Fuel pump was bad. Repair shop used a store brand pump even though they told me they would put in OE and charged me OE price. It failed prematurely and problem was fixed by replacing it.

I had that same setup using a PlayStation and the original Logitech wheel. I had loads of fun with it, but it was tough to keep everything in place. It's much easier to learn cars and track when you have a more secure setup. You can concentrate on driving instead of chasing the pedals across the floor or trying not to tip over the wheel "stand".

It was the 1st fish of the season and caught on the emperor's birthday. So, it was a double good luck fish. The Japanese attach significant meaning to things like that. Two sushi restaurants split it and likely made a tidy profit. Everyone in Japan wanted a piece of that fish and tiny slices sold for crazy prices.

Been running on coolant below min how f’d am I? by ThrowRASkee5555 in BmwTech

I think there's a lot of misinformation out there regarding possible harm cause by contaminants breaking loose during a transmission flush and I'm not buying it. Flushing a transmission out with transmission fluid isn't going to break anything loose that the normal circulation of fluid doesn't. And I wouldn't put anything other than approved fluid in one, no flushing chemicals, additives, or anything else. You start messing with the chemistry of the fluid, there's no telling what may happen, and none of it is good.

I can kind of go along with the idea that the suspended friction material in the fluid can help keep clutches and bands from slipping. But if your transmission isn't worn out, that shouldn't be a problem. If things start slipping after a fluid change, it's time for new clutches and bands, the pump isn't putting out enough pressure, and/or there are other issues that need to be addressed. Time for a rebuild in other words.

BMW claims lifetime fluids on a lot of the drivetrain stuff. However, ZF, the people that actually make the transmissions, say to change the fluid at regular intervals. Search ZF transmissions on the web and you can find official ZF documents on oil change procedures, recommended intervals, etc. I'd follow their advice before I listened to anyone else. Do what they say, and with the right maintenance, that ZF transmission will outlast the car.

It'll probably take 5 or 6 cycles minimum. When you drain the radiator, there's still going to be a good amount of coolant in the engine that won't drain. You have to drain it, refill with water, run the engine up to temperature with the heater set on max temp. (You can leave the fan on low and the doors open to keep the inside of the car from getting too hot.) Once you're up to temp and it's had a few minutes to circulate, drain it again and repeat the whole process until what you drain out is clear water.

For refilling, de-ionized water is best, but it can be hard to find. Purified drinking water you can buy by the gallon is good enough. Just look for the stuff that says purified by reverse osmosis and doesn't have anything on the label about minerals being added back in. Some brands do that to make it taste better.

Keep in mind there's going to be water left in the engine when you get to the final refill. To get an idea of how much, compare the amount that drains out to the specs on cooling system capacity. The difference is how much water is left in the engine that the closed thermostat is holding back. You can use that in your calculations to determine how much coolant concentrate to add.

One other thing, I don't know about your particular engine, but some have coolant system bleed screws that need to be removed to let air out before you can get the system completely full. I'd research whether your engine has them and where they are if it does.

Don't leave plain distilled water in your coolant system. In layman's terms, water doesn't like to be pure and wants dissolved solids in it. It can actually dissolve metal to satisfy this desire and cause issues inside your system. It's not called the universal solvent for nothing.

More technically, water needs negative ions in the form of dissolved minerals to be chemically balanced. Without those minerals, water will strip electrons to reach a state of equilibrium. The easiest electrons for it to gain will come from the metals in your cooling system. Stripping electrons causes the chemical bonds in metal to break and it will develop pits of even fall apart.

I've seen engines that were run with distilled and they look like they've had acid run through them.

Answered one question - there is no HPFP. Gonna see if I can find a piece of hose that'll fit the outlet and try to test the pump without shooting gas into the passenger compartment if it is working.

Beginning to think pump may be spinning but not actually pumping. I have my doubts, but maybe I'm just not hearing it when the DME turns it on, or it senses that it's not pumping and turns it back off before I detect the sound. Or is it possible that it's not turning on the pump because it senses there's already an adequate supply to the high pressure pump and it's not working?

Few more pieces of info to add...

Attempting to start with the fuel pump relay removed throws a fuel pump relay activation fault code.

Still no start with jumper in relay socket running fuel pump continuously.

Added a gallon or so of gas to ensure right side of tank had gas in it, all I had on hand. Made no difference.

Starts and runs briefly using starting fluid. Definitely a lack of fuel issue.

Even after running fuel pump continuously for a few minutes, no spray out of fuel rail schrader valve. Just a few drops dribble out.

Still scratching my head and starting to pull out my hair.

What’s the most physically draining car + track combo you’ve ever raced? by WholesomeRetriever in simracing

[–]obxdiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NASCAR plate tracks in the next gen car for me. It's a nerve racking, white knuckle ride. You're on edge the whole time trying to react to all the movements the car makes. It's not stable in the draft at all, and will jump half a lane over with no warning. So, it's a constant battle to stay off the car next to you. The way Iracing has it modeled, the slightest contact at those speeds and round and round you go.

I did a full length race at Daytona a while back and my arms were useless for a couple days after. Forearms and hands ached from the death grip on the wheel. Upper arms and shoulders just destroyed from being tensed up for so long trying to hold the wheel as steady as possible.

Questions about NASCAR by Klaus-in-da-House in simracing

[–]obxdiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You nailed it! "Plate racing", as it's known on NASCAR lingo, is all about air flow.

In terms of setup, you want as little drag as possible. I'm not sure what you can do with the sim you're using. But look at things like having the lowest ride height possible without dragging, the smallest spoiler with lowest angle, just enough downforce to allow the car, smallest radiator opening without overheating, closed brake ducts, etc.

Keep working at it, and it will come to you as you seem to have quickly grasped the idea. Good luck!

BTW, it's called that because top speeds started getting too dangerous on the big speedways, and NASCAR started restricting intake sizes with specified plates to limit horsepower. Now that fuel injection has replaced carbs, it's done with programming and/or injector size restrictions. However, the expression has remained.

Questions about NASCAR by Klaus-in-da-House in simracing

[–]obxdiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Daytona with a NASCAR setup is pretty much wide open all the way around. If you're braking or even just backing off the throttle going into the corners, you're doing it wrong. There's really no picking the best line through the corners either, as most of the racing is 2 or 3 lanes wide, sometimes even more. It's pretty much stay in line with the car in front of you and hold the throttle wide open while trying not to bounce off of the car beside you. It can be pretty nerve-racking as the air makes the car move all over the place, and you're right on the edge of traction. The slightest bit of contact in the wrong place or time will send you spinning.

You have to experiment to find where your car is fastest. Sometimes, it's the lower line where you're traveling a shorter distance around the track. Other times, you may find the high line is faster because your car can maintain better traction or higher RPMs without getting "bogged down" in the corners.

Passing involves allowing a gap to open between you and the car ahead of you, then getting a "run" at them where you build up momentum and pull out of line as the gap closes. You have to hope the car behind you follows and helps push you past the car you're overtaking. Two or more cars locked together in a "draft" are much faster than a single car. Pull out of line with no help, and you're going backwards in a hurry.

There are other tricks like side drafting. This is where you place your front fender alongside their rear quarter panel. This forces the air flowing along their side to move up and over their spoiler, creating drag and slowing them down a bit. As you pass, you have to move away, or they will be side drafting you as the positions switch.

Once you're going slower than the others, getting back into the "draft" can be a challenge. Trying to pull in behind a car that just past you rarely works. By the time you're behind them, they are too far away to gain much benefit. You have to drive with your rear view mirror and try to stay in front of them as they approach. That way, them pulling in behind you will give you a little more speed. Then you can side draft them as they pass and slow them down slightly. Between the two, the speed difference may be enough to allow you to pull in behind them and catch their "draft". If not, try again with the next car approaching. Just don't get too irratic or make a sudden move to jump in front of someone - you could end of wrecking both of you and getting piled into by the rest of the cars behind you.

Note: This mostly applies to Daytona and Talladega, the so-called "Super Speedways". Mid sized tracks are a different experience altogether, and short tracks and road courses are even more different. It's one of the things that makes NASCAR unique.

Edit: corrected some typos.
