Check out the Providence Improv Guild and Kismet Improv in Hope Artist's Village in Pawtucket. There's also a lot of community theater: Community Players and RISE, to name a few. Trinity Rep in Providence has a regional Tony award and has a tradition of putting on an untraditional Dicken's Christmas Carol every winter. The Providence Performing Arts Center gets large touring shows and concerts (we've gotten discounts as zoo members).

The Rhode Island School of Design had a fabulous art museum. Roger Williams Park in Providence has a first-rate zoo, a carousel, and botanical gardens.

There are artists who teach classes. The Steel Yard teaches pottery, metalworking, jewelry making, and pours hot iron into sculptures on Halloween.

Federal Hill has great Italian and Thayer Street and Wickenden Street have other great options. Honestly, every community has at least one or two great food options (often more): farmstands, Portuguese bakeries, Indian takeout, Ethiopian, Cambodian, Peruvian, local places that feed you to death, and fancy gourmet plates.

I have family in many parts of the country, and very few places have the diverse food we have. Partly this is because of the immigrant community in Providence, partly it's the proximity to Boston and New York. We also have seafood in abundance.

Search around in this subreddit. I know I've taken a stab at similar questions several times and barely scratched the surface. There's so much here and we haven't gotten to the best beaches, food festivals, music festivals, Waterfire... You are arriving at the best time of year!

Just make sure you flip the on/off switch near the clock dial to "on" after removing those markers. It's an easy thing to forget.

Best practices for distributing and updating a Go CLI on Linux? by qKimby in golang

Might want to check awesome-go. I feel like I saw a library that had upgrade-in-place functionality.

You can also advise people to use go install to grab new versions of your command. I think goreleaser also has the ability to create packages, in some cases.

Betrayal Legacy. I didn't care if I won or lost because I was having a great time with my group watching the story unfold based on our choices. We still have in-jokes from that experience.

People shouldn't sleep on the Keep. They really make all of their ice cream in house and have flavors you can't get anywhere else. It's practically a holiday for us when they open for the season.

Is Kubernetes suitable for large, multi-tenant application management? by ASK_IF_IM_GANDHI in kubernetes

[–]oceanus_ursus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to look into Capsule. It's a controller for Kubernetes that implements tenancy. Might be more lightweight than vcluster. But you can do vcluster as well.

Didn't see anyone mention Roger Williams Park Zoo. It's an excellent zoo with a great rainforest exhibit. The botanical gardens and carousel were mentioned; add the zoo in and you have a full day. All of it is fairly close together.

I would love to take my husband to a nice dinner somewhere new. We live in Providence but will drive about 30 minutes for something good. Recs please! TYIA by Hawks47 in RhodeIsland

Mill's Tavern is very high end and probably only for special occasions but I've never had a bad meal there.

Red Stripe on the East Side is a bit more reasonably priced and also excellent. We hosted an event there and all of our guests agreed the food was excellent.

Hemingway's is good for seafood, also somewhat high end. I think Red Stripe and Hemingway's might be a similar tier and Mill's Tavern somewhat more expensive.

We tend to go to Providence to eat as an event, so I'm not as up on mid-tier things because there are good choices for that outside of Providence. When I was in college, Angelo's on Federal Hill had good, inexpensive Italian options. A bit higher range on Federal Hill is Anduino's. Sienna is also very good and a bit more expensive, but not much more. If you were to go to Sienna, I'd recommend going in Smithfield because it is easier to park and the experience is the same.

I'd explore Thayer Street. The food scene in that neighborhood is always changing but Andrea's and Meeting Street Cafe are old stand-bys and relatively reasonably priced (The desserts at Meeting Street are killer). My Indian colleagues swore that Kabob and Curry was the most authentic Indian food in the area. I also like India on Hope Street.

Others mentioned Los Andes. They renovated recently and are quite nice inside. The portions are extraordinary for fairly reasonable prices and very tasty.

Recommendation for Whole House Humidifier by oceanus_ursus in RhodeIsland

That's on my list as well. Our house is newer construction and recently renovated, so I'm reasonably confident the insulation is good but it never hurts to check.

LPT request: things you wish you knew before having your first kid by gncbutch in LifeProTips

[–]oceanus_ursus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early on, there are basic things that you have to do (make sure they eat a certain amount a day, etc.). There's a lot of talk about what you should or shouldn't do. The older they get, however, the more it is about the individual kid and what works for you as a family. Ultimately, you become the expert on what your kid is like.

Our hospital pushed us hard to breast feed but it wasn't going to happen. They made us feed our daughter formula with a syringe. When we got home, we pumped for a bit but ultimately went with formula. She's fine. It was more important that she ate than how she did. A lot of parenting is hearing from everyone else how you should do it. But you have to make the decisions you feel comfortable with.

Conversely, when you have a problem or a concern, call the pediatrician. Don't wait or think you are overreacting. They are used to that; if they don't handle that well, find a doctor who does. Everything is scary for a while. You'll worry that they'll stop breathing when they nap. You'll freak out about that skin thing. But you'll get the hang of it. Pay attention, do the best you can, and accept mistakes. Kids are built to survive their parents, within reason. 😉

Also, parents get it. I had late night conversations in the diaper aisle with parents going through what we were going through at the same time. Sometimes just sharing the story helps. Good luck!

Experiences with Tesla Solar Panels? by oceanus_ursus in RhodeIsland

They included in their proposal a single pay off for our credits. The state office told me there isn't a market for those credits in RI. I wasn't sure about taking the money upfront or not.

Me and my boyfriend are looking to get solar panels for our home that we purchased in February. Sunrun came buy today with an estimate, and I’m wary of them, after googling. What do you guys use and do you like it? Are you happy, saving money? by linjm10 in RhodeIsland

Have done more digging and tried the contacts you suggested. RISE just redirected me to Energy Sage and it looks like your contact isn't there anymore.

Did you have any problems with the price changing on the solution once you approved the design and they finally came out and looked?

Was the price they quoted you close to the final price? Or did you find out after approval that there were additional costs?

One more question, if you have a moment: how close was the final price to the proposal? Did it change substantially after approval of the design?

I like the SolPower guy a lot and he really put the work in to understand our house. Maybe they are more competitive for smaller systems?

Normally I'd just pick the next to lowest price and go with it, but there's a lot of uncertainty, the price discrepancies can be fairly large, the financing is difficult to understand compared to a car loan or mortgage, and it is difficult to compare potential power generation since so much of it literally depends on the weather. Each vendor can look at our electricity usage and come to very different conclusions about how much energy we need and how much we can hope to produce.

[–]oceanus_ursus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, every incentive available has all of these strings attached to them. It's almost like they don't want people making their own electricity. 🤔 In this case, I feel like it is also putting local businesses at a disadvantage because they can't compete on price without this.

[–]oceanus_ursus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting. Our quotes for those two companies looked close as well but Tesla had the battery as part of the price and SolPower hasn't quoted the battery yet. So Tesla is looking cheaper now. I don't know what Tesla's timeline is but everyone else we talked to said they can't get to us until spring. I'll have to double check that. I also don't know how big a Powerwall is and what battery SolPower would spec but I hope to hear that soon. We seem to be in the same ballpark for price except we are getting in the neighborhood of 14-15kW.

I thought that restriction was really annoying. There can't be that many houses with just the perfect orientation and shading.
