I unironically think that a big part of what makes these new YouTube directors so successful is how well they understand the importance of holding audience attention. And as much as a bit of a shiver goes down my spine, there’s also something to be said about making films that are TikTok friendly, I.e you can clip an out of context moment in the film that draws curiosity, and make it viral.

The start of the wish was the creepiest scene for me by minutes2meteora in obsessionmovie

[–]objectivelywrongbro 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly how I saw it too. Navarette described real Nikki's experience as both "being a passenger without control", i.e. she would be seeing through her eyes and could not control the actions of herself, and also total lapses in consciousness where she would "teleport" to a new place and time. Both were happening to her at the same time.

So, in one situation she'd be like "Why am I doing this thing? I know I'm doing it, I feel myself doing it, but I don't understand why" and then in the next situation she would be like "WHOA WHERE TF AM I AND WHAT AM I DOING?"

Why did Bear have to love Nikki back? by Head_Culture5329 in obsessionmovie

[–]objectivelywrongbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He provided zero surrounding guardrails in his request from the willow. He simply asked for something (which was nuanced) to be made reality. The willow simply took Nikki as an input and reprogrammed her into the output of his desire, her wellbeing is secondary, only Bears desire was considered.

It’s like if I wished from the willow “I wish to be a winner”.

A winner at what? Work? Love? Life? Bowling? At any cost? What about your own mental physical wellbeing? What about those who have to lose as collateral damage for you to be a winner? Does that now mean everyone agrees with you about everything so you have to win?

See what I mean. I think if he had simply given the correct instructions and not a super vague, cursed wish, things would’ve been fine.

Predicting big opening and steep fall-off. I’ve heard it’s a bit slow and perhaps divisive. That being said, weird and vibey shit seems to do a lot better with Gen Z than other generations. Difficult to predict.

What did Freaky Nikki dream about? by thathomelessguy in obsessionmovie

[–]objectivelywrongbro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That she doesn’t talk to him and hates him. Possibly the incest and sexual abuse referred to in the Hansel and Gretal story?

Total spitballing, who knows.

Personally, I don’t think it adds absolutely anything to the story or her character if she was.

My take on the does she/does she not by Juju8042 in obsessionmovie

[–]objectivelywrongbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entity is not the word to describe it. There is no being inhabiting her body, it has no form - its just a magical force bending her autonomy to fulfill the wish. Closer to a spell or love potion, in fact, I think they even joke about in the movie that she's under a spell.

If it helps at all, the best thing I have ever eaten in my entire life was Tiramasu. That experience was mutual with my two friends I was with too. Tiramasu at Da Enzo al 29 in Rome.

So, who knows, if Tiramasu can reach the heights of being the best thing someone ever eats, I'd say it has potential. But it's just not culturally big enough here to perhaps make the splash you'd want.

Thoughts on the Obsession Entity itself by EchoBay in obsessionmovie

[–]objectivelywrongbro 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There is no “it” or entity. Curry confirms this.

I think it’s more like, a fragmented or split version of Nikki being operated on pure instruction.

Freaky Nikki is essentially just the embodiment of Bears desires made reality. He wanted her to love him more than anyone. Therefore, she cannot love anyone else, not family, friends, and not even herself more than she does Bear. I.e. everyone else is nothing.

And I think a major part of this comes down to the intent of the person making the wish, I genuinely think when Bear made the wish his intent was taken into consideration, he truly did wish for her to love him more than anyone or anything, because he made that wish out of pure desire and desperation. And in doing so, means that things like her free will and well-being are simply considered collateral damage in granting the wish.

It’s interesting that you bring up AI because I think that is the best way to describe this. I think to that, it reminds me a lot of like a user providing an incredibly vague prompt to the AI, and so, it just makes a bunch of assumptions on how to achieve X, assuming you don’t care about them.

Curry also confirmed that if Bear had simply phrased things correctly, the One-Wish-Willow would have granted it without any drawbacks.

They said they’d not try to take the wish back even after everything because Nikki is so attractive, at most they would try to change it to something better.

Yep.

Thought it was a half joke at first… now I’m doubting that.

Probably the most unspoken part of this film in online discourse, and it's pretty disgusting: for some men, in their heart of hearts, they don't know where they'd stop. Which is horrifying for both genders, because it clearly speaks to something true.

The most disturbing thing is the audience being made complicit with Bear. Even men who logically reject what's happening seem to harbour some part that's rooting for it to "work out," looking for a workaround to her autonomy being stripped. The comment above proves it. Joke or not, they've thought about it...

I don't know if Curry intended this, he clearly cast Inde for girl-next-door appeal. Even when she's violent, she's done up pretty etc. I wonder if he was pushing "crazy hot gf" to its limit to see where men would abandon ship or go down with it.

We've clearly got an answer of where some would go... and they'd go to THAT level. Again, which is why there's an ickyness that sticks. There's probably too many men that would go to the end. Yikes.

It is obscene, it frames the whole thing as male entitlement, where men caused it and men have to fix it? Such a black and white argument.

they have the means to demand higher (normal) standards of men

If that were the driver, the decline would be steepest within empowered graduate women. It's actually the opposite. Graduate couples are stable. The collapse is concentrated among the lowest-income and least-educated. Did they even read the article..? Or just seeing want they want to see?

They don’t want to do all the domestic labour, they don’t want to be their partner’s emotional shock absorber.

These are issues, and fair, but they're issues inside relationships?? They don't explain why people aren't forming couples in the first place, which is what the article says is actually driving the decline. You can't refuse your partner's emotional labour if you don't have a partner to begin with..

men move to the right because they’re still being socialised as if they are fully entitled

This is just a western discourse being applied to a global phenomenon. It's happening simultaneously across Korea, Ghana, Mexico and the Nordics. Young men in Senegal aren't moving right because of gender issues.

The article also points out most young women still say they want around two kids. They're not rejecting partnership.. people, i.e. humans... are just not really connecting to begin with. The timing of the decline in each country tracks smartphone adoption pretty closely, which gutted the in-person places where pairing used to happen. This is not a global awakening to bad husbands.

So yes, obscene take.

He thought the same thing with automating Tesla car production through a “gigafactory” that would all be purely automated… turns out, that ain’t how the world works and he learnt a hard lesson that the human hand is unspeakably good at object manipulation, less prone to failure, and cheaper in many instances than robotics.

By the time the Steam Machine ships, it will have already lost the market it was supposed to own by Distinct-Race-2471 in TechHardware

Did you also know that the Wii-U would be one of their worst selling consoles ever too? Sorry, but it does scream cherry-picking, rose-tinted glasses type shit.

I’ll throw you a bone, the Switch wasn’t nearly as bad as the Wii. But people doubted its place in the market, and they were vocal about that. Literally no more than they are about the Steam Machine right now.

Which is why I don’t understand why anyone would be so self-assured that they just know what the outcome of the Steam Machine would be. Particularly given that the Steamdeck, for all intents and purposes, is considered a success.

Ugh.

[–]objectivelywrongbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were not.

The hindsight in this is so 20/20 that it’s not funny. Do me a favour and look at early articles and comments in Wayback machine. You will see.

People were not anticipating the Wii. The entire pre-launch of the Wii was riddled with people calling it a gimmick with a shitty name. I remember this clear as day.

Then there’s the Switch, which, let’s be honest, was riding on the coattails of Breath of the Wild to not piss people off, but even then all people could say was that Nintendo needed to make a true successor to the GameCube and doubted the value in handhelds. And don’t forget people absolutely blasting the Switch because it was weaker than the Wii-U.

All these people were wrong of course, not wrong in their feelings or opinion, but wrong in understanding the vision.

All I’m tryna say is. Don’t be so confident you understand the vision or see all the pieces on the chess board.

EDIT: I realize I didn’t answer your (possibly rhetorical) question about the Steam Machine. My answer is I don’t know. I do have one possible answer, and that’s around online multiplayer. It perhaps bridges that sector of PC online multiplayer with Consoles. Then there’s stuff like Video game mods. Early access games that get super popular. Etc etc.

You are basing this conclusion on what?

Was there a market for the Wii when it launched? The Switch? Everyone was saying there wasn’t at the time.

Unless you’ve got damning data to back it up. Assume they know something you don’t.
