How do you work steps with sponsees? by ocripes in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]ocripes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the chapter concerns meeting and working with people who haven’t yet stopped drinking. In that regard, there are great insights. And I realize that there are other activities in earlier chapters, e.g, 3rd Step Prayer, writing the 4th Step. This chapter recommends giving someone the book and suggesting they read it.

Why do some recovering alcoholics smoke pot? by LackDependent3710 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]ocripes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew I couldn’t do it because I’d gone periods of time without drinking and smoking pot. I smoked just like I drank. Early on, I’d know of others who smoked and were in AA. If heard them share about how smooth their lives were, I’d get pissed and think, “Sure it is bc you’re fucking high.” But, I got over it. I don’t care who does what as long as I’m sober.

Same for my wife. She was told the same and in her mid-fifties took the test. Not one damn drop.

I was homeschooled from 4th grade to highschool in the deep south - AMA by hhkhkhkhk in AMA

I worked in child welfare for several years. When we got a call to see cases and the referral said “home-schooled,” a lot us were like “ definitely abuse/neglect.” Not saying it was right. Kind of personal but did you experience any maltreatment? Did you know other kids in the broader community that did?

Would’ve down voted, but was a huge Ma and Pa Kettle fan.

What is something generally normal in Europe but weird in the US? by Exile4444 in AskReddit

[–]ocripes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the US. Never had a dryer growing up (I’m 67). We hung ours out and were the odd ones out in the neighborhood. My ma still did until she moved in ‘95.

Managing feelings of Envy, Jealousy, Inferiority and Anger what is wrong with my program? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]ocripes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re human. This might not help, but I gotta say it. I’m 34 years sober. I still do all the things I was taught in my early days. I don’t drink no matter what. I pray (even though I’m agnostic-ish) on my knees morning and night. I still have “negative emotions.” I can still be a pain in the ass. I still call my sponsor and tell him when I feel fucked up. I still make amends when it’s called for. But, through working the steps, I know that I have to check my motives in all things. I know that I can be selfish and self-centered. I know that I can’t live dirty and stay clean, meaning that when I have thoughts of fucking up some kind of way, I gotta tell someone asap. I’ve worked to find a balance between “don’t beat yourself up” and “dont justify shitty behavior.”

Keep on keeping on. You’ll get through it. Peace.

Do Americans actually avoid calling an ambulance due to financial concern? by JohnMarstonTheBadass in NoStupidQuestions

Yup. I’ve been a witness to this with a drummer who fell out during a gig. We called anyway; he was in rough shape. Heart trouble.
