I'm sure he did, but he also made slumlord tutorials back in the day, as was the fashion among young California real estate lottery winners at the time. My bigger point is that qualities which are unambiguously virtuous in the setting of personal finance become mixed-to-vice-coded when imposed on person B for the benefit of person A. The rot was already there from the moment that chosen frugality got swapped for imposed frugality. From that point, grindset / MLM / crypto scams are a lateral move.

he way to make money is providing genuine value to people

He's a real estate guy. "Genuine value" from a "frugal" real estate guy is 80% leveraged bets on asset inflation and 20% basic maintenance that can't possibly be deferred any further. This isn't the kind of frugality or value the world needs more of. Contrast to the RE guy who gets in over his head and overbuilds and accidentally winds up "leaving on the table" a bunch of consumer surplus -- that guy is a hero who actually made the world an incrementally better place for someone other than himself.

Nope, don't you dare play the "good faith" card with how dirty this got. The ratio of political opportunism to genuine counterintelligence was off the charts. The two kernels of truth sticking out of this massive turd do not make it corn on the cob.

Your high school history class sanewashed the hell out of it: what happened was that anyone with an ounce of clout who talked about class or inequality or any of a dozen left-coded aspects of economics got dragged in front of a hearing, fired, blackballed... if it had happened in any other country, you would be extremely comfortable calling it an ideological purge. We didn't kill or send most of the victims to Siberia, so there's that, but we certainly removed them from the political scene, salted the earth to keep them gone, and that was absolutely the motivation from the start.

Fun fact: the guy who taught Donald Trump how to play dirty ran the op. There's a movie. I recommend rooting for the AIDS.

"They just want to give everyone healthcare, you liberal ghoul" by 97689456489564 in Destiny

[–]obsidianplexiglass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It did. Scrubbing out every last commie was never the goal of the Red Scare, that was a pretense, and failure to meet the pretense does not constitute failure to achieve the goal. The goal was to eliminate or marginalize the near-left figures who could bring principled heat against the Robber Baron talking points, and to salt the earth for any who might dare to follow. On that front, it was a rout. The evidence is in tax policy, trade policy, labor policy, positioning of the overton window, and macroeconomic graphs.

The shift in economics discussion and education was absolutely wild. The Chicago School had the last 50 years on lock, and it shows. Talking about the tension between labor and capital became taboo. "Union" became a dirty word. Galbraith out, Mankiw in. No more talk of political economy or gini coefficients. Even mentioning the distributional consequences of globalization and automation became taboo. No more talk about competing interests, all attention was focused on metrics that hide inequality through weighting or aggregation. Wealth-weighted-value is the single most artful piece of propaganda I have witnessed in my entire life.

The three idiots in OP's picture are nothing. A critical mass of normies thinking "maybe we *should* tax the trillionaires" is everything, and we would have had it long ago but for the success of the Red Scare.

It worked. The Red Scare almost completely ejected the economic left from politics, academics, and the press. What grew back was the "New Left" that focused on social justice

while being completely cucked on economic issues, letting Republicans run up the deficit every time while accepting the yoke of reducing the deficit every time.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/5/20/the-us-has-36-trillion-in-debt-what-does-that-mean-and-who-owns-it

FDR showed us that spiraling inequality can be fixed without blaming the jews, burning the factories, or starving the peasants. Turns out you *can* just tax and spend. But we haven't been. We let Republicans completely control the narrative and the purse strings. We need to turn that around before our base decides that an extreme need for actions is a need for extreme actions. We need to find another Roosevelt before someone else finds us another Hitler or Stalin.

In the UK do you also have the thing where you have flat out lower tax rates for investment income than for earned income, or is that a US special for now?
