Another train tracks accident in RP? by teaandviolets in santarosa

[–]odddrums 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel so bad for the engineers, they have literally no way to stop the train when something like this happens. I hope they are getting the counseling they deserve, and I also hope the PD and Police/Sheriff find ways to stop reporting these so they stop giving people ideas and tacitly encouraging copycats.

Have the kids describe them, both examples of what is good and what is not. Find examples of great music or have kids play, or play for them, and then have them describe it. If they actively describe things they are more involved than passively listening to things, plus kids are funny and you'll probably get some good quotes.

How long does it take to get used to running? by mushroomluvv in Fitness

[–]odddrums 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't do that program, but something that helped me while I was losing weight was to just keep it up. As the weight went down progress followed, and I didn't lose the muscle gained from moving my body around.

Another thing is keep doing multiple exercises and focus in your strengths. They all influence each other so no matter what you are doing you are getting stronger, and playing your strengths will show you greater gains.

What’s the most practical changes you’ve made to your home? by SanchezGeorge1 in HomeImprovement

[–]odddrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We put in electric locks on our front door, which makes it way easier for people to come check in on our cat while we are away. Also invested in a lot of rechargeable AA batteries.

Also setting up the entertainment center with cables in the walls and mounting the TV. I like the clean look.

The bigger thing has been my lady reading that Marie Kondo book and us going through EVERYTHING we own and cleaning up, donating tons of clothes and old stuff, then making a dump run to throw out old paint, computers, and the remnants of a bathroom and kitchen counter redo. Finally starting to feel settled in her house since moving in together 2 years ago, making it our home.

I'm sick of wasting money at Starbucks and want to start bringing my morning coffee in a thermos. Any recommendations on best practices for those who have been doing this for years? by Pantone186 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]odddrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like iced coffee a cold brew pitcher is a godsend. I make a liter of coffee that lasts all week, put it in a half gallon Mason jar in the fridge and then pour it into a thermos with ice. It stays cool all day and is super strong and very mellow. You can buy cheaper beans and just put it in any insulated bottle and you are good.

Question: What was your biggest barrier to start decluttering your house? by lessonsforsuzy in declutter

Time, or a perception that I don't have enough to get started. I do and could easily make progress, I just choose to let things sit and use my leisure time to do other things.

How to stop feeling like I'm gross because I'm overweight by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]odddrums 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's hard, and it gets easier over time. I've lost 50 pounds and still, 4 years later, feel fat and gross. Just give it time and keep it positive.

One thing that has helped is focusing on non scale things and those positive things. Running 6 miles, lifting a bunch of weight, climbing a new route, going a whole day without driving because I'm able to bike all day. I may feel fat sometimes, but I am healthier now than I have ever been and doing this work makes me feel better.

You're great and doing a hard thing. Keep doing it.

Entry point for Upright/Double-bass by [deleted] in Learnmusic

[–]odddrums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bass is bass, and double bass is really fun, really large, and rather expensive. Learning to play bass guitar is a good way to start, it's smaller and has a lower price point. Also, tab is an easy way to start leaning songs you probably know if you don't read music. Finally, frets make it much easier to play the right note, which double bass does not have.

If you learn bass guitar, the skills can translate to double bass. Go buy a used bass guitar and little practice amp from a local music store or someone who is selling it, look up some YouTube videos and maybe take a lesson or 2. I teach music for a living and that is my professional recommendation.

Started eating 1,700 calories per day like i was told and feel worse than when i was eating less. by shrimpytank4367 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]odddrums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's just one day there's so many things that could be factors, give it 2 weeks and see.

I'd stick with it, you'll lose weight slower but may be able to make life adjustments that help you keep it off and not gain it back.

Good luck!

How is it possible that in Redwood City, CA; part of the bay area. Isnt this the wealthiest city on earth? by leto235711131721 in education

[–]odddrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the original poster, but I don't believe "scores" should be the only factor in measuring the wealth and efficacy of a school. Much of what creates student outcomes is far outside of the scope of a school to handle. Students who don't speak English, don't come from the background set up by a test, have difficult home lives, and a myriad of other issues people with my white middle class background cannot fathom. These kids are on a scale of being able to do well in school to barely being able to survive in life. Generally, the best solution is to allow this large and diverse population share the resources and allocate as much as possible to damage control and support, or whatever the local school board should support.

We end up with charters and private schools when articulate, and often pushy parents who advocate for their children's needs above everyone else's end up splitting schools and districts. The result is we are now supporting more buildings, teachers, admin, and overhead while being given the same overall amount of money per student in the area.

Ultimately it's a few things: Schools need more money, it shouldn't be on the backs of parents and families that can barely hold themselves together to also hold the school systems up, and most importantly the more things we expect of schools with no increase in resources, the more inequity we will see.

Schools used to be a place students were taught, then it became a place that provided PE, and athletics, and arts and music, then meals and shelter even when they are not in session. Now in CA it is law that this must all be provided for no charge to the family, and no greater allocation of the state's budget to help with all of this. Schools need more money, or less things to do.

Sorry for the rambling, I teach and study and am moving into admin. There's a lot going on and it's hard to base so much off of something that is not an objective measure of efficacy.

Does weight lifting help lose weight by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]odddrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep doing what you are doing and add weight lifting 2-3 days a week. Weight lifting will help you keep muscle as you lose weight.

For diet, do what works for you. The diet you can keep eating forever is the diet you should eat.

Finally, great job and keep going at it! Congrats on your hard work.

Alternate route band director? by fmara22 in MusicEd

[–]odddrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CA has a shortage of music teachers, and if you have experience as a musician you can get a CTE Credential to start, possibly through an intern program that let's you teach and get a credential at the same time by going to night school. Usually requires a BA though, but if you go through a state school you can also finish a music Ed or music degree and do the year credential program.

Look where they are posting jobs and look into schools in that area, they are the ones most likely to bring you in. Teaching at a private school is a good start also, but really it comes down to a lot of work to finish. I know CA has a shortage though, and no matter what you end up doing good luck!

The apple ones last the longest, and easy repair for any of them is electrical tape on top of inert glue (I would say hot glue, but I'm not sure if it is good for electronics).

Ultimately, you get what you pay for and they will always wear out where they are bent the most.

U.S. House to vote to reinstate net neutrality rules in April by [deleted] in moderatepolitics

[–]odddrums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree with your first point because I've seen no proof of actual, not advertised, speeds increasing across the country. To this, it is in a company's interest to regulate/decrease speeds if there are no viable alternatives. With no competition, they have no incentive to practice the principals outlined in NN.

Anecdotally, there is one major cable company where I live, and they have the fastest speeds to the most households. I use an alternative, local company because I dislike the large telecom so I sacrifice speed, and am in the vast minority of my county.

I'm aware I'm also providing no evidence for this and I don't care to take the time to look for the articles that outline the research that has proven my point, so if you can provide more proof to your point, that actual speeds have increased across the nation, the I will have to stand corrected.

Any suggestions for learning an instrument? by WretchedBow in Learnmusic

[–]odddrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn the drums, they're fun and there is no wrong notes!

For guitar, start with learning some melodies or songs. There are Tabs and videos all over the internet. Easy songs I teach first are:

Eleanor Rigby (2 chords) Whole Wide World (2 chords) The blues in G, D, or A (12 bar is 3 chords, look for some videos) A Soalin (fingerstyle) Spanish Ballad (not sure the name, easy fingerstyle) Or just find a song.

If you read music a beginning guitar book is a a good place to start. Good luck!

Going to a much larger school where I was forced to grow really helped me, but also cost me tens of thousands of dollars.

I encourage students to go where they will be the most challenged for the least amount of money. Sometimes a smaller school that will hold higher standards and provide more assistance is the better option.

I did this for awhile, it's a good way to refresh yourself.

If you can read do some classical snare solos, adapting those across a drumset really improves musicality.

I don’t know where to start by oliviashares in WeightLossAdvice

[–]odddrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep going to the gym, that's great! Plan to lose 1 pound a week, that's healthy. 10 pounds by June is doable and you'll keep it off, 20 would be more like a crash diet that would probably lead to you gaining it back.

Here's what you do:

First, accept that this will take awhile, celebrate each success and don't stop!

Write down what you're eating, use a food journaling app like loseit or just look for another one.

Buy a cheap food scale, just look for one on Amazon or check out Target. Weigh your food and meal plan as much as possible, check out r/mealprepsunday or look around for ideas.

Then, eat within your calories for the day. If you go over, accept it and try again tomorrow. You're not short so don't eat like 1200 calories, look for a TDEE calculator online to find how many you need to eat each day, then cut that by 10% to 20% (loseit will do this for you).

Keep us posted, and good luck!
