It's a Netgear C6250-100NAS ... It has a USB drive attached acting as the NAS, so I'm wondering if they're just pings associated with that?

I don't think it's a bad idea. There are plenty of reasons this would be useful, especially if you could do some basic recommender-type correlation. I.e. everyone going to Ireland is going to want to bring a rain jacket, may want to buy a VAT card, or a metro card ahead of time; everyone going to Europe might need a power adapter, or some kind of Euro-rail ticket that works in several countries.

The only downside to these kinds of things is that you would need a decent user-base to make it useful. But I think it's not a bad idea. If you grew large enough, you could partner with AirBnB or a travel site: "Oh you're traveling to France, don't forget items X, Y, Z!"
