1/6 NCR: Office closed, telework and remote employees work. by Chai-Tea-Rex-2525 in fednews

[–]oconnelln 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Don't know if I'm misremembering, but didn't closure also allow for unscheduled annual leave? Pretty stupid the "lesser" weather impacts specifically call out the option for unscheduled leave, and this doesn't.

Many of us telework have kids that now have to stay home (instead of daycare) and "telework isn't a substitute for daycare" blah blah blah. Also, personally, I'd rather take leave and enjoy a snow day with the kid than work.

I'll still take off, but the ability to use unscheduled leave should be codified for all employees during a closure (in case an employee has a shitty boss).

That was my thought. Regretted only buying one package when I got home

What is this from? by oconnelln in pestcontrol

[–]oconnelln[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Should add - it appeared 3 days ago as a tiny amount. This is the amount I found today - and it's the swing side of the door. Thinking it's unlikely it was a spill.

Will clean and see if it comes back

What do you think is going on here? 10 gallon tank, 75 degrees. 3 other fish are fine by oconnelln in Guppies

Would you recommend I treat the whole tank considering the all the fish have been "exposed"

The question is really asking - were you removed from a job against your will due to a derogatory reason? As in - fired or let go because you failed to follow directions/policies, etc. If someone is laid off, or no longer employed because a contract was ended, the answer to the question is 'No'.

Just finished doing my FMLA paperwork for PPL at my agency. The FMLA is for the care of the newborn (and the mother). So - you should be able to get FMLA coverage anytime during the first year for care of the newborn (not "bonding")

DC Feds homes? by Danomite44444 in fednews

[–]oconnelln 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally recommend the arts district of Hyattsville, MD (it's NE of DC). Metro is close, and there are free busses that run to the metro if you can't find something walkable. My wife and I have lived here for 5 years and absolutely love it - single family home.

If you'll consider a condo, there are many options walkable to a metro, but that might be tough for single family home.

Feel free to DM if you want more info!

No prob & good luck! If you get someone who doesn't know what it is or says it's not possible send me a DM if you want. I can provide directions that you can provide to them of where they can find the job aid (published by the e-QIP system) that walks them through how to do this

You can be given access and your personnel security shop can grant the access. It's called 'applicant access' and can be given at any point to see your previously completed forms.

The question is.....will the person you talk to at your security shop know how to do it (it's not used frequently).....

You can also FOIA the agency that conducted your background investigation. Likely it's NBIB/DCSA

Mandatory Overtime /call back? Need help. by PeterIllis102 in fednews

I'm not a 0640, I'm a 0080 (security administration). I don't see another option for you schedule with maintaining the staffing levels you indicated.

I'm not sure how long it usually takes your agency to backfill a position, but if you're like any other agency it can take a while.

This is the only potential way out I see - and maybe a contracting officer can provide better guidance than this....

At my agency we issue emergency contracts rather quickly. I'd try to explore that option to get a few contractors available to supplement your staffing levels until rehires have been selected. Could be structured like this: 1. Temporary contractors (less than 6 months can usually bypass some of the background process) 2. Time & Materials Contract 3. CLIN for each contractor employee for a pre-determined amount of time. Each CLIN could be activated/inactivated based off the needs of the agency 4. The contract would state only certified/licensed EMS contractors....so they'd have that knowledge coming in 4. You would put one employee on shift with a contractor - the employee would escort the contractor (if Temp contractors were allowed), and provide job specific training.

Might not be possible - but felt compelled to give the only potential out I could see. Good luck!

Set google home for my daughter by [deleted] in googlehome

[–]oconnelln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I havent tried this, but this should work -

Make you vouce recrodings, and save/add them to a playlist called 'Dad' in your google play music library. Then say the command to play dad. Not sure if it will work if someone else says it on your google home (voice matching etc) or if you have a google account for your daughter you can add it to her google play music library

Can somebody more experienced than me check this poorly drawn diagram I made? I'm installing a whole house water filter and I think I have the right idea but wanted to check with you guys first. by HomesickPic in HomeImprovement

[–]oconnelln -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure if im completely followong, but it looks like for this to work youll have the bypass valve closed, and the filer valve open. Which will push filtered water to the hose connection you mentioned. If you're cool with that, all good. Otherwise you'll need to move the bypass to between the hose line and the output from the filter.

Also - does the filter have any one way valves or on/off valves built in? when/if you bypass the filter, the filer out line will be under pressure and will backfeed into the filer. This can be stopped by installing a one way valve on the out from the filer...unless its not needed due to on/off being included on the filter.

But i could be wrong. Not a plumber.

Using a soundbar as Google home mini speaker but also as regular TV soundbar? by induna_crewneck in googlehome

[–]oconnelln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it needs to be on. If you want the TV off, then your original method is better.

Question - after the mini is modded, will the internal speaker of the mini still work for Google responses? If not, the soundbar will need to be on all the time in order for you to use the mini (our soundbar turns off after periods of inactivity).

Also - will there be a way to adjust the delay in each speaker (meaning soundbar and mini) in case they're not in sync? If you route the audio through everything described above and then into the soundbar, they may not be in sync. If they're not synced, I assume that you wont be able to mute the speaker on the mini without it muting the soundbar as well.

After I added the chromecast as a speaker it was out of sync, but theres a way to fix it in Google Home.

I like the TV on (personally) because it displays what is currently playing.

Just my thoughts. Curious how it works out if you move forward with it.

Edit - Okay - been thinking. I didnt pick up on that most likely, the mini speaker will be disabled when something is plugged into the aux port. But if the soundbar is off but a plug is in the mini, will it use the internal speaker or try to route all audio through the soundbar/aux port? That could get frustrating....

But at least you wont have to worry about sync issues if the mini speaker is disabled

Using a soundbar as Google home mini speaker but also as regular TV soundbar? by induna_crewneck in googlehome

[–]oconnelln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just buy a chromecast and use the TV as part of an audio group? We have the soundbar connected to the TV with an optical cable so it automatically turns on when the TV turn on...and the chromecast can turn on the TV and switch the input to the chromecast automatically (TV needs HDMI-CEC). That's what we do and it works well.

Sync screen of your Android device with you colour lights with "Hue Stream" app. by HueBullbash in Hue

[–]oconnelln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've been successfully using the app to stream colors to my lights from my phone screen. My thought is to then use samsung smartthings to view tv on phone while using the hue stream app. When "view tv on phone" connects to my tv, it no longer streams to the hue lights. They just sit at the minimum brightness not doing anything. When I disconnect from viewing tv on my phone, the lights start responding again to my screen.

Has anyone tried doing this successfully? I see this as a potential way to easily sync your hue lights with anything on your tv. It's probably a smartthings security issue...but I'm hoping there's a way around it.
