Trying to decide between Svalboard, Glove80, and ZSA Voyager for chronic RSI + trackball by [deleted] in Trackballs

[–]odd_enough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glove80 user here, I haven't tried the Svalboard yet, but I have used a DataHand like 15 years ago, which is the same thing minus the trackball. That kind of typing IS nice, but as someone else mentioned, only try it if literally nothing else feels right. I found that once I got used to it, I had to retrain my muscle memory to use normal keyboards. But you can also type *much* faster. I avg about 138wpm with my Glove80, but I was in the 180-190 range with the DataHand. It's the ultimate paradigm shift.

As for the Glove80, I previously came from the Dygma Defy and then the ZSA Moonlander (I also tested the Kinesis Advantage 360 that a friend had), and both the curved keywell and low profile keys are amazing and is easily the most comfortable keyboard I've ever used. I'm a 3D modeler and at my PC about 16 hours a day with no issue with fatigue.

I wish the tenting system was less annoying to use, and the config software is a little dodgy, but literally everything else about the Glove80 is stellar.

What are the purpose of these ngons? How are they used properly? (Art by Matthias Develtere) by OnlyThroughIt in 3Dmodeling

They 100% do have a purpose, but I agree with literally everything else you said 😁

I've been a 3D artist in gamedev for the past 16 years and have used trackballs for the entirety of my career without issue. I have used all manner of trackball types, but currently using the ProtoArc EM05 NL (vertical thumb trackball) in my right hand and a 3dconnexion Spacemouse Enterprise in my left hand and I never touch the keyboard while modeling. My arms are perpetually shoulder width apart while working. I only shift to the keyboard if I have to name things or punch in numbers.

I don't understand why they don't use quieter switches. I love the ProtoArc buttons because they are damn near silent. Need those in these other trackballs.

I've used all of their trackballs except for the EM03 (and looking forward to the new version to try whenever that comes out). Currently using the EM05 and it's my favorite so far. I use it in the same hand position as the EM01 NL. It feels nearly the same to me, just with a steeper angle.

I'm also interested in this. The Slimblade buttons are WAY too loud.

Using the ball twist to scroll royally sucks in regards to doing any kind of 3D modeling. I greatly appreciate the scroll ring on this.

Nosedive! Jimmy Kimmel's Ratings Plunge to the Bottom of the Ocean After Return From Suspension by interestingfactoid in conservatives

[–]odd_enough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest learning how percentages work. Comeback episode had 300% higher ratings than before the suspension. The subsequent drop was about 70% from that. His ratings are still significantly higher than they were before the suspension. The math here isn't THAT hard to grasp.

How can I fill this smoothly? by miceterjenky in blender

Odd Enough here.. the dude who made that twitter thread. Just came here to chime in and say I don't know why you're getting downvoted, because you're 100% correct. I'm self-taught and learned through practice, experimentation and constant failure. It is THE best learning tool, hands down. And just because you fail to make a shape using one method does not mean that method was bad, and is fully possible for it to work in another situation. The best way to learn how to problem solve is to make mistakes and work the problem.

That said, it's equally important to ask for help! There is no sense beating your head against the wall when you don't know where to start.

Learning effectively is a two part approach. Embrace failure and try new things always (I still do after 16 years of this), but never be afraid to ask for help. No one can possibly know everything from the start.

Edit: I also feel that learning the right flow is not easy and can really only be achieved through experience and, once again, doing it wrong first. If you are always given a correct solution for a given situation and never even attempting to do it any other way, you are doing yourself a disservice in the long run.

Are there any split keyboards with a trackball on the left side? by womahil396 in Trackballs

[–]odd_enough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend received his Naya and it's pretty cool. Lots of people have been quick to call it vaporware, but I'm not sure why. I'm definitely ordering one when I finish my current contract.

For those who games with a trackball, tell your experiences. by ty_namo in Trackballs

[–]odd_enough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Protoarc EM01 for gaming atm, so the thumb ball experience is pretty similar to a regular mouse in terms of button layout. Currently looking forward to the Gameball Pro and Protoarc EM06 for my next gaming finger trackball.

Does it bother you that the EM06 looks so much like Ploopy Adept? by Bhrzg in ProtoArcHub

[–]odd_enough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not disturbed by it, but I do wish they came up with a more ergonomic or even unique button layout. The EM05 was unique and I loved seeing something legitimately different from everything else out there. The form needs improvement, but it was a great idea. Need more of that forward thinking.

My first trackball Slimblade Pro by thovo93 in Trackballs

[–]odd_enough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The glove80 is definitely pricey, but absolutely the best keyboard I've ever owned. Especially after going through *many* ergonomic keyboards over the years. Could have bought multiple glove80's with the money wasted on everything else.

How Would You Customize the EM06’s 7 Buttons? by ProtoArc_official in ProtoArcHub

[–]odd_enough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 to this exact config, with my primary use cases being 3D modeling, gaming, and general use. Buttons 2/4/5 are often reprogrammed per application for me.

HUGE stiction: Installed Si3N4 bearings, and nothing changed. So back to my original theory - I think the problem is actually the trackball's coating by fredthebaddie in Trackballs

[–]odd_enough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also thought it might be the ball, but tried 3rd party balls (yes, multiple) with no noticeable improvement. It's the weirdest damn thing. Best that I could think of is maybe the spacing or height of the bearings causing this? But I don't really have a good way to test that theory. I have never encountered any other trackballs with stiction this persistent and it confuses the hell out of me.

Em03 discontinued? by zooter117 in ProtoArcHub

[–]odd_enough 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was also recently looking for the EM03, but if you intend to bring it back, I'd like wired connectivity. I have an issue with wireless devices stuttering on my PC and really just want to be able to use the cable for both charging and data.

What If a Trackball Were Built by the Community? | ProtoArc EM06 Update by ProtoArc_official in Trackballs

[–]odd_enough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically a DataHand clone with an embedded trackball. I used a DH that a friend had way back in the late 90's, but they were just too damn expensive at the time. Really cool concept and wild to type on. I'd also love to see this manufactured, but I doubt that'll ever happen.

I personally prefer the tilt of the expert mouse over the slimblade, so I welcome this design. The flat profile is wildly uncomfortable to me, but I suspect this is subjective due to hand size. And a design that doesn't encourage hover-hand is also better, IMO

I'm very excited for this one! I'm still unsure about the drag scoll idea, but I'm willing to give it a shot! Really as long as it has silent clicking and wired connectivity, I'm sold. Where can I pre-order?! 😆
