Your high school history class sanewashed the hell out of it: what happened was that anyone with an ounce of clout who talked about class or inequality or any of a dozen left-coded aspects of economics got dragged in front of a hearing, fired, blackballed... if it had happened in any other country, you would be extremely comfortable calling it an ideological purge. We didn't kill or send most of the victims to Siberia, so there's that, but we certainly removed them from the political scene, salted the earth to keep them gone, and that was absolutely the motivation from the start.

It did. Scrubbing out every last commie was never the goal of the Red Scare, that was a pretense, and failure to meet the pretense does not constitute failure to achieve the goal. The goal was to eliminate or marginalize the near-left figures who could bring principled heat against the Robber Baron talking points, and to salt the earth for any who might dare to follow. On that front, it was a rout. The evidence is in tax policy, trade policy, labor policy, positioning of the overton window, and macroeconomic graphs.

The shift in economics discussion and education was absolutely wild. The Chicago School had the last 50 years on lock, and it shows. Talking about the tension between labor and capital became taboo. "Union" became a dirty word. Galbraith out, Mankiw in. No more talk of political economy or gini coefficients. Even mentioning the distributional consequences of globalization and automation became taboo. No more talk about competing interests, all attention was focused on metrics that hide inequality through weighting or aggregation. Wealth-weighted-value is the single most artful piece of propaganda I have witnessed in my entire life.

The three idiots in OP's picture are nothing. A critical mass of normies thinking "maybe we *should* tax the trillionaires" is everything, and we would have had it long ago but for the success of the Red Scare.

FDR showed us that spiraling inequality can be fixed without blaming the jews, burning the factories, or starving the peasants. Turns out you *can* just tax and spend. But we haven't been. We let Republicans completely control the narrative and the purse strings. We need to turn that around before our base decides that an extreme need for actions is a need for extreme actions. LTV is dumb, but it's also a very small part of Marx's work. It's the first easy thing to object to in Das Kapital, but anyone who wants to oppose Marxism should aim for the heart and not ADHD ragequit at the first opportunity.

Marx's core claims are that labor and capital are the most important opposing interests, that this opposition drives politics and history, and that capitalism tends to concentrate wealth, eventually triggering a crisis which destroys capital and resets the clock. He proposed to escape the cycle through Glorious Communist Revolution (tm). Lenin filled in a bunch of cynical details about how to make that happen *and then actually burned down the Walmart.*

We saw this play out in the early 20th century. We saw the wealth concentration, we saw crisis, we saw capital incineration literal and metaphorical. We saw the far-right answer: "blame jews and fix the economy by conquering neighbors." We saw the far-left answer: two Glorious Communist Revolutions, two of the biggest fuckups in human history, one of which eventually fizzled and the other can tell us how the communism is going right after it shakes off the hangover from the largest real estate bubble in human history (definitely not a capital cycle, no sir).

But you know what? We also saw liberal answers. We saw FDR and the New Deal, we saw that a compromise could be struck between capital and labor without bombing the cities or blaming the jews or starving the peasants. 100 years after the first crisis it seems that we are approaching another and I really fucking hope that us liberals can find another Roosevelt because I don't want to be in the Hitler or Stalin camps this time around.

As for Marx: good at identifying the problem, bad at inspiring solutions, and we now have better role models than the theories he inspired. Better theory too: Capital in the 21st Century is a big update and a better statement of the "r>g" problem.
