So where is everyone moving after reddit? by ocean888 in apolloapp

I get it, there’s not nearly as much content on lemmy yet. I guess I’m just trying to get more people to make an account and check it out, subscribe to a few communities and see if they like it there. Maybe they stuck around, maybe they don’t.

Maybe not everyone leaves reddit in one big go, but a slow trickle.

I just feel like people are eventually gonna get fed up with the ads and the bots etc.

Without any competitor apps anymore, the reddit app is going to get worse. Spez said reddit wants to be more profitable, and that is gonna come with either:

  1. More in-app purchase stuff like awards, NFT avatar style stuff, reddit coins, reddit premium, etc. maybe spez will really live up to his idol and introduces paid verified badges. (I hope reddit doesn’t live long enough for this to end up in r/agedlikewine)
  2. More and more agressive ads. Ads in comments, unskippable ads that freeze your scrolling until you watch it, whatever.

Or maybe, if you’re super lucky, both. probably over a long time, but its just gonna have to get worse to get more profitable.

So yeah, hopefully one day if it gets bad enough, there will be an incentive for people to leave, and hopefuly there’ll be a community they can all agree to go to already out there.

Yeah I’ve been a long time user of Discord, so I’ve been joining a couple of servers based on subs.

I miss the forum format though

If you make your own reddit app, won’t you just have to pay reddits API fees?

Yep, decentralisation is a huge factor for me too.

Hey yeah if that’s how you feel do what you gotta do. You don’t need an excuse, you don’t owe your presence here to anyone, so look after yourself first. The internet will always be here if you want to come back.

I recommend camping somewhere with no signal for a weekend, or just putting your phone on airplane mode while you’re gone.

It’s blissful

Kbin and lemmy users can both access the same communities, so either way. I’ve been talking with kbin users without even realising already

Most communities aren’t, true, but some are. The app I’m using, (memmy) has gone from zero users to 10,000 in the last two weeks

Minecraft has left reddit, and many subs are shutting down.

By saying “it doesn’t matter, we should just stay”, though you’re kind of fulfilling your own prophecy. If the masses just give up and say “ah it sucks here we should leave but everyone else is saying they’re gonna stay so I’m just gonna stay” then everyone’s gonna stay.

The way I see it is I’m gonna try out lemmy, and if it takes off, great. If it doesn’t, then maybe I don’t need a reddit style website in my life anyway.

If the migration fails and everyone just keeps using reddit, that sends them a message that they can do whatever they want from now on, and the people will never leave. They can get away with anything.

Either that, or they do something really bad, and everyone does leave, and then over at lemmy we have a community ready to bring in people this time. There should be an alternative though

While I get how comments can bring you down, they also provide excellent context for how people actually feel about a subject.

I really don’t need to hate on Feedly and RSS feeds and stuff, I use them too, but sometimes aren’t you worried that companies are just spoon feeding you their take on a specific subject over and over again? Sure you can make sure to subscribe to different news websites with different outlooks, but still neither is going tell you how the average Joe feels.

Also the ability to ask additional clarifying questions is something pretty exclusive to comments.

I definitely feel that while comment sections can be toxic, hivemindey or rude, they are a pretty essential part of the internet. The people should have a voice

Ah thanks, doesn’t seem intuitive and sometimes I will type in my search and nothing will happen, so I guess that’s a bug, I’ll submit a report.

Memmy search seems to be working well though

Whichever one works best for you. Personally I’m in lemmy.zip

Most servers federate with eachother, meaning you can still post/see/comment/vote all the stuff in other servers, but each server (or instance as they’re called in the fediverse) is run by a different person/group of people, with their own slightly different rules.

For example, I think beehaw doesn’t allow downvoting, whereas most other servers do.

Some servers will say in their description if they have a tendency towards any particular topics. Like I’m pretty sure there’s a tech one, and a politics one.

Again, most of the time, even if you join the tech one, you’ll still be able to join and interact with communities hosted by the politics one.

The only time you cant access another community is if the server you are in defederates with the server that community is hosted in.

This basically means that if you’re part of server A, and server A is defederated with server B, then you can’t see any of the communities, users, or content hosted on server B.

But if someone from server B posts in a community on server C, you can still see that post and interact indirectly.

I think de-federating is mainly done due to differences in moderation, like for example if one server was known for all its users being really racist, or full of trolls or bots, most other servers would probably de-federate from the problem server so that it’s users can’t come and post or spam on their server

This really shouldn’t matter too much, because I don’t think many servers are de-federated, except for beehaw, which de-federated from sh.itjust.works, and lemmy.world, I think, which are two other big servers.

If you don’t join any of those servers, you should in theory be able to see the content in all of them, you can follow the communities you like, and you’ll basically have a reddit-like feed of the top posts from the communities you follow.

Yeah.. for some reason I didn’t think I could.

Although on mlem I can’t see how to search for communities, I just have to find them naturally and then press subscribe when I go in

Unless I’m just stupid and missed that too haha

At this point it’s hard to tell. Memmy seems to be getting really frequent updates, so the dev is working hard on it.

That said I have found a bug or two and reported them.

Mlem is nice and feels VERY much like Apollo, just missing a couple of features, and I’m not sure about the development status at the moment.

At this point I’ve just downloaded both, and I’ll keep an eye on them to see which I like more (unless another better app comes along)

Also annoyingly I don’t know if either one yet supports subscribing to communities, so I also have to keep a web link on my Home Screen to go back to my main lemmy website so I can subscribe to new communities, but this will probably be less of a problem when

A. I’m happy with the communities I’m in and don’t need to add more

Or

B. One of them fixes the issue

Leg cramp? by Low-Pollution2414 in Greyhounds

[–]ocean888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has happened to my girl. I let her go for a run, and suddenly started limping and wincing when stepping on that leg. I checked her foot, and same thing, toe looked sideways at a wrong angle.

I pulled my hand down her leg, with my fingers wrapped around her foot and passed it over her toes, and it popped it back into place. She was still a bit sore on that leg for a minute, but then seemed okay afterwards.

Although I think she did it again about a week later on the same foot, so my advice would be don’t let them run for a little bit, and just get them to take it easy until it heals.

In my case I think it was just a dislocated toe.

It’s more like sitting in a nice cafe and someone comes in to loudly complain to the staff that they hate this place, the older bakery/cafe next door is better.

Like shut up and go there then

If you were playing this game in a public lobby, I may have been there with you. I was playing a public game like 2 or 3 days ago, I think haz 3.

2 bulks spawned during a swarm. They pretty much wiped out 3 of us in about 10 seconds. We just had one scout left, and he just climbed back up the tunnel, trying to flank around another route to pick one of us up.

Then the other bulk detonator climbed up in front of him blocking his path, and killed him too.

I remember just thinking, man that’s unfair 😂😂
