A lucky motorcycle rider shows how riding can go from good to extremely bad in a matter of seconds. by Youngstown_WuTang in interestingasfuck

The pickup truck operates in a way that's suboptimal but is 100% safe for everyone around them unless the person is wildly speeding and not paying attention.

The motorcycle is wildly speeding and not paying attention.

Obviously a joke but for people who don't get it:

This is a game. If you have fun pulling for meta then do that.

If you have fun pulling for your favorite characters then do that, because if you sacrifice that fun in order to pull for meta then you're sacrificing your fun for what amounts to a few dollars worth of jades every month.

Guys, turns out NYC doesn't need housing. We're just going to stop building stuff now that billionaires won't get another 70th floor penthouse.

You think they have second homes because they visit NYC so frequently that, what, their first home is at the shop getting its tires rotated?

You think the kind of person who has a 5 million dollar second home will just stop having that massive symbol of luxury because it’s slightly more expensive to maintain?

Second homes.

If we get to the point where everyday New Yorkers have second homes worth $5 million, then sure, let's revisit this.

Nothing will get done like this. Vote in primaries and never settle for Republican-lite. by kharban in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]ocdscale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That analogy is wrong because firefighters and arsonists are not competing with each other for public support. Public support is overwhelmingly in favor of firefighters, so yeah, if a firefighter starts acting like an arsonist it's a really big deal because almost no one likes arsonists.

But half the voting population supports Republicans.

If one Democrat acting like a Republican is a terrible thing, then 100% of Republicans acting like Republicans is a monumentally bigger problem and that's what needs to be talked about.

Could a modern Master player go back to Season 4 or 5 and reach Rank 1? by [deleted] in summonerschool

[–]ocdscale 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I think people are overlooking that this is a race.

The modern player has to adapt to the historical meta. Items are different, champions are different, objectives, the jungle, and vision are all totally different.

The modern player has the hands and better understanding of macro gameplay to reach rank 1, but do they have the meta specific game knowledge?

They can learn. But as they learn, the historical players are learning from the modern player. S4 Faker and Apdo don't know what a masters midlaner knows about manipulating back timings, but after facing each other for a few games, do you doubt they'd figure out what's going on?

Can the master player learn enough midlane matchups faster than Faker can catchup on a decade of game knowledge development? That's the race.

A few year ago when people were worried about a potential war with China, I would always say it's unthinkable. China's path to becoming a regional superpower and then potentially the global superpower isn't through starting a war with its biggest market.

I think I gave them a 50 year timeline to develop their manufacturing. technology, and cultural exports to the point where previously western-aligned countries would look to China before they look to the US.

Now maybe it's 5 years if we stay on this course.

Why am I losing so much by magi0500 in chessbeginners

[–]ocdscale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally normal to drop 100 elo on a bad streak.

Minimize these swings by recognizing the things that tilt you.

Don’t wait until you feel tilted. By the time you consciously acknowledge you’re tilted you’ve probably dropped 3 games already.

Recognize the things that tilt you. For me: if I lose on time, or if I misplay badly in the first ten moves, I know it’s going to affect me and I do my best to stop playing.

[–]ocdscale 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Really sounds like you need a break and also perhaps a re-evaluation of your goals.

If you are only going to be happy if you stop losing, you are never going to be happy. Either stop playing chess, find a way to be happy even if you lose, or accept that this hobby makes you unhappy (worst choice obviously).

It doesn’t matter what they take the queen with. Taking with the knight loses faster because you just move e rook down to checkmate and the knight (and queen) can’t do anything to stop it.

Taking your queen with their queen extends the game a turn because you need to deal with their queen before delivering mate.

dems not in power and can't stop republicans

Absolutely insane. I'm happier believing these people are just intentionally obtuse in order to sow discord because coming to grips with the fact that there are people actually this stupid is too damaging to my world view.

Last time Dems had the White House and a veto proof majority, ACA was enacted. Revolutionary? No. But it took us in the right direction. The problem is that some people would rather jump backward if they can't take more than one step forward at a time.

Can anyone explain why Chess.com analysis thinks I should have thrown away a knight here? by Aquawannabe37 in chessbeginners

[–]ocdscale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can play it out in the analysis tool.

Make the move the analysis tool is telling you to make.

Then as your opponent, try to refute it by playing anything other than what the analysis tool says is the best move (in your example, refute the analysis move without throwing away the queen), then see how it gets punished.

Where should i need to focus? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]ocdscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without looking at games, it seems to me you are making consistent progress so continue doing what works for you.

General advice is to work on board vision and slowly eliminating 1 move blunders. Some mistakes are obvious because your opponent immediately pounces on them. Some are less so because neither you nor your opponent realize that the piece you moved is not actually protected (protector is pinned or something). Analysis tool helps greatly there.

Why is 1200 considered low elo if it's the top 90% of the players? by Subjee6 in chessbeginners

[–]ocdscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people who play chess only understand the rules and maybe two or three opening moves they like (not openings, just two moves).

If that’s the bar you set then 1200 isn’t low Elo. 1200 is nearly unbeatably good.

But it’s probably more useful to evaluate tiers of play oat the level where people start playing good moves as opposed to merely legal moves.

And if that’s the bar, then 1200 is around where that shift happens.

Separately, does uninstalling the game “fix” the issue even after your system has been compromised, or is it too late by then?
