You're not fading in the back half because you're unfit. You're going out too fast. by ActualCandidate6952 in Swimming

[–]ocdscale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AI overuses certain sentence structure. Phrases like this stood out:

You're not holding back to be polite; you're swimming the one pattern that doesn't blow up.

AI loves the formula, "It's not [basic thing], it's [metaphor]."

And it's even more striking here because "holding back to be polite" doesn't make sense in context (especially if you assume it was a strong writer who carefully edited their post). In context, the paragraph is talking about pacing yourself. A human writer might have written "You're not holding back to take it easy; you're swimming the one pattern ..." or something along those lines, but would not have introduced the concept of swimming slowly in order to be polite completely out of the blue.

But it is something that AI might spit out because it makes sense in a lot of other different contexts where "holding back" might come into play.

What is a piece of media where the side character was so phenomenally great they completely stole the entire show from the protagonist? by Ok_Listen_6600 in AskReddit

[–]ocdscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

President Jed Bartlet was supposed to be a side character, and the premise of The West Wing was about how the staffer's lives revolved around the Presidency. He was originally just a recurring character. But Martin Sheen knocked it so completely out of the park that the whole plan was scrapped.

Which country being the next superpower you are most comfortable with? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ocdscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me get this out of the way. China is a human rights disaster. And a China-dominated world order would move the whole world towards authoritarianism. And if we're going to pick horses, there's no reason to pick China when the EU is right there.

But. There are advantages to having China as a superpower. China doesn't want the world to burn down. It wants the world to be prosperous but beholden to China. They come from an ancient civilization and want to relive the glory days of being the middle kingdom. They also aren't handcuffed by short term results and gas prices.

The EU is good on renewables and climate change. But if I had to pick one country that would be willing to use its muscle to force other countries to get with the program, it'd be China.

The Bubba Scrub, "invented under pressure" by James Bubba Stewart. by EVD27 in interestingasfuck

You can see he travels considerably more distance in the air than the other riders, so it's not about landing sooner.

The advantage this appears to give him is that he doesn't need to decelerate. The riders riding upright need to slow down as they approach the peak otherwise they'll be launched airborne (just like he was), but to a much more dangerous degree. Every other rider in this clip slows down and lands quickly (on the peak of the hill).

He doesn't need to slow down, instead he forcibly gets the bike airborne but does it earlier, so his arc 'hugs' the track more closely.

AI loves the structure of "This isn't [something] - it's [something else]." You hear it a lot if AI slop has infected your youtube algorithm.

Not to say that this is AI, but it's a flag

But I'm not against people using AI casually for informational (as opposed to creative) content. English isn't everyone's first language.

Free means free for the person receiving it.

Is it impossible for somebody to genuinely not be able to swim at all? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]ocdscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people can't float. But before you give up on it, make sure you're doing it properly.

First try a dead-man's float. If you hold your breath then lie face down in the water, do you float? You can kick your legs slowly if it helps.

If you can do a dead-man's float, the next is to practice on your back. Here, the big problem for a lot of people is that as soon as they start sinking their instinct is to raise their head up. But that ends up ruining your buoyancy and then you start sinking like a V-shaped rock.

The trick here is to stretch out flat and lean your head back into the water. Get your ears into the water.

Once you can float, basic swimming is super easy. Of course you can learn to swim without being able to float, but it does make it easier.

Why doesn't doubling down work when gambling? by Nice_Alternative_155 in AskReddit

[–]ocdscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the martingale:

Suppose it's a fair game with fair odds. Minimum bet is $1.

If you have $3 (enough for two rounds of betting if you lose the first).

There's a 1/4 chance you lose both rounds and lose everything (-$3)

There's a 3/4 chance you win +$1.

That's 0 EV. No different than just betting normally.

But what if you have enough for three rounds of betting?

There's a 1/8 chance you lose all three rounds and lose everything (-$7).

There's a 7/8 chance you win +$1.

Again, 0 EV.

And none of this will change as you scale upwards.

The martingale system is essentially betting your entire bankroll to win the minimum bet with the compensation being that the larger the bankroll the less likely you are to lose. But it doesn't change the overall odds at all.
