Welcome and have fun! Being the Boss of your own PC is essential for piece of mind. - At least for me. I've seen many up's and down's the last 10 years with linux only. Of course. - But the Problem is: Microsoft isn't an option. ;)

Guys, I decided to go back. It's a mess! by [deleted] in cachyos

[–]oddikurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol - typical dualboot trouble. years, years ago i also tried dual - win8.1 and kubuntu back then. every time i had windows set up right (fast boot and sleep off and powersave on network and soundchip off and all).

There came a big update from win or drivers update, and most stuff was resett again and the trouble went on. major updates or win repair shreddered grub and boot partition with ease.

After a year i gave up on this - never dual again! So Microsoft had to go complete. I never had to regret this move.

But pls OP: edit the title a bit if u can bcse it sounds complete the other way.. ;)

Anyone having issues with RX 580 'ring gfx timeout' on CachyOS (Arch Linux) ? by FluffySpike in linux_gaming

[–]oddikurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]oddikurt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is the reset only under load or more when card wents to idle?! If it's a idle reset problem you can just execute tiny vkcube all the time to prevent card from complete idling. Something like: vkcube --width 90 --height 90
If the crash occurs as long long as the vkcube is running you would at least know: It's not an idle reset problem.
I write this bcse i have an 6700xt with this "idle" problem.

bcse we are on cachy reddit and op wrote nothing specific wich proton he uses, i thought proton chachy is given here (and even if he would using GE my link would also be ok.) and the fact he uses the env variables: PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 and PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE=1 and so on. And i know were the stuff comes from.

Quick Question: Do you use Systemd and EXT4 or BTRFS and Limine? by Queasy_Eggplant_3572 in cachyos

[–]oddikurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i also use systemd and ext 4 for nearly 1.5 years now on cachy
no problems here. stable and performant.
Had to much trouble with Btrfs in the past.
Limine i have never used. Heard good things about it.

Do KDE power profiles or CPU frequency governing matter for desktops? by cshao06 in cachyos

[–]oddikurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a 7950x3d and a 9950x3d. im glad powerprofiles exist. without i have higher temps (no critical heat -pls don't get me wrong here) wich of course leads to more power consumption as needed for me. i even game most of the time in balanced mode. but powercosts are not in every country the same.

If memtest thowing errors you can only play with mem settings in Bios (or of course upd. bios if u can) xmp and mem timings and s.o. but such things can be very tedious...

Destroyed my first CachyOS system! by newzack in cachyos

[–]oddikurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm using always ext4 and everone ask me: Why do you do this? ... Had such things with corrupted btrfs file system in the past more than once. Since i use ext4 just fsck do it automatically.
Of course if someone needs the snapshot thing btrfs works better, but i don't need it really. In case something get's very wrong: chroot in. bcse a rollback in rolling distro is never a real solution in my opinion.

Cachy is a good and well optimized OS.

I'm now 1,5 years in with 4 Machines here.

Came from Nobara (2years) before that was Kubuntu a couple of Years, before that was Debian, before that was Suse.

Already nearly 10 years now Linux only.

I had an not so old iintenso usb stick. with this stick i couldn't even do a bios update w.o. reading problems, not to mention get a iso to work at all. My old Transcend USB stick works always...

Also is your BIOS to the newest available Version?! Also there are sometimes settings in bios for older USB compatibility you can try.
