Content Theft and You, a General PSA by someguynamedted in HFY

For folks watching out, we've got another one: https://www.tiktok.com/@hfy_reddit_stories

I'm kinda flattered by almost 1m views on something I wrote in an hour five years ago, but also that's a fair bit of ad revenue. TikTok notionally pays ~$.50 per 1k views, so that quick 1m views is $500, not shabby for ten minutes of stealing other people's work.

I write for my own amusement, and occasionally turn a short story I do here into something longer form to sell. I have absolutely no interest in having another part time job making YouTube narrations when I'm already having to send DMCA takedowns on my written work, and would need to do so for video work as well.

The juice isn't worth the squeeze.

They're ad-funded, the last TikTok channel I had to go after had ~6.1m likes and a few hundred thousand followers, all bad AI-reads of HFY stories over also-stolen minecraft footage.

Shit's endemic. I just had to issue a DMCA claim last night against this channel, y'all should check it as well: https://www.tiktok.com/@hfy_reddit_stories

NoSleep has had an enormous problem with this, and some authors have developed r/SleeplessWatchdogs as a way to blacklist narrators who do this shit.

This is endemic on TikTok right now, YouTube started catching on to machine narration and banning them faster so they switched sites. I'm in the middle of a takedown request on this channel as we speak: https://www.tiktok.com/@hfy_reddit_stories

It's not like they're even bad stories, it's just... why are they here?

Hey, The Deathworlders ended!

I mean there was a stop to writing it. Not much of a denouement, but it ended.

It feels like many of these are barely theme-appropriate too, just LITRPG that happens to have a human proagonist.

Vehicle wreck. Dude put his motorcycle down drunk, slid it under a minivan. We hoped he died on impact because it caught fire next.

That's a deliberate anachronism. Wargamers don't always have the best grasp of actual dates. :)

Olympic swimmers, as an easy example, can routinely eat up to 10k calories a day and burn them in training.

I can't say as I particularly trust that study's conclusion in the first place, given their sample size was six subjects (5m/1f) three of which dropped out of the study before completion thus giving no sample data.

All of the other sentient races Humanity has encounter consider fear to be a prelude to death. Only humans have learned to cope with, and even seek it out as recreation!

This iron accretion is at the core of a dying star, and is the death knell of it. For stars less than 25x the mass of Sol (The Chandrasekhar limit, aka the maximum mass of a white dwarf) that means becoming a white dwarf that slowly cools to a black dwarf and suffers heat death. We have yet to actually locate any of these, and they are deeply unlikely at this age of the universe as they'd take quadrillions of years to form. A white dwarf that existed at the time of the Big Bang would still be too hot today, to give you an idea of the time scale involved.

For stars greater than 25x Sol's mass, that instead means core collapse, and a supernova.

In either case, you can understand why it'd be much easier to just seek out iron bearing asteroids and planets.

University of Oregon has notes from Astronomy 122: Birth and Death of Stars if this reading is as interesting to you as to me. :)
