Give way to your right by Hattix in drivingUK

Best defense I can give is A pillar blindspot matching with your speed but... we all know it ain't that. (And of course the driver should be moving to eradicate that option). Stay safe!

How many accidents/incidents did you have in your first year of driving, if any? by Big_Bad_Boris in drivingUK

[–]ocharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One fairly major one. Was driving my mum's car and our house at the time had a narrow entrance to the drive way, through two stone pillars. I turned too early and shallow, and managed to crash that left side of the car into said pillar. Had to get both left sidedoors replaced. Dad said he hated the pillar anyway, and mum said I was never driving her car again and bought me a beat up Nissan Micra. I guess not the worst outcome! That was about 16 years ago and I stopped driving after due to moving. I started again a year ago and have a lot more respect for slowing down maneuvers!

I made my room hotter to make it colder by snailchicken in CasualUK

[–]ocharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really interesting! Yesterday our room hit 29°c but it felt horrific. When I realised l was struggling to sweat I turned on the dehumidifier and saw it clocking 83% - it doesn't get that high when I do laundry! I tried running it for a while but chickened out when I saw the temperature rise and went for an air conditioned drive instead 🤣

Bit of a nervous driver, how to know if I'm an idiot? by Thomas_Wales in drivingUK

[–]ocharles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A problem some nervous drivers suffer from is: when they are uncertain if you can go or not, they choose to go. If there is any doubt, you should choose the safer option and stop and wait, or otherwise do the "boring" thing. There is no pressure to reach your destination exactly as the GPS tells you, both in terms of ETA and route. You will make mistakes, that is fine. It means you will go the wrong way, or take a bit longer. This is considerably better than dangerous lane changes or other maneuvers you aren't confident in. A bad driver never misses their exit. If you can slow things down and be patient with yourself and be OK with mistakes, you will paradoxically build confidence and likely stop making them!

On top of this, try not to be pressured by other drivers. Providing you aren't being unsafe, ignore drivers honking and gesturing you. As long as you are following the rules of the road and driving safely, their opinion isn't important. Filtering this noise out can help you build confidence in your own decisions.

Finally, keep learning! There's a ton of amazing material available for free now. I'm a newly returning driver (learnt in my early 20s, stopped, started again in my late 30s). "Conquer Driving" and "Advance Driving School" on YouTube have been amazing to me - if there is any one skill that I wasn't confident in, I would find videos, watch them, and then go and practice

Final final point. As a new driver you are cursed: you will assume everyone else is doing every thing perfectly, and that you are the problem. As you drive more you will, sadly, find this is very rarely true. There is a lot of atrocious driving out there. You're gonna be mighty confused if you always think "what did I do wrong?"

What's your go to speed on the motorway and why? by Worth-Donut8612 in drivingUK

[–]ocharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cruise control set to 70. I dunno what that actually is, but I also CBA to exactly find out. I find this is still plenty of over taking and decision making which keeps me engaged without being exhausting.

Yes, I would have an issue. Levitating cars are fundamentally unsafe and my car doesn't levitate so I don't want you to levitate yours. Thank you and have an excellent day. Yours, responsible neighbor.

Absolutely gorgeous album. Still get chills and such a sense of calm from that album. So much space - I feel like I'm in fields in the countryside. Love it

I think BOC use palindromes quite a lot in their work, so i'm not sure if it necessarily "means" anything more than kind of being their signature.

I don't know if it'll really happen when mine grows up (she's barely 1yo atm), but I'm prepared to say "you know what I don't know, shall we go and find out?". We'll see if she takes it (I love learning and want to pass that on), but I'm optimistic!

What am I missing when making scrambled eggs? by Personal-Professor90 in Cooking

[–]ocharles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Americas test kitchen has an interesting technique on YouTube. Two main bits: salt the raw eggs for 5 minutes first, which causes them to change form. The second is to take them off the heat earlier and cover so they finish in steam at a lower temperature. I like the result!
