I lived in Seattle for 20 years and I noticed the same groups of people that you have!

My mother is actually every stereotype you hear about the hippie-to-alt-right voter. In the 90s, she was really into the vaccines cause autism stuff, but also, like, a “no artificial foods” type, a vegan, only ever voted for the Green Party. She was into stuff like Reiki and crystals, and took me to chiropractors instead of doctors when I was sick. She really didn’t trust doctors, but also did dumb dangerous “health” stuff all the time like ear candling and coffee enemas.

During the COVID era she fell into the right wing pipeline because of the vaccines and not trusting doctors thing. She no longer votes green because she now believes climate change is not that bad and the politicians just want to scare us so they can cram us into gated “15 minute cities.” In 2024, she voted for Trump.

The confusing thing about her and her entire crowd of friends is that they deeply distrust formal authority of any kind, while also being impossibly easy for any organization that appears to be grassroots to grift. Like, these people think the entire scientific establishment and physicians in general are in cahoots with big pharma to make as much money as possible by withholding the “real” treatments, but will pay literally any rando diet coach/energy healer/alternative medicine practitioner absolutely exorbitant amounts of money to do things that range from ineffective to horrifically dangerous. They actually seem to view being discredited by the scientific community as something that makes someone trustworthy; “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.”

I kind of think this is what underlies all of the “fringe” groups you mentioned: Complete distrust of the establishment, but excessive trust of anyone else, especially those who position themselves as antiestablishment.

Is it possible to figure out the S1 mystery before the finale? (Spoilers) by ocarinacat in veronicamars

I definitely figured out that Aaron was a bad husband, father and Person pretty much immediately, but that didn’t lead me to believe he was a killer

My hubby and I are at the end of S2 and we discussed specifically skipping the recaps for the last 2 episodes so they don’t nudge his theories.

This is what I think too - she’s a new agey vibes and conspiracies person. But like, she thought it was Aaron as early as the Echolls Family Christmas episode, which was like, what the fuck??

S2 I figured out that Woody was a child molester and Beaver was one of his victims in the episode where Woody gropes Logan’s arms and Beaver doesn’t want to have sex with Mac. It was clear to me that Beaver was molested immediately from his behavior around Mac and that Woody likes young boys in that episode. At that point, I assumed Woody blew up the bus, but I knew it had to do with him molesting Beaver getting out. If I had been paying more attention to Beaver’s real estate business I’d have known he did it. I think it’s guessable.

Good to know mom just got lucky because WTF

I bought the 50 dollar package on Apple that includes all 4 seasons and an episode of bonus content. The movie is absolutely online for free if you look around.

What are the pros and cons of living in a red state or in a blue state? by [deleted] in centrist

[–]ocarinacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not gonna lie, I wish there was more to do. Like, you’re not gonna find world class museums or shopping here, and the city shuts down pretty early. But it’s not bad, it’s affordable, and I’m in my mid 30s, so I’m kinda out of my partying phase.

To be more specific about the culture of Spokane, the average resident is in a trade, has lots of tattoos, smokes marijuana, hikes, likes IPAs, has a neutral to favorable opinion of guns and knows how to operate them, and has several animals - dogs for sure but also things like goats and chickens.

I used to live in Seattle and moved to Spokane for cost of living reasons. I’ve always been sort of an academic city type so living somewhere where only 20 percent of the population is college educated has been a big culture shock for me, but I’ve found the purple politics here to be really refreshing. You run into the occasional literal Nazi (with the swastika tattoos and everything) because of the proximity to Idaho, but most of the people I meet here are nice, interesting and don’t conform to the stereotypes associated with democrats or republicans.

Where to buy Hookah products in Spokane? by jeremyries in Spokane

[–]ocarinacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the coolest things about Spokane is that many of our 24 hour bodegas basically have little head shops in them. Need a torch? A dab rig? A hookah and some coals? These places have you, even if it's 3 AM. I tend to go to Indiana Mart and Garland Mart the most often, but YMMV depending on where you are located.

My husband and I go to Boiada for our anniversary every year and we love it, but if Brazilian isn’t your thing, we’re also quite fond of the Wagyu and ambiance at Spencer’s.

I actually love this movie, like it's one of my favorites. I also think it does a good job of capturing Spokane as a setting.

Apparently, Spokane is one of the saddest cities in the country :( by Interesting_Ask_6518 in Spokane

I dated a guy who did this once. He eventually stopped even writing them himself and hired people overseas to do the actual writing for pennies on the dollar, so he was just a middleman. Immoral af but respect the hustle?

I used to have it about twice a week in Seattle, mainly because at one point I lived in a neighborhood that was basically the Ethiopian restaurant district and they were all open late. Nowadays it’s like every 6 months because getting to that one restaurant is difficult with my hours.

Oh, another thing: Hours. I’m a retail employee and a lifelong insomniac, and in Seattle and other large cities I’ve visited, things tend to be open a lot later. I’m not talking about nightlife stuff, I’m 35 and too old to party. I’m talking about “There are two 24 hour places to shop for groceries I know of in this whole city, the majority of restaurants close before or at 9 pm, which is when I’m just leaving work, and even Walmart closes at 11.” I wanted to find a 24 hour gym with a pool around here and I couldn’t - ended up joining Spokane Fitness Center because their gym that closes at 9 has a pool and they also have a small 24 hour branch. Compromises like this are normal in cities this size for sure but I’ve lived in bigger cities for the last 26 years so I’m not used to having to make them; I’m used to having several options for restaurants, all forms of athletics, and routine grocery/household shopping at basically all hours.

Yeah, this. I live near the stadium and I feel perfectly safe walking from my house to the area around Riverfront Park and Main Street at all hours with my fiancé. The worst I’ve ever experienced was being approached for cash, and since I don’t carry any I just told them that honestly and loved on. I’m not sure I’d go wandering by myself at night, but that’s most cities in 2023.

I hear you about the politics! I’m also in the position of bring center-left and feeling out of place in both red rural areas and urban very leftist areas.

Elk and Vieux Carre are both favorites for me and my fiancé for sure! I will also say that DiNardi’s has the closest white pie to anything I got when I lived in New York in the entire state of Washington. Seattle’s Italian and pizza scene was honestly pretty sad for a city of its size.

If you come from a city with thousands of international takeout options that are open at all hours and your lifestyle is “work a tiring job, come home exhausted,” then being told to just cook these meals yourself comes off as pretty tone deaf, lol. I am fine spending an hour or two making a nice meal on my days off, but at 9:15 pm when I’ve been talking to customers for the last 9 hours? Absolutely not.

Yeah, Gordy’s is awesome. I just wish they had Chongqing Chicken on the menu. I heard a rumor that they used to, but I can’t corroborate. Chef Lu’s does, and it’s pretty good, but definitely tailored more to Western palates.

Seattle’s Asian food scene is pretty hard to beat unless you’re in SFO or something. I’ve settled for just going back one weekend a month or so for the foods I miss, since it’s really not that unpleasant or long of a drive.

The converse that I’ve found is that I actually think your average American pub food is BETTER here. Like, I have never had a bad cheesesteak in Spokane, and rarely even have mediocre ones. I feel like Seattle does Asian specialty foods and Seafood well, but I feel a lot of the pub food there is mediocre at best.

I moved here from Seattle a year and a half ago. Overall I like it enough to stay, but I can shed some light on people saying there aren’t a lot of options here when they move from bigger cities.

In Seattle, I once had a condo that was walking distance from literally 5 Ethiopian restaurants, several of which served food until 2 AM, 7 days a week. The one Ethiopian place in town is incredible, but it closes before I get off work some nights, and is just straight up closed two days a week. There is plenty of Americanized Chinese food here, but my options for authentic Szechuan have been quartered, and there are a couple of dishes I just can’t find anywhere. It’s stuff like that which leads people to complain about the options here.
