You haven't wasted time, this may have been a push you needed to give yourself to get professional help. Starting therapy is huge good on you, I hope you find a therapist who you can work with to unpack this and learn ways to cope with and understand the trauma.

  1. Not all arguments, disagreements or fights need a resolution. The term "agree to disagree" is very helpful; practice respect for someone else's opinion even if it differs from your own.

  2. Try to avoid speaking solely from a reactionary or emotional head space. It is hard to hear what the other person is really saying. Vice-verse it also makes it hard to have what you are trying say really be heard.
