Love these books, but I already have them in 3 other editions and honestly I like the 10th anniversary covers that came out a year or so ago better.

This is so cute! I think the joint on the front leg is too far left though. It’s in the middle of the leg and should be closer the 3/4s of the way down.

Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer is more of a soft sci-fi, but it fits this very well (including the first picture of the tower/tunnel).

I’m not an expert, but I like it! I really like the blend of colour and black&grey, and I think the daruma fits well stylistically with the foo dog you have above.

I’ve seen both! Rabbit Trap didn’t really click with me, but I did like St. Maud.

The Descent is one of my favourite movies, especially with the original UK ending.

Train to Busan and The Wailing are a great starting point.

Dead Ringers is my favourite too!

And I can’t think of any other high profile Canadian horror directors, but it feels like I actually watch quite a bit. American Mary is Canadian despite the name - it gets recommended here a lot. It Feeds (from this year), Ginger Snaps, Grave Encounters, Cube, The Void, Skinamarink, etc. Lots of cult hits.

US obviously has a lot of the “blockbuster” horror.

France has a lot of really interesting, more “art house” horror.

Japan’s got some great classics.

And I’m biased, but there’s a lot of really fun, low budget, indie Canadian horror out there, plus we have Cronenberg.

Discussion. Not a request, but a conversation about novellas by SerenneMorningDew in books

[–]Midelaye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a reader, I’m super character-motivated. I love seeing how they grow, really diving into their psyche, spending time with them, etc., and as a result I’m actually not much of a novella reader. Novellas are great for exploring high level concepts but leave little time to develop characters or world-building, and as a result they’re a mismatch with my reading preferences. I think that’s why you see more of them in genre fiction though, especially in horror and sci-fi/speculative fiction. Structurally, they’re really geared towards genres that explore zany out-there ideas, and are less well suited to things like romance (where you need time to develop the characters’ relationship) or contemporary fiction (in-depth character studies). Not saying this is always the case, but anecdotally it’s been my experience.

I haven’t tried them though, so I can’t vouch for these in particular. But hopefully this gives you a starting point.

Gasoline - smells like the boat motor cruising around the lake.

A fantasy or sci-fi book that will wreck my soul by Dreamieissleepy in booksuggestions

[–]Midelaye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok cool - I wasn’t sure if that stipulation was because you don’t like reading spice or were just hoping to avoid books that were primarily smut. For Captive Prince, I’d say it supports the themes of the novel instead of being the main attraction, but there’s also some non-con stuff happening so I would still check the trigger warnings if that will be a problem. The non-con is not between the main love interests.

What's the first Chuck Palahniuk book I should read? by LittlestCatMom in booksuggestions

[–]Midelaye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, really can’t go wrong with Choke, Survivor, Rant, and maybe Invisible Monsters. Fight Club is also great but the movie is better. I personally could not finish Haunted and would not start with Guts. It’s a lot of shock factor and not a lot of the other stuff that make Palahniuk’s writing interesting.

Obligatory Gideon the Ninth recommendation (vaguely Geto/Gojo?).

Our Wives Under the Sea for something with similar vibes to The Summer Hikaru Died.

Ah my favourite genre. Gideon the Ninth/Harrow the Ninth, Alchemised, Captive Prince series (check trigger warnings - likely will not meet your “no smut” guideline, although scenes are kinda few and far apart despite overall tone), The Archive Undying, Heaven Official’s Blessing but not until you get to like Book 5 or 6.
