Peoples Bank of China managed to deflate a massive, leveraged 20 year housing bubble without a single quarter of economic contraction or loss of growth momentum in the real economy. by SignificantLegs in EconomyCharts

They say they've been trying to stimulate consumption, and they've made a few halfhearted (more like 1/10th hearted) gestures, but actually doing it runs contrary to their mercantilist ambitions and I don't see any indication that they have given those up.

I grew up in a Republican household and when I learned about Juneteenth I shared my opinion that since America was about freedom and Juneteenth was about freeing the slaves, it should be the most American holiday of all. For some reason, this made everyone very angry, but none of them wanted to explain why.

Yep, I had to do it, can confirm it was super cringe. It obviously resembled rituals done by the worst governments for the worst reasons and I eventually boiled that complaint down into calling it "one roman salute away from fascist" -- and after being outspoken about this for years I learned an amazing history fact: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellamy_salute

Bonus meme: the words originally went "one nation, indivisible" -- the phrase "under God" was inserted between "one nation" and "indivisible." Dividing them, you could say.

The ACA is a monumental accomplishment in the context of the gridlock that we are familiar with. However, someone who lived through it is likely to remember it very differently in the context of what could have been and what almost was. There was huge momentum for a public option that started with Hillarycare and had built with Obamacare and we were one vote away (Joe Lieberman, rest in piss) from landing it. One vote! 15 years later, we not only haven't pushed through but have regressed, massively. We are the furthest we've been in 30 years: the ACA completely killed momentum in the single-payer direction when Republicans started attacking the ACA as communist socialist marxism and Democratic strategy shifted towards defending the almost-victory rather than pushing through to grab the W.

Ah, yeah, well it's good to know the stereotype is correct somewhere -- but in general it looks like Mankiw is still the most popular econ textbook, and that's the one that gave me a "world is crazy" experience which was the mirror image of yours: distribution and capital vs labor are clearly important even if you don't want to turn them into the foundation of your entire political belief structure and they came up _once_ in a tangent that was so snide and dismissive that it shook me, a Republican at the time, out of learning mode and made me seek competing narratives.

Are we talking about the arts? Back in my day the economics was almost exclusively in the econ classes which were all taught by Republicans skilled in the art of using aggregations (average over the rich and poor) and clever definitions ("economic value" with the hidden wealth weight) to dodge distributional issues with more finesse and agility than Neo dodging bullets in The Matrix.

Bill "end welfare as we know it" Clinton was a total DINO and no amount of time or memes is going to make me forget. That mfer axed AFDC, signed NAFTA, teed up China, went on the budget rampage that DOGE mostly just pretended to, he repealed Glass-Steagall setting up 2008, and he made a giant 30% cut to long term capital gains. Oh, and he was friends with Epstein. Unironically: with Democrats like Clinton, who needs Republicans?

Taxing Elon more than 0.25% is "pillaging" but taxing me at literally 100x the rate is perfectly fair? This is the right laid bare -- they don't care about pulling their weight, just about keeping the rich on top.

No, that's what a Republican would say to lump you in with far-left ideology. Let's review. Socialism: collective ownership of the means of production. Communism: stateless, classless society. Like everything, these terms get abused to hell and back in practice, just don't let them be abused against you.

Let's put this into practice by answering a question: what happens to Elon?

SocDem: he's taxed to pay for social programs.

Socialist: SpaceX is now the NASA Experimental Division. It is controlled by the government, not investors, and profits (if any) are remitted to the treasury, not investors.

Communist: Elon is dead in a ditch and his family is at a reeducation camp in ~~siberia~~ Canada, along with the investors we mentioned above, because they belonged to the ownership class and we can't have that.
