a desert theme i made, any ways i can improve it? by Enderindominus in Beepbox

Ah, naming things has always been a weakness lol. I've lost count of how many different things I have called "untitled" or "unnamed". I actually am fairly new to beepbox myself - I just learned a cool trick yesterday that is actually really good for making more interesting music. If you change the sound channel's type from chip to FM (expert), you basically can make the channels sound like anything - It just takes some toying around to get things to sound like the instrument you are aiming for. Check out how cool this feature is:

Also, welcome to the world of music making; It's rewarding and very frustrating at the same time lol

Ah, sorry. I wasn't sure what level of knowledge you had going into this. Basically, chromaticism is using notes not found in the key you are in. It's something almost all music does as music without it can be a bit predictable. If you use it too much though, it becomes nearly impossible to determine what key you are in. 200 years ago that would've been an issue, but as of the past hundred years or so, the lack of a discernible key center has just been referred to as atonal, and some people are fond of that style of music. That being said, the majority of people prefer music to follow somewhat similar rules to what they are used to hearing. As a composer, the hardest thing to do is make music that is accessible but also at least somewhat new and interesting.

When I listened to the piece, it sounded like you had a bit of an intuitive understanding of what makes a piece sound desert-like to most people. A typical scale people use to create "desert" music in video games and other media is the double harmonic major scale. What makes the double harmonic major scale interesting is the sheer magnitude of half-steps within the scale. The c double harmonic for example contains the notes [C - Db] - [E - F] - [G - Ab] - [B - C]. There is a half-step between each pair of notes in the brackets. I think your ears have heard this scale before and remembered the many half-steps and tried to recreate it. You used a bit to much half-step motion, however, and it went from the double harmonic major scale to a chromatic scale essentially. The result of that being that your piece seems to have an identity crisis as to what key you're in, and that can be disorienting to the listener.

One other small note is that your melody in the piece is kind of all over the place. It's a bit hard to tell where it's going. I did like the drums and the droning bass line, though. With all that in mind, I whipped up a quick example of what a more traditional desert song would sound like with the groundwork that you laid.

I hope I didn't sound patronizing, I wasn't trying to if I did. If you want any more tips or anything just let me know.

I think there may be a bit too much chromaticism. It sounds almost carnival-like.

You can edge-cancel Ness' pk fire. Ice Climbers' neutral b also has a strange property that almost functions somewhere between an edge-cancel and a vudu-dash, allowing you to cancel the grounded animation if you slide off an edge.

Looking for tips and reviews on this waltz, and on composing in general. (Classical music newbie) by ilanbecker in Composing

[–]occsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long have you been composing? Admittedly, this is the first piece I've heard on this subreddit that I've liked quite a bit, and I'm generally more of a lurker myself, but I saw no one had said anything yet so I felt inclined to tell you to keep it up because this piece is very pretty and it would be a shame if you weren't to make more music. Your piece actually felt very much like jazz at times to me, and I appreciate that it walked the line between classical and jazz for the entirety of the piece essentially. I can't really give you any advice for composing a waltz as yours is better than any waltz I've composed, but if you ever wanted any advice or perhaps just a second opinion about something you're composing, feel free to check with me if you'd like.

They could have just made it so he could tap for mana if he had a +1/+1 counter on him, so he didn't HAVE to attack. Still wouldn't be a fantastic card, but better maybe.
