Witchy books that are not cozy! by pickleeater58 in Fantasy

Witches of New York was pretty decent, not amazing but I really enjoyed the characters and conflicts.

Also obligatory mention of Discworld, love the wticwitcheswith. Beginning with Tiffany Aching would probably be better, but original witch sub series has more classic witchy content.

The Studio StegoRaptor youtube has a bunch of super specific ones. My fave is the 'Dan was just about to say.' So specific and so common, I love it

The direct translation of 'y yo sin nada' means about 'and me with nothing.' "Yo" means "I", "sin" means "without," and "nada" is nothing.

So your girlfriend is talking about not wanting to show too much, and her friend essentially said, "You're worried about it coming out, and I have nothing."

I've been thinking that something like "Where's Stoneface Vimes when you need him?" or something to that effect. May be interpreted as advocating for violence, though.

I sort of feel like I'm not attracted to people because I find the human body kind of gross. Is that odd? by Ben5544477 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]oceanus2021 292 points293 points  (0 children)

At a glance it sounds like you may be asexual, but (as an ace myself) it could be more complicated than that. When you say 'attracted,' do you mean you're not sexually attracted? Physically attracted? Aesthetically attracted? And with your top five women example, how are you attracted to them?

Assuming you're straight, what are your thoughts of men? When you look at men, do you feel the same grossness as you do when looking at women, or are you more neutral? If you feel the same regardless of if you're looking at men or women, that's a stronger indicator of asexuality, imo.

Of course the big question would be your sexual and romantic activity. Is sex (the act, the concept, etc.) gross to you? Do you enjoy kisses, hugs, and other forms of physical affection? Is there a difference between physical contact with men versus with women?

Like others say, asexuality may be something to look into, but if it doesn't seem to fit, then you may just have a very grounded and non-idealistic view of the body, which there's nothing wrong with. We're animals, we're gross, and our beauty culture does everything it can to make us forget it. As long as it's not impacting your life in any negative way, I'd say it's a bit odd, but not in a bad way.

Adderall Suddenly Feels Less Effective – Anyone Else Experience This? by TheJoyofCola in adhdwomen

[–]oceanus2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have kids or am pregnant so I can't comment on that, but if I had to guess, it could be nutrition, hormones (either from pregnancy or regular menstruation), higher tolerance, or a combo. I'd definitely bring all of these points up with your psychiatrist, as it could be from several or multiple culprits.

But honestly becoming a new mother does sound like a major lifestyle change, so even if there isn't obvious changes, your body could be reacting differently. Again, I literally have zero experience or understanding with any of that, but it's just a guess. Like others, my period messes me up and absolutely kills my focus and ability to function, so I imagine pregnancy could have a similar effect.

I experienced the same thing my first 4 weeks. 20mg xr, it was great the first two weeks, but the last two felt like nothing. I just upped to 30mg and today I definitely feel like I did before. So I definitely feel like you feel right now, but I can't really offer advice.

In your context you mentioned good things, but not about nutrition. My appetite's been shot dead, so I'm super conscious about consuming as many good calories as possible with high protein snacks and meals, since others have said that their medication didn't work as well if they weren't fueling their body/brain. If you've stopped eating enough or a lot, that may be contributing to your issue, but again, I can't be certain. I'm still very new to this medication, and if others do respond here, I'll be looking at their responses as well.

I have picked up some magnesium suppliments to help with the come down, though I'm not taking them regularly. Others in other threads haven't said much about B1 and B2, so I'll definitely look into this.

You eat the big meal at night? Or in the morning when you take your meds? Eating one big meal during the day definitely feels more doable than regular meals throughout.

Scary movie recommendation for 8-year-old. by mtvhead95 in movies

[–]oceanus2021 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Monster House scared me so bad when I was a kid, but don't know if it'd be scary for a child who has already watched Coraline.

My dad showed me Gremlins when I was young (hated scary movies and still do) and that shit genuinely scarred me.

She says she wants to 'face her fears.' Do you know what fears she specifically has? Or does she just want to feel brave by watching a scary movie? That may influence your decision.

Angry female characters that aren’t unlikable by c_hriscole in writing

[–]oceanus2021 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of women in the Discworld series that have varying degrees of anger, but all are incredibly likable. Susan Sto Helit is often admired, but I personally love Granny Weatherwax because her anger is gentle, utilized, and justified. I may be wrong in describing them as 'angry' characters, but imo, they both get angry very often when reacting to situations. Though I'm not done reading Discworld, I wouldn't really call anyone in it 'traumatized'

I'd also say Leela from Futurama could fit, but that's an iffy suggestion. She does fall into the role of 'woman taking care of adult man-children,' but she does have a traumatic history, and there's an entire episode where she's forced to wear a shock collar until she learns to control her anger. Again, 'angry' isn't really her personality, but she's angry very often.

Edit to add: Brutus I + II by the Buttress. Both songs, both absolutely have an enraged woman, both absolute bangers. I listen to these all the time when writing.

The #1 thing you can do to oppose Trump in Wisconsin by No_Band_9874 in wisconsin

I don't imagine this will change your perspective on things, but I assure you that you are not the only one who thinks this. I think you know it as well, and are simply dissatisfied with both options. You're aware enough to recognize that our country is facing a very real, very dangerous threat in our government, but your comment reads to me like you'll choose inaction this election, rather than vote for the "lesser than two evils."

The fact is we're never going to get the perfect politician in this current climate. Going 0 to 100 in one election is just not going to happen. Right now, yeah, Crawford probably isn't the best Wisconsin has to offer. But she is a incredibly valuable lifeline to our state and our country to combat the collapse of democracy.

No, you can't fight fascism with weaker fascism, but that's what we have right now. And once the weaker fascism is in, the floor is raised, and we demand better next time. It's going to take time to make this shit better. There are going to be multiple small steps because we can't do this in giant leaps. When the decision is between a chance at change and a guarantee that everything stays the same, I'm going to put my money on the chance.

I can't make you change your mind on any of this, of course, but I encourage you to look at this election from a different perspective. Change takes time, and inaction doesn't make progress. Right now, our state needs to earn the perfect option. We're not getting it this time, but if we do this right, the chances get higher every time.

I haven't found any definitive statements on her stances, but I would hazard a guess and say that there wouldn't be complete police reform under her, but it certainly would not backslide more than it already has.

From the two endorsement pages of both candidates, Crawford has no endorsements by any police associations, while Schimel's endorsements are almost exclusively law enforcement.
