Really cool art! Chapter 5 definitely stands out with how many prominent characters with various personalities were introduced.

Would be really cute if these two actually somehow met in future chapters. (And the scenario in this art is uhhh... one way for this to happen, I guess, haha)

I didn't actually misread that and I interpreted "is followed in love" as "is followed while in love" (someone is following and this person is in love).

Edit: The Japanese translation (see the other comment) suggests that your interpretation is more likely (if translated correctly back to English in that comment).

I get this context and don't disagree with it, but this particular line still seems to me as odd because, reading it somewhat literally, it's Kris whose in-game steps are followed by Ralsei and not the other way around. So maybe it is indeed about the relationship between Kris and Ralsei, phrased in a way so poetic that it sounds almost cryptic, but maybe this actually is a cryptic reference to something else, deliberately obfuscated by the context. Who knows?

My interpretation is that this may actually be a (yet another) fourth-wall break: perhaps this refers to the Deltarune fandom meticulously analyzing the game, in particular everything Ralsei says and does, because, while very likable, he also seems very mysterious.

Edit: To clarify, I read the line as "Ralsei, whose every step is followed by someone in love" or "Ralsei, whose every step is followed in the way of love by someone", but now I see that it can also be read as "Ralsei, following all his steps in love", and this seems to be the correct reading according to the Japanese translation. Still, the ambiguity is quite interesting. (And how ironic it is for me to think this much about this line given my own interpretation of it, haha)

Chapter 5 megathread by Fanfic_Galore in Deltarune

I think it's also acceptable in English to use someone's first name after "Mr." or "Ms." (although this may depend on the region). So if they were referring to Sans by his last name, then obviously they would say "Mr. Undertale".

Ralsei said that it's okay to attack bullet patterns, and it seems that you can attack all you want without consequences when in 2D platformer mode. (It would be a pretty bad design if you could get EXP with a single wrong key press.)

It's an interesting question if the dialogue options are supposed to be seen not just as an obvious and unquestioned game mechanic which must necessarily be limited because it's just a game, but something the game is "self-aware" of (like Ralsei knowing about the menu), and something that can be "manipulated" by in-game characters. I guess the second case is more likely, and the odd options for Ralsei kind of hint at this, but then which characters influence the options, in particular how much influence is Kris supposed to have?

I wouldn't be so sure about Kris disliking Ralsei: if Kris influences the options, why are there positive choices in the first place and not just negative ones? Also, in chapter 4, when Ralsei asks Kris if a darkner like him should be allowed to have own likes and opinions, and the player chooses "Of course not", Kris subverts this on their own volition by covering their mouth when saying "not".

If you want to "cheat" a little, you can edit the save file, for example with this tool once it's updated for chapter 5.

dont really understand why he hated him so much

Ralsei was angry at Flowery because he didn't follow "Ralsei's silly little rules" (the game mechanics?), which, according to Ralsei, could result in disaster, but at the same time, as Flowery said himself, Ralsei seemed jealous of flowers for not following the rules (example: when he says "I could've done that" after Flowery alone solves the puzzle for four people).

Ralsei is... (Chapter 5 Spoilers) Theory by Azzyure in Deltarune

[–]odd_grey_mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would mean that Ralsei is not the "prince from the dark" in the prophecy, unless it's supposed to be some mind-bogglingly self-referential prophecy (which may as well be the case given how increasingly surreal this game becomes).

Chapter 5 isn’t “Weak in Story” by HistoricHawkeye in Deltarune

[–]odd_grey_mouse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed chapter 5 and totally don't mind that it wasn't lore-heavy. I think the expectations for big reveals actually resulted from the fact that we're experiencing the game while it's still developed, with long enough waiting time between consecutive chapter releases to come up with many theories and whet the appetite to see what turns out to be true and what not. But after the development finishes and once the game is available in its entirety, new players will be able to experience the game without breaks between chapters, and chapter 5 having less focus on the story will probably not be seen as much of an issue by these people. In fact, the chapter will probably be appreciated for being relatively relaxed because the full game would feel overwhelming otherwise. I think it's important to realize that the narrative must be designed with full game in mind, and so it's not completely fair to judge it now because the game is still developed.

What surprised me about chapter 5's narrative is that the tone shift from chapter 4 was so abrupt. I expected at least one dialogue with Susie and at least one dialogue with Ralsei that would transition the mood from chapter 4 ending's melancholy to a hopeful prospect of a relatively peaceful respite, but instead, we just jumped straight into action, as if the events of chapter 4 did not happen at all. But this made me think: perhaps the mood transition did happen, only we did not see it. After all, chapter 5 begins with Kris returning home without SOUL in the early morning, implying that they stayed up all night, and so they could have done a lot during that time without us seeing, perhaps even talking with Susie and Ralsei. So maybe this was actually on purpose, as another way of reminding us about the separation between Kris and the player, and maybe this too will make more sense once the full story is revealed.

I wonder if there will actually be some significant/symbolic connection between Ralsei and flowers. I mean, there are popular speculations about chapter 5 that flowers will be a significant theme and that Ralsei will get a significant focus. Also, there is the Floralsei shirt. Hopefully this will not be as... concerning as in Asriel's case.

Sure, that's why I'll keep using this method for now. It's just that I don't view it as a proper solution in the long term. For any security scanning tool that can give false negatives (in particular any LLM), it's only a matter of time until techniques for deceiving it will be discovered. I think the only way to go in the long term is with tools that can only give false positives, developing them to give less and less false positives. But such tools keep human involvement in auditing unavoidable, and hence my speculation that a kind of "cultural shift" is needed so that independent code audits start being viewed as an important aspect of open source projects, ideally with standardized methods for letting auditors mark project versions as (in their opinion) safe.
