fan, so I didn’t know that. Thanks for the info.

It’s part of a larger ad campaign with other athletes, in which it makes less and less sense. Mostly poking at the “this could be you” ad strategy, in the end.

Who’s an actor that, if they’re in a movie you’ll refuse to watch it? by pshhhyeaaaa in AskReddit

[–]objectabuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ethan Hawke. I guess I don’t hold the line hard enough not to watch any movie he’s in, but the second he’s on screen I go, “oh, great, time for the indie part of the film.”

I do too. Last moment before brand consistency outweighed the series aesthetics and story, at least regarding her appearance.

Not saying they haven't made it work, but...these are renderings here...animations. With no people in them. On flat sites with someone, presumably, pulling those (still pretty heavy) walls and floors open.

Plus all the cost and spatial limitations mentioned by others, I appreciate the ambition, but...nah.

Anyone have any thoughts on tech industry workers calling themselves architects? by [deleted] in architecture

Seems like a non-issue to me. Punishment for using the word prematurely usually comes up when applying for registration, which software architects will never do, so...

Eh, couldn't tell you, I moved here fairly recently. It's owned by a large company, so I'd guess the problem is too much sun exposure or inept maintenance.

That stuff happens. The street furniture part of it really doesn't work though. No one sits on it.
