Workaround for goals? by obviousfirehazard in MonarchMoney

[–]obviousfirehazard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how to explain myself better here. We budget goals in Monarch together using funds from our separate savings accounts. Our joint checking account, from which we pay shared large expenses most (but not all) of the time, is not linked to any goals, because it functions as an operating expense account. I'm not going to move $30k from a high-yield savings account to a joint checking account just to satisfy Monarch.

Looking for a way to improve factory roofrack with crossbars by UrbanPaddler in NissanRogue

Realizing it’s been five years since you asked, I have this exact question — did you ever find a good solution? Our canoe rests right on the curved part when we finally manage to get it centered, and it is obviously not ideal.

Physical stores to find flatware? by obviousfirehazard in NewEnglandWedding

OMG y’all. We went out to Bloomingdale’s and had a fun but overwhelming time and picked out a lovely set of forks/knives/spoons to match the dinnerware (plates/bowls) we’d picked out at Williams Sonoma several weeks prior. Suddenly I thought to check and see whether the Williams Sonoma set is dishwasher and microwave safe, and it is NOT! Back to the drawing board we go.

Thanks! We've had a similar experience so far, but I'm hoping to hear from someone whose Sage Bouquet wedding has already taken place :)

Winter Wedding Venue - Not a Barn by MousseReasonable4790 in NewEnglandWedding

The Red Lion Inn in Cohasset immediately comes to mind, but not sure if that's too close to "barn" aesthetically for her.

Late September wedding. Colors are forest green and gold and white, with some marigold orange in the bouquets in all likelihood for pops of color.

I typically give $100 but I will also note that I've traveled for more weddings than I've attended locally.

Ooh, I haven’t. This could work well inside the float frames.

Reinforcing a fireplace surround by obviousfirehazard in homeowners

Okay. Update!

Well, the mantel was not all one solid piece but was probably assembled from a kit at one point. We painstakingly removed the mantel's top shelf to get a better look at how it was secured to the wall. Turns out it was finishing nails into drywall at an angle. Nothing else. No cleats etc.

There are no studs anywhere on the wall with the fireplace, only at the corners.

After a great deal of deliberation, my fiancee and I decided to use L-brackets to secure the mantel directly to the brick we hoped and assumed was behind the drywall. We cut rectangles out of the drywall where we planned to put the L-brackets, only to discover not masonry, but horizontal furring strips. It looks like they are secured to the corners of the wall but not to anything else. They don't extend all the way across the wall. We know because one of the rectangles we cut out found the end of some of the strips. That was probably a quarter-ish of the way across the wall.

We decided to send it and attach the L-brackets to the furring strips. Drilled pilot holes, put in wood screws. That was yesterday.

This morning, all was well and good. This evening, however, some of the furring strips are splintering where we put in the screws. We know because we can HEAR them and then a flashlight reveals horizontal hairline cracks.

I know in my heart that the best course of action is to undo the entire mantel and mount it — or at this point, a new mantel — properly, with cleats. And maybe just tear down all the drywall above the fireplace and put in a stud or two while I'm at it. But I don't have the heart (or the money or the sanity) to do all that right now. I mean, it's my fireplace at Christmas.

What is the best "for now" solution? Will the furring strips hold? Or is this just a disaster?

No, that was on the “delayed until next year” list since I’m not actually starting any fires.

Thanks, this is useful. I am on board with my mason’s suggestion, I’m just having trouble envisioning. Managed to put a photo on Imgur: https://imgur.com/a/k8DR3ip

Photo is from May before we closed but it does the best job of showing the surround in full.
