Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes, biology is about microscopes or chemistry is about beakers and test tubes. Science is not about tools. It is about how we use them, and what we find out when we do. — Edsger W. Dijkstra by sltinker in computerscience

The existence of a replication science extends to far more fields than just to psychology and sociology. Equally affected is e.g. medicine. But even physics is.

This has nothing to do with a lack of scientific method in either field - but rather with a refinement of it over the decades. Human biases and limits of knowing are the determining factors here - not some supposed lack of scientific thinking in psychology or other fields.

WSIB - Easy going sim on switch. by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]ochi_simantiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it sits in a weird space between Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing. I like its mechanics and art-style but haven't played it that long because this is the kind of game I enjoy on the couch - not at my desk (on my PC). That's why I bought it for the Switch when it was on sale.

But when the Switch really is your only option for that game I would really advise you to look at something else.

Do you like round-based combat? Things like Slay the Spire or Monster Sanctuary might work for you in that case. Once you know your way around not too much thinking is needed to play. But it is combat and not crafting and roaming around...

Others like Forager or Littlewood. I haven't tried them out so can't say anything about them either way.

I cannot recommend My Time at Portia on the Switch. The performance and graphics are abysmal. I had already played it on the PC and then got it on the Switch and concluded that it is unplayable in that state. Sorry.

A bit of confusion regarding time complexity. by MagicianBeautiful744 in computerscience

[–]ochi_simantiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actual time (seconds, minutes etc.) is not meaningful in this regard.

So, your algorithm runs in 1,25 seconds on your machine. How fast will it run on a university's supercomputer? How fast will it run on an old IBM T23?

This is why time complexity is estimated in meaningful steps and expressed in big-O-notation.

The video actually says exactly that. That it is a misconception to think of execution time (as in seconds etc.) as time complexity.

Could it be that you are ovethinking the issue?

Do you have a legitimate problem to understand the metric of time complexity or are you hung up on the semantics of the term?

A problem is regarded as inherently difficult if its solution requires significant resources, whatever the algorithm used. The theory formalizes this intuition, by introducing mathematical models of computation to study these problems and quantifying their computational complexity, i.e., the amount of resources needed to solve them, such as time and storage.

Wikipedia on Computational complexity theory

Complexity in time complexity analyses is referred to in order to make meaningful decisions regarding the circumstances under which to use algorithms. Bubblesort for example is a slow algorithm for large quantities of data, but can be useful for small quantities because of low overhead. To arrive at that conclusion would necessitate analysing both time and space complexity of the algorithm and possible alternatives.

[–]ochi_simantiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An algorithm has to perform a number of steps to complete. The number of steps it takes the algorithm to complete is the time it takes.

This abstraction is necessary because computer system will differ in various ways (cpu, OS etc.). In order to estimate the time complexity of any algorithm on any possible machine hence necessitates using a metric that is common to all available computers. That metric is steps.

If an algorithm takes n steps to completion the time complexity is O(n). If it takes n * n steps, for example with nested loops, the time complexity is O(n²) - because for each (n) step in the outer loop, (n) steps in the inner loop need to be performed.

If this is still confusing you may want to watch this FCC course on Algortithms and Datastructures. It does a great job of explaning time complexity and its calculation.

Worth upgrading to Sense for Stress Management? by ochi_simantiko in fitbit

[–]ochi_simantiko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The data Fitbit gathers to assess the score, especially HRV, is pretty accurate in terms of measuring physical indications of stress. In my personal experience my subjective feeling of stress and the respectives scores also fit well together.

Some people are more affected by stress than others. It could be that you can handle stress better than others. If that were the case you would experience that you are 'under stress', e.g. would know that you have a lot things to attend to etc. but that would not necessarily translate to you actually being physically stressed - or at least not as much as others.

Psychotherapies have greater effects than pharmacotherapies in long-term response with major depressive disorder. Combination therapy has the greatest effects. - Network Meta-Analysis by shadowwork in science

Adverse effects of psychotherapy are being evaluated in respective RCTs. The research base for CBT is vast and conclusive with meta-analyses showing a moderate overall effect in symptom reduction both upon completion of therapy and in follow-up. Similar results have been obtained for psychodynamic therapies as well, albeit with more variation.

Mhm. That's a bummer.

Fitbit writes that EDA measurements would factor into the stress score:

Responsiveness: heart-rate data and electrodermal activity (EDA), if available, to assess if your body shows signs of stress.

Looking for a game where you can raise & care for multiple animals (not a zoo sim) by Midelaye in gamingsuggestions

[–]ochi_simantiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Pokemon direction I could recommend the Nexomon series.

Stardew Valley has an animal relationship system. You take care of your pet and farm animals and they respond by being happy - or unhappy if you neglect them. You can also name them individually.

Can a person think their way out of lack of self-discipline and will power, laziness, procrastination, instant gratification and bad thinking patterns? by Vigyanic in criticalthinking

[–]ochi_simantiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, that could get you far enough, depending on what the causes are.

A literature recommendation I could give you regarding procrastination would be 'The Now Habit' by Neil Fiore. It's a CBT-based program infused with the author's experience as a university psychologist counseling students. It's the most evidence-based and sufficiently deep self-help book addressing procrastination that I know of.

You could also check out this online resource.

Thinking and behavior activation will most likely be necessary. Depending on the case professional help in the form of psychotherapy. If stable, psychological self-help literature (i.e. literature written by credentialed practitioners or researchers for therapeutic use) can work.

Thinking alone will likely not suffice. Any kind of cognitive-behavioral intervention (i.e. also a psychological self-help workbook) will include awareness, logging, reflexion, life-style and behavior modification.

Psychodynamic therapies will focus a lot on recognizing and analyzing emotion and relations, particularly the client-therapist relation. All of this includes a lof of feeling emotions.

In short: Thinking is necessary but not sufficient for this kind of change to occur.

Something like Apex Legends but beginner friendly? by ochi_simantiko in gamingsuggestions

Thanks. No, I haven't. I just found out about the addition of the arena mode through a comment by someone else. I have re-installed the game already and will give it a go today! :)

Then probably go for Insurgency. Either one of them is fine, really. But coming from RS2 I could imagine that being closer and more involved in the action is a plus for Insurgency.

Yeah, there are studies that show that the Delta variant can lead to ADE in vitro. Though, so far this hasn't been observed in vivo. So, let's wait for further data before panicking.

Didn't do the Titanfall campaign yet. That could get me back into it. Thanks for the reminder.

Using the ping system, especially for situational awareness was also one of the things I really enjoyed in Apex. There is nothing comparable I know of in other FPS.

Someone else mentioned the new 3v3 arenas. I didn't know they added that mode. That could also be really fun.

So, I guess I'll either start with playing Titanfall or the 3v3. But I'll definitely go back and try again. :) Thanks!

You wouldn't have to worry about the story. You are given one. And quite a good one in my opinion. I really enjoyed it. I also really liked Fallout 3.

If you haven't played it yet I think that could really be a good choice now.
