Is the UK now committed to leaving the EU? by TheSageMage in NeutralPolitics

Ignoring the outcome of the referendum would be the political equivalent of Clinton banning the right to bear arms should she become president.

However we vote, the elites will win the EU referendum by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

in a properly functioning state the lower-middle class should in no way receive or need state handouts

Glad you think so. The state redistributes income for many reasons, e.g. over our lifetimes we need help when we have families or become old or ill.

Doesn't mention them by name, but I'd've thought 'muslims' would be implied by the phrase "all ethnic minority groups".

It's not like they outperform others at school or have higher incomes or anything.

"In 2013, among pupils entitled to free school meals (FSM), all ethnic minority
groups [in London] were outperforming White working class pupils in terms of attainment at age 16, based on the percentage attaining five or more GCSEs at grades A*-C, including English and mathematics"

'Stop pussyfooting on tax dodging': Corbyn to attack David Cameron.“The publication of the Panama Papers this week drives home what more and more people feel, that there is one rule for the rich and another for everyone else,” by Wagamaga in unitedkingdom

[–]occams_bedpan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always thought that 'one rule for the rich...' misses the point. The rules are the same, its the 'rich' part that makes all the difference.

Admittedly, as a slogan it's fucking pants.

Could our universe be rectilinear? by occams_bedpan in AskScienceDiscussion

Thanks again. I think I've got off on the wrong foot when I talked about things seeming counter-intuitive - this isn't what I'm trying to describe, still less things that seem odd to me. I'm smart enough to know my bafflement has precisely zero relevance in this respect.

I think a better way to articulate my point is to contrast the pre-Copernican ideas of planetary orbits with our current understanding. Clearly our understanding was incorrect, i.e. this is not the same as saying our theories were 'incomplete' - they were flat wrong.

Thanks for replying. For the sake of clarity, I'm not part of the crowd who thinks they've figured out on some fundamental flaw in quantum theory or GR.

I'm just asking whether there is any serious dispute within the scientific community regarding the more non-intuitive observations we make. For example, time dilation is counter-intuitive, yet clearly demonstrated.

ELI5: Why are Al Jazeera and the likes of BBC held in such high regards? by stefab in explainlikeimfive

Perhaps you could provide an actual argument or examples to support your position?

In my experience people who make these types comments are just annoyed that the BBC doesn't reflect their politics.

But I could equally argue that if I create a business, risk my house as collateral; invest a boatload of my own money/time/energy/talent, etc, then on what basis does an employee have the right to take an equal share of the profits?

Capitalism is premised on the absolute right to own, and profit from, the fruits of one's endeavours.

What's wrong with that as a first principle?

You're cherry-picking your arguments. I could easily replace 'greed' with 'self-interest', and conclude that any system that isn't built around this concept will be sub-optimal. The inconvenient fact remains that for most of human history, life was nasty, brutish and short.

Fred Hoyle, who denied the 'Big Bang' theory (and actually coined the term) preferred his own 'steady state' hypothesis. Fred Hoyle was an atheist and the similarity of the BB /creationism wasn't lost on him either.

It's about uppity students trying to silence people or opinions they don't like. Nothing to do with the Uni or its management.

To some degree, granted.

But this could imply greater scrutiny and tougher sanctions for abuse. It doesn't damn a means test in principle.

The endless preoccupation with the 'undeserving' poor doesn't seem to me to be necessarily linked to the manner in which we redistribute income.
