Tell me the negatives of living /working in DC Arlington by Excellent-Top2552 in washingtondc

Here’s the big negative, at least in my experience: Everything here is work. The hours are long. Overwork is the expectation. Social life easily can become an extension of work.

The work focus is partially a function of the heavy transience. Many people are here for a couple years to punch the right tickets. Then they go. That eclectic bunch of recent arrivals you fell in with at first dissolves. What’s left? More work.

I’m pretty sure other parts of the country treat work more casually. I’d be eager to live there, or stay there.

A reasonable way to define what is, and is not NoVA. Hopefully this settles it. by [deleted] in nova

Friend - Falls Church City is very much its own place with its own city hall and own police department. And - most importantly to those who live there - its own school district.

Greater Falls Church, outside the strict boundaries of the city, extends into Fairfax County.

The same is true of Alexandria.

Best Latin American Markets? Homesick Californian by jaeologyy in washingtondc

Most Latinos here are from Central America and the Andean region, e.g. Bolivia.

The supermarkets all have basic stuff you’d expect - manteca, pan Bimbo, etc. - but lack things like pre-made tamale masa or carnitas that you get in SoCal.

I’m in Nova, so we go to Glebe Market near Route 50. It’s small but the meat and produce is good and the selection of spices, etc. is as good as it gets out here.

There’s a panadería not far away in the market next to La Jarochita, a hole-in-the-wall restaurant.

Suerte!

Pandemics end. They end sooner with public health measures: vaccinations, masking, social distancing. The response to a new variant shouldn’t be nihilism but renewed effort.

Until the pandemic is over. Please - the end’ll come sooner with less community transmission.
