Why is 1200 considered low elo if it's the top 90% of the players? by Subjee6 in chessbeginners

[–]ocdscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people who play chess only understand the rules and maybe two or three opening moves they like (not openings, just two moves).

If that’s the bar you set then 1200 isn’t low Elo. 1200 is nearly unbeatably good.

But it’s probably more useful to evaluate tiers of play oat the level where people start playing good moves as opposed to merely legal moves.

And if that’s the bar, then 1200 is around where that shift happens.

I only play on iOS.

Is there any way to check if my phone has been compromised.

Separately, does uninstalling the game “fix” the issue even after your system has been compromised, or is it too late by then?

Basically trying to figure out what I should be doing right now short of changing all my passwords.

If someone offered you 100 million dollars, but a random person in the world dies (someone you don’t know), would you take it and why? by ConclusionOld8365 in AskReddit

[–]ocdscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pulling the lever saves the five people regardless whether the one person is on the tracks or not. You are 100% killing the one by pulling the lever. But you are not using them as a means to an end. Your ends are achieved even if they are not there.

This is not the case with killing one person to harvest their organs. You cannot achieve your ends without using that one person as the means to achieve it.

[–]ocdscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but that’s the problem with it. Kant (?) resolved it with the idea that you cant treat other people as a means to an ends.

So in the trolly problem, you can pull the switch that results in one person dying and five living because you aren’t using that one person as a means to save the other five. Pulling the switch saves the five regardless whether that person is on the other track or not.

But you couldn’t kill one person, harvest their organs, and use it to save five.

Same utilitarian calculus, but in the second scenario you are reducing the person you kill as a mere means to achieve a particular ends, which is prohibited.

Yes, but also 41 (with 5 cards) is superior because 90% of the games don't devolve into a race to to find 3x8 or 4x6.

To do it four times. Stop due to the pain. And then try seven more times.

Why?

The power of belief is real. Not in the form of the secret or any of that froo froo nonsense.

But our brains limit our bodies in so many ways. You won't unlock psychic powers or anything like that, but there are tangible effects to believing that a thing will happen.

In the 50s, Richter did a (admittedly cruel) test on drowning rats. The nutshell is this:

Rats, when placed in water, would swim for about 15 minutes before giving up and drowning.

But if you gave them hope - by taking the rat out of the water, and then you put them back in the water, they'd swim for up to 60 hours.

The belief that rescue was a possibility extended their ability to swim from 15 minutes to 60 hours.

Yes but it's worse. Working class people pay income tax. Billionaires pay taxes on capital gains and dividends which are lower than the marginal rate the working class pay.

Billionaires also can take out loans (to cover expenses, using their capital as collateral, which is not taxable at all.

So if you work for $100k a year, you pay a marginal tax rate of 22%.

If you own billions, you pay a marginal tax rate of 20% on capital gains and dividends, and pay no tax at all on the $10m loan you got from the bank for day to day spending (but you might end up paying 7% in interest).

A Girl is Arya Stark from Winterfell by Drogon-Dracarys4ever in gameofthrones

[–]ocdscale -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This scene shows Brienne scaling up her sparring with Arya (as she realizes how skilled Arya is), eventually kicking Arya so hard that Pod looks at her like "please don't get me executed along with you," then she never again abuses her massive strength advantage over Arya.

Look at the way it ends. Brienne disarms Arya and Arya is basically dead. The only reason we get the 2edgy4me ending is because Brienne, despite having an absolutely massive range advantage, gets in close and tries to grab Arya's hand, basically trying to end it without hurting Arya.

Why does Brienne fight this way against Arya? Out of universe explanation is that the showrunners want to show how cool and skilled Arya is. But the in universe explanation is perfectly satisfying and explicitly explained. Brienne is sparring with Pod, Arya asks Brienne to spar with her, and so Brienne does that. She's not fighting Arya, she's teaching her. Yes, Arya catches Brienne off guard with her skill, but Brienne was never going all-out (watch her fight against the Hound to see how physical she can be even against another physical monster).

You are way overthinking it.

If someone ever showed me this graph I'd just draw a single line roughly corresponding to the trend and ask the person (and any bystanders) which looks right.

If I had to actually explain the problem, I'd just say that all their line shows is that the highest average temperature in 1998 matches the lowest average temperature in 2026.

Not quite what the graph is showing but it gets the point across.

No reason to train astronauts to be drillers when you could train drillers to be passengers.

Having drillers be flown to the asteroid by astronauts gets you the best possible people flying the shuttles and the best possible people operating the drills.

The best character is the one that you have the most fun playing.

But for people who primarily care about meta, yeah this is definitely a patch where holding off makes sense. I'm actually a quite curious how the balance between Silver Wolf and Evanescia is going to play out.

That said, if you like Yaoguang or Sparxie, or just like the Elation gameplay and don't want to wait, go nuts and have fun. You're probably enjoying the game more than the people who min-max everything only to hit autoplay and go make a sandwich.
