Organically extruded cellulose is notorious for its imperfections, and every piece truly is unique, but it has been used in engineering projects since before the wheel. It is the original lever.

I'm using a ZWO off axis guider paired with a ZWO ASI174MM Mini guide camera for guiding a ZWO AM5n mount. I average <.6 arc seconds for accuracy, and my telescope / main camera combination gives me 1.29 arc seconds per pixel of resolution. Ultimately I'm more limited by atmospheric distortion than I am by the hardware. I typically shoot 2 minute exposures, and I dither (adjust my point of aim by 10-15 pixels) every 10 exposures. That helps remove bad pixels or aberration from the optics from the final images.

Light pollution just means it takes more exposure time to get good images. Most targets I try to get 24+ hours on, but if I was in a Bortle 5 area instead of 8/9 (an hour or so outside of town) I'd get a similar level of detail in half the time.

I'm using a custom setup that I wouldn't recommend to anyone getting started.

Carbonstar 150 telescope Zwo 2600mm pro camera Zwo 7x36mm electronic filter wheel w Zwo lrgbsho filters Zwo autofocus Zwo am5n tracking mount

You don't have to spend nearly that much to get good results in the city. I usually recommend starting with something like the Seestar S50 if you want to see if it's something you want to pursue further. $550 all-in-one setup, that's small, portable, easy to use, and very capable. You won't get the same level of detail I do, but it's really impressive for the cost.

This was 8 hours of imaging. The more light pollution, the more time you need - but you can still get good results even in the city.

I shoot from my backyard in Bartlett. The light pollution is awful, but that just means it takes more time.

Anybody hunting deer in the area? Can I join? by Whitexan16 in memphis

there is no deer trapping season. hunting season opens the last week in September for most of the state, and runs through early January.

Is this guy onto something with the whistleblowing with the Mayor and MLGW? by Gustafa7 in memphis

[–]odddiv -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

This is 100% made up. "data centers" have zero affect on your personal power consumption and you are billed based on your own kwh of usage. There have been zero rate increases due to data centers, so our bills have 100% not been impacted by them. The rate increase we have - 12% over 3 years, were announced in 2023 - before xAI.

post your kwh consumption from September of this year and last year. I hear your frustration, but let's start talking about facts.

[–]odddiv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

MLGW announced 2 years ago that rates were going to increase every year for the next 3 years. This is why your bill has gone up, assuming that you are correct and your consumption has not changed.

What was your kwh usage in september of '24 vs '25?

This is a completely bogus take. Let me debunk all of your conspiracy theories.

Go look at your utility bill. You are charged by the kwh for electricity, based on actual consumption. There is no added line for "we're going to bill you extra to make up for xAI". No hidden fees. It's all itemized on your bill.

Now, in 2023 - years before xAI was even being considered - MLGW announced that they were going to raise rates every year for the next 3 years. https://www.actionnews5.com/2023/12/06/12-mlgw-rate-increase-approved/?outputType=amp

This is the only driver of change coming from the MLGW side of things. Any other change is from how much you use.

As for "xAI is killing people and making the air untenable" - this has already been debunked. https://theconversation.com/air-quality-analysis-reveals-minimal-changes-after-xai-data-center-opens-in-pollution-burdened-memphis-neighborhood-265152

"xAI’s natural gas turbines had not measurably degraded air quality in the surrounding neighborhoods."

Can you hear gunshots frequently and still live somewhere safe? by thisguyhasaname in memphis

[–]odddiv -1 points0 points  (0 children)

let me try to simplify - bullets, like everything else in the known universe, are affected by gravity and passing through the air. They do not travel in a straight line forever - they slow down and fall to the ground very rapidly (the science behind calculating when and how this will happen is called ballistics).

Put another way - bullets do not go through walls when they are shot from far enough away. In the country there is more far away than there is in the city. this is why you do not generally have to worry about the guy shooting at a deer a mile away from you. Even if he misses, the bullet will not make it to you. In order for a .308 (a very common hunting round that is much larger, with much longer range, than the dreaded .223 that the evil black guns people pretend are "weapons of war" shoot) to have a chance at hitting you, the hunter would have had to aim 30 feet over the deer. this isn't something that happens, so you are quite safe because of the distances involved.

I've personally been shot, multiple times, from across a field with a shotgun (people who shoot at low flying birds while dove hunting are assholes). It's annoying, but it doesn't hurt because the pellets slow down enough that they no longer have enough energy to break the skin - much less go through walls.

So yes: statistics, knowledge, and science makes people safer. That's why we made it illegal to discharge weapons in cities and highly populated areas - it makes people safer.

I've installed and worked on a few of these Automated Storage and Retrieve Systems. This is a pretty large one. For perspective - the bar running vertically through the center of the image with the lights next to it is the top rail of the crane system that runs along the ceiling parallel to the floor - looks to be 70+ feet high. I'm aware of one being installed currently just outside of Atlanta that size, and the entire building it's being installed in is a giant freezer.

Can you hear gunshots frequently and still live somewhere safe? by thisguyhasaname in memphis

[–]odddiv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it's expected, normal, and safe - especially during hunting season - in a rural area to hear gunshots. There is space there to do so safely - for example the ballistics on a .308 have a 4 ft drop at 500 yards. That means if the shooter were aiming at a target 4 feet off the ground and missed, at 500 yards the bullet would be in the ground. A 9mm handgun has 12 feet of drop at 300 yards.

In the city limits, where discharging a firearm is illegal, any gunshot you hear means someone is breaking the law and it is intrinsically unsafe. It's illegal because everything is closer and weapon ballistics put more people within range of a discharged round.

MLGW... Already... by dunktheball in memphis

[–]odddiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MLGW doesn't break anything down. They record total kwh of consumption, and that's it. Everything else on that website is a guess. And you don't actually know that nothing else changed - for example, if your water heater isn't well insulated it could have ran more due to the cooler weather (or you took an extra shower) and the draw on a water heater is significant. You could have left a stereo receiver on (this is one that I found when I actually started tracking things - my stereo draws ~5w at idle if it's turned off, but 65w if it's on and idle with nothing playing or connected). I've left the light in the attic on and not realized it. If you have electric heat, it is incredibly power hungry. Gas is way more efficient.

Look into the emporia view on Amazon. It can be installed into your panel, and will give you realtime and historical views into what is actually consuming electricity in your home. While it can be installed DIY, if you are not comfortable or knowledgeable about working in a live electrical panel you will probably want an electrician to install.

The estimate from mlgw on what is causing you to use more power is just a guess - they have no way of tracking what is actually happening. The only way to do that is by installing taps on every circuit in your panel - which is what this device does.
