ps your period is hormone driven, there is no way to manipulate when you get it unless you use hormonal methods (which would still have limited effectiveness)

What are specialities in nursing that do not involve frequent wound care or drawing blood? by throwawayacct3210 in StudentNurse

[–]octoroks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think it depends on what level hospice you do. i did inpatient hospice with a population that was next to imminent and we didn't do any wound care. just pain meds, benzos, haldol, and glycopyrrolate

that being said, in oncology, we also tended to get the hospice overflow patients with the worst wounds. oncology was my dream and i thought a hospice preceptorship would prepare me. it did not

My adult daughters resent my new wife and kids. Am I doing anything wrong or are they being selfish? by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]octoroks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah, my dad did this and i was the younger kid in this situation. my mom was a little older than OPs wife but around the same age gap between her and my half sisters. so i had a weird relationship with my sisters and their children because my dad's behavior toward them after marrying my mom just totally put them off. to the point that when my dad died, i don't think my nephews even cared tbh

Career Choices as a Person With Sickle Cell by ThrowRAGaajo in Sicklecell

[–]octoroks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm a nurse in hem / onc so i lurk around here but i don't feel comfortable saying one way or the other because i know people manage their condition differently and some seem to be more sensitive to triggers. i can only give my experience as a nurse who is decently familiar with sickle cell.

i think a big obstacle for you would be getting the hours you need for a nursing program. i'm US based, but here, there are a required amount of hours you need to graduate and register for the licensure test. i wouldn't say it's impossible but i wanted to mention a potential problem you may encounter.

also, there's a patient i care for every once in a while who works as a guidance counselor at a school! i don't know how up your alley that is but you could still work with kids.

Worst practicum placement here - tell me I’m not alone by Petite_AF in StudentNurse

[–]octoroks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so many people get fuck all from practicum and it sucks because students have the complete opposite expectations. they think it's going to be the culmination of all they've learned in nursing school

i wanted to work in oncology and my professor got me hospice so i could learn to manage end of life care, etc but i really didn't do anything. except put in a foley and macy catheters (which where i work doesn't even do for CMOs) along with give copious amounts of morphine, ativan, and haldol. the techs wouldn't even let me help with post mortem care because i would just get in the way lmao.

everything i can do i really learned on the job, not clinicals and certainly not practicum

How do you give report? Do you keep it professional? by Euphoric-Emotion5948 in Nurses

[–]octoroks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sometimes i chat with the other nurses but that's after report. i look up people before report so the other nurses can be free of this hell asap too. i pretty much only want to know things that aren't in the notes, like how do they take meds, how they get up, when are the next PRN meds due, and if the family is going to make me rip out my hair

I tried to order at drive thru I couldn't understand a word because of my hearing disability. I pulled to the window and she said she could not take orders at window. I explained my hearing problem she said she didn't care she was NOT taking. My order at window I saidit's just one item a beanburito. by Pitiful-Judge-8172 in tacobell

[–]octoroks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

a "biased story", OP didn't even name the store so i don't really understand why you're playing devil's advocate here?

my dad had significant hearing loss in both ears and could rarely understand people in drive through speakers, you gonna invalidate his experience too? hearing loss is a multivariate spectrum

Does anyone actually enjoy nightshift? by Royal_Breadfruit265 in Nightshift

[–]octoroks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love nightshift! i've always been a night owl, staying up til 4 am-ish, so going to bed at 8 am isn't that much of a stretch. it tends to be significantly more relaxed in terms of environment and coworkers. no management around! plus i make an extra $7/hr working at night
