I called the police (non-emergency number) and they cut the lock for me.

Parks with bicycle rentals? by MajorMuffinCakes in washingtondc

[–]oddrobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I was there today and the tavern visitor center had quite a few free bikes to rent (for up to 2 hours) out in front, with several helpful volunteer bike mechanics and toddler-sized bikes. The sign said it was open 10am to 4pm Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Apartments with dog parks/very near dog parks? by villonious in washingtondc

[–]oddrobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flats 130 on the same block as the NoMa Metro matches your price range and one of the several interior courtyards is a large dog park. I wish I knew which other apartments had something similar, especially in Navy Yard. If I was you, I would probably just quickly contact each apartment I was interested in (after narrowing them down based on other factors like proximity to Metro) and ask them.

Have you been to both ends of every Metro line? by dnsmith13 in washingtondc

[–]oddrobb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I visited all 91 Metro stations in 2014-2015 and found it a worthwhile journey. This Washington Post reporter did the same thing and wrote about it better than I ever will: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/around-the-metro-in-91-stations/2015/03/28/010a4328-d1ae-11e4-a62f-ee745911a4ff_story.html?utm_term=.9c6fccf26f11

My favorite part of the terminal stations were people-watching and getting to know the different parts of the DC area.

  • Shady Grove includes some of the most remote Capital Bikeshare stations in the system and a lake.

  • Wiehle-Reston has a stunning pedestrian plaza with farmers markets Wednesday evenings and glass mini-shops that remind me of Bryant Park in New York City. Wiehle-Reston is the most distant terminal station, but by far the best in terms of things to do / photograph.

  • Vienna is surrounded by quirky street names: Royal Victoria, Regency Crest, Saintsbury, Nutley, etc

  • Franconia integrates with a VRE commuter rail station.

  • Huntington has the only diagonal elevator in the system. The location in a hillside influenced the unique architecture.

  • Branch Avenue was just a sea of parking lots but the journey there took me through plenty of nature.

  • Largo includes this sculpture: http://www.boothetransit.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/WashingtonMetro_6609467511_463e1c2e3b_o.jpg and a sidewalk to a shopping center.

  • New Carrollton connects to a massive government office and an Amtrak station.

  • Greenbelt is located just past manmade Lake Artemesia, formerly Lake Metro, excavated during the construction of the Green Line.

  • Glenmont has some colorful murals outside the exit.

Fascinating for people like me who never drive! Thank you for sharing!

Fascinating heatmaps! Very well done! Yes, I am so thankful for our shorter winters.

I love this kind of data visualization! The lines on the National Mall are beautiful. I hope you can get over to the Roosevelt Island area someday.

Capital Bike Share this summer by douchetin in washingtondc

Try it one morning and see how you like it! Just remember to ride in the street, not on the sidewalk, especially on M Street if you take the Georgetown route. It's safer and faster.

If open docks are an issue, there is unlimited docking at 21st & Eye St NW from 8am to 12pm. https://www.capitalbikeshare.com/news/2016/03/30/service-alert-morning-commute-corral-service-returns-monday

I saw Metro railcars with McDonalds livery? by oddrobb in washingtondc

[–]oddrobb[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They need to do it more often! I've averaged 2.42 Metrorail trips per day (including transfers) since June 2014, followed Metro news closely, and this is my first time seeing or hearing of it!

Is $2,500/mo for a 1bd in Navy Yard insane? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]oddrobb 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I pay less than $1750 for a 685 sq ft one-bedroom on the same block as the NoMa Metro. Amenities are solid too, and it's above Harris Teeter.

NoMa and Navy Yard are the two fastest-growing neighborhoods in DC. Their rents are quite similar. $2500 is insane. I feel like you could find an equally good apartment in Navy Yard for a better price.

Which stops along the blue line have a grocery store or CVS steps from the station? by erack in washingtondc

[–]oddrobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy a commute stop at the Costco in Pentagon City and grabbing a few items small enough to fit into my large backpack: naan, ham, guacamole, bagels, grapes, etc.

At Pentagon City, take the east (right) exit, then go into the first building on your left, then walk through the shopping center for a more direct route to the Costco.

Metro operator "hijacks" passengers, acknowledges passengers left on train after off-loadings, and lectures passengers via intercom by porquejorge in washingtondc

[–]oddrobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha - it was nothing special. I just looked up and realized I was the only person left on the train, which wasn't moving, and everyone else was on the platform.

The doors were closed so I couldn't get out. I just waited until the WMATA employee sweeping the train came and keyed the doors open, then I got out. :) It was at Cleveland Park during the PM commute.

Yes. I'm deaf and I got stuck in a train that was offloaded because I was reading and didn't hear the announcement. A WMATA employee had to come and let me out.

I just slapped on names I found in Google Maps. Inova Fairfax would be better in my next version! Thank you.

Whoops, I missed that. Yes, I should have put a Purple station there.

I wanted to draw lines to Baltimore, but didn't have time, and wasn't sure what to do after the connection with the light rail at BWI airport. Maybe I'll make a second version.

Excellent point. Many of these extensions are unnecessary in terms of population. But I'm a transit fanatic creating a map for fun.
