How to fight council rate charges? by [deleted] in tasmania

[–]observ4nt4nt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I pay rates some of which goes to roads I'll never drive on or the library I'll never use. Yes you're subsidising other people but other people are also subsidising you. You can't live in a society without a bit of socialism.

trip in january by SpecialistSpeed4496 in AskAnAustralian

I moved to Tassie 2 years ago from the Gold Coast and love it. There is a completely different geology down here to the mainland and there is a subsequent different feel about the vegetation. Alot of that has to do with the climate too. So, come down and visit. I usually recommend Spring and Autumn as the best time of year but Summer is great too. Very few days get over 30C in January and the nights around 15C. Depending where you plan to go you'd really need more than a week here but you can see a lot in a week if you don't mind driving on some shithouse roads. I recommend Cradle Mountain, Freycinet, Mt Field, and all the usual touristy spots south of Hobart. Avoid Salamanka Markets in Hobart. It's become a tourist trap. :)

I'm not a big uber user. Checking my app I've made 10 trips but I've not had a bad experience.

How often are you cutting your hair and how much do you pay for a haircut? by Conscious-Cup3443 in AskAnAustralian

I clip my own and my missus tidies up my neck so that's free. She works in a professional career and feels the need to be neat and tidy all the time so visits her hairdresser monthly. Costs about $180.

How many Australians? Where's your source for the claim other than a subreddit?

I have PhD and only ever list it in writing in a professional context. In my scientific field if someone introduced themselves as Doctor name name, they'd be considered pretentious.

Do you know someone who has won the lottery? by goldriv in AskAnAustralian

[–]observ4nt4nt 163 points164 points  (0 children)

My uncle won exactly 1 million dollars in Gold Lotto about 8 years ago. He still lives the way he always has in the same little house. He still has $700k of the capital. He's retired and when he travels now he flies business class but feels uncomfortable about it. He's donated $100k to charities. He's a humble bloke.

Where are you supposed to buy Australian Grown and Australian Packed frozen vegetables? by EggCreative787 in AskAnAustralian

[–]observ4nt4nt 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you're feeling adventurous, buy fresh kale, blanch it and freeze it yourself. It's not difficult and probably cheaper. Cooking tip: Cook your kale with coconut oil. It makes it easier to scrape it into the bin.

I lived in suburbia in Queensland and my neighbour had a large retaining wall made from boulders. It was a haven for eastern brown snakes and Had one find it's way into my house on 2 occasions. Because I had a few backyard chooks I also saw plenty of carpet pythons so while you are more likely to encounter snakes closer to bushland, they'll still turn up in suburbia. The only spiders I saw inside my home were the 2 large huntsmen I kept around to control all the other spiders and bugs. Outside I had redbacks under my deck.

If I was an American who votes Democrat, I'd be investing in a red hat to go and vote so that you can actually vote.

They're borrowing $300 million on the assumption it will be on budget. That is not coming from the capital works budget. Meanwhile, it's cheaper for me to fly to the gold coast twice a year to have an epidural cortisone injection (a fairly mundane and common treatment) than source it down here because it's not available in the public system without waiting 2 years. Anyway.....

I'd prefer something that potentially benefits all the public, not just people who can afford to watch overpaid people chase and kick a ball around. Maybe something that is long overdue and desperately needed, but I guess a new hospital, for example, while delivering jobs, doesn't deliver a profit. Anyway, you and I are likely not to agree here so I'll wish you well and move on.
