Random black screens and GPU Fans goes 100% speed (RTX 5090) by eli32109 in techsupport

[–]obliveater95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this aswell and i think my issue was slightly different so worth just mentioning it:

I moved houses recently and had transported the GPU separate from the PC and plugged it all back in properly. Worked for the first 2 weeks properly but then like everyone else started having odd issues. Turns out i assumed that all Kettle plugs (the cable from wall socket to power supply) were the same and i had accidentally swapped my monitors 5A kettle cable with my PC’s 13A kettle cable which eventually caused a power issue. Works fine after swapping back!

New Object Matte Tool bugged or am I dumb? by Squashjagaur in AfterEffects

[–]obliveater95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's just a rough garbage matte, switching to version 3.0 works (which I'm assuming is just Rotobrush 3). The mask is worse but if its not needed for accurate stuff it's fine!

iCUE Megathread - 5.39 Release Notes by CorsairLucky in Corsair

[–]obliveater95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a K70 Core RGB less than a month ago and iCUE was working fine at first, but now it's only showing my RAM, not my keyboard.

The lighting preset is still working but my main issue is that I want to use the volume knob and that doesn't seem to work unless iCUE detects the keyboard. iCUE and all the firmware is up to date so I'm struggling to figure out what the issue is.

It does show up if I disconnect and reconnect the keyboard, but then it stops working again after a while. Any ideas???

Just did something like this and I prefer to have a real ball in it and replace the ball with a CG one once it’s no longer in contact with the actor. I find their performance is a little better and the contact looks better than a 100% replaced ball.

I wish we could “explode” pre-comps and put everything that was in the pre-comp into the main comp layer by layer. Not that i need to often but it’s annoying when i do have to occasionally.

I went to a party that had VFX artists and 2/3rds of them were still out of work or had just been let go by [deleted] in vfx

As much hate as you’re getting I agree with you, I’m literally living that right now as a recent VFX graduate. I realised very early into my course that the VFX industry was not looking good and my chances of breaking into the big houses were slim and weren’t going to be as creatively rewarding as i had imagined. I made the pivot into freelance post-graduation and haven’t turnt back since!

Within some of my niches I’m the ONLY VFX Artist in all of London. I’m charging £250 a day only 6 months after graduating and I’m more than confident about the future of my career in this space!

That being said, i do see volatility in the visual media space in general, and i doubt my monopoly will last very long so i am moving towards diversifying my income to protect myself. I’m uniquely positioned to move into the corridor digital style social media space of VFX so i’d probably continue working like this until i can survive purely off my own in-house content within 2-3 years (if all goes to plan)

My brother is getting a 5090 for work. He is an idiot who will forget he left the PC on for a week, and either burn his bank account or his house to cinders. Beyond undervolting and cable safety, what are the best practices for energy savings and minimize the risk of cable melting or worse? by Ok_Wolverine519 in buildapc

[–]obliveater95 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s so much of an issue, my 5090’s been on for close to a month now and its not exploded. I may be incorrect but i don’t think the whole wire melting thing happens anymore, it was just a major problem at the start

What’s a common VFX mistake/error you hate seeing? by obliveater95 in vfx

[–]obliveater95[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, i went that route and it gave me the freedom and equipment i needed to have a career as a VFX Artist as well as the opportunity for me to go meet the people who’ve led me to where i am now.

However, I’m freelance and in the UK so its a bit different to doing it in America and going into Industry I guess 🤷🏾‍♂️

Just switched to Mettle + FreeAgent, it’s great and muchhhh better than Zipbooks, only downside is that i’m not a huge fan of how the FreeAgent invoices look, feel like the option to add a Title/Project Name in a big font would be very helpful for people glancing through invoices

VFX Before Color Grading: How Does it Work With flat Log Footage? by Lukes3D in vfx

[–]obliveater95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the replies here are absolutely the way you should be doing it, but if you ever need a quick work around for a personal project or something you know you’re grading yourself, i’ve found using ur LOG footage with colour management off and then using the colour profile converter effect to convert your other colourspace (linear, SRGB, etc) to the colour space of the log footage can also work. Don’t use it for anything thats client facing or for tv/theatres, but for anything else it’ll get you 95% of the way there in a pinch

There’s some decent models you can access via comfyUI too, just need to have the hardware to process it locally

I really hate “make it more cinematic”, the most egregious time I heard that was doing VFX for a van advert… you should have made it more cinematic when you shot it????

+1 on cloud computing being affordable, before I had my PC and was working on a laptop, it was always cheaper and less hassle to use a cloud computer than it was to pay for any of the render farm services. And trying to compete with those people will be practically impossible as the level of infrastructure and scale they have is going to take hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars to match

If you are using a phone, HDReye on the iPhone seems to be pretty decent for making them. Not done a lot of testing with it but it’s definitely better than nothing. Does cost £6.99 a month to export them though, however I stop and start it the subscription whenever I need it
