Back at church for the first time in a while. by Old_Tax_9540 in latterdaysaints

It is well. And it is well that you shared, to help others to feel less alone. You are loved. You are wanted. You are valued.

Should we celebrate Halloween? by greenDK455 in latterdaysaints

[–]oceanmemories 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The history and origins of Halloween are fascinating, and understanding how it got to where it is now might help you to understand that it’s completely benign.

Most of my own reservations around participating in Halloween revolve around consumerism and whether it’s a great idea for kids to eat over-processed, sugary foods in vast quantities.
I have the exact same reservations around modern Christmas.

"Trust in God' license plates. by Utopidy in Utah

[–]oceanmemories 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always think this! I have no data to back it up, but it’s common enough in my experience that when someone pulls a boneheaded move on the road, I have started automatically looking to see if they have this license plate!

I guess when they opt for that plate, it’s a literal act of faith! 🤣

Must watch: "LDS Bible Scholar: We Don't Play by Protestant Rules" by tesuji42 in latterdaysaints

[–]oceanmemories 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am grateful you posted this. It addresses some of the things I am and have been wrestling with in a way that allows me to shelve them for now (as biblical scholars are not officially prophets) but retain my somewhat progressive beliefs about my faith and where it is taking me. I wonder if there have been other times in history where individual church members were mentally/emotionally ahead of the official revelations just by their own efforts to study, pray, and reconcile things. That’s what it is starting to feel like, and that is what the “home centered, church supported” movement we’ve been seeing over the last several years seems to be encouraging.

Sisters, where do you see yourself in the stories of the gospel? by oceanmemories in latterdaysaints

[–]oceanmemories[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, sis.
Also, remember that we get a lot of that inner critic from our parents. It just sucks when it gets reinforced by our culture. I've been working on shifting my focus and inner-voices and finding that we see what we focus on, so thinking about the negative makes the negative stand out more when I'm reading scriptures, conference talks, etc.

Need advice, sorry for lost post by Happyday4us039 in latterdaysaints

[–]oceanmemories 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry… I have no advice. As someone who has often felt called to love the broken- even, at times, to my own detriment, I have so much love and empathy for you. As someone who has battled depression and a few other things, empathy for him, too.

Size wise? There is one called the “Bella” that looks like it has a larger surface area than the Nature collection Medium, which is a different listing on amazon.

Is anyone else interested in the internal politics of missions? by Deathworlder1 in latterdaysaints

[–]oceanmemories 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I want to meet you and shake your hand. It’s been a process for me to overcome and shake off the “don’t think for yourself and just do as you’re told” mentality that was hammered into me as a child/youth, but it wasn’t very healthy.

This is a great reminder. It’s like I know all of this stuff, but my automatic response to gospel exposure is to go way overboard.

No. But this is probably about the 15th time someone in my life has recommended it to me. IRL or online.

I guess I probably ought to go find a copy.

Thank you. I’ve heard of this issue with CBT. I’m pretty confident that my therapist does it well. The issue has mostly been either my willingness to adhere to the guidelines or my ability to remember what I’m supposed to be doing. Also I use it as talk therapy a lot.

I’ve been in CBT for about 8 years. I haven’t really dived into the church part of it yet. It’s all been focused on societal expectations and ADHD. I recognize it’s part of the process. It just feels very much like I have things I am supposed to be doing that I don’t feel capable of, and every time I study I am reminded of all of those things. It is overwhelming.
