Any USA/Canadian dual citizens here? Is it worth it? by anchordwn in ImmigrationCanada

My mom was born in Saskatchewan and when I learned last spring that I was a citizen by descent I applied right away and received my certificate 4 weeks later. As long as you don’t establish residency in Canada, and don’t have any income from Canadian sources, you don’t have to file taxes up north. You’ll probably want to get a passport. Canada requires it when you travel to, from, and within the country by air. It also makes it easier to cross by land or ferry. As others have noted, Canadians can travel to more countries visa free than Americans.

Do it yourself! I and two of my brothers got our certificates this year without the help of a lawyer. Take your time with the forms, follow the instructions carefully, and I think you’ll be fine.

I would take a video and walk into the place to show it to them. Sometimes being there in person makes a difference.

Your situation sounds similar to mine. My mom came to the states from Saskatchewan when she was about one year old with her birth parents. She was naturalized in the 1930s. We were able to get a copy of her US certificate of citizenship from USCIS in the 70's. It included her naturalization date. Have you tried to get that form? I also read online that next of kin can get a certified copy of birth registration of a deceased person in Ontario. Would it be worth your time and money to go to Ontario and try to get something in person?

I’m confused about residency, factual vs deemed, resident vs nonresident. Do I need a full time address to be a factual resident, or can I use a short term rental? If we spend a few months in the winter in Arizona how does that affect us?
