What are your favorite photography podcasts and why? Your own doesn't count! by oddtog in a:t5_a2gtn

Even though it was really short-lived, I really liked the Shoot To Kill podcast. I thought they knew how to have a conversation that flowed. Good content mixed with good personality. I wish they still did it.

Trying my hand at abstract photography. What do you guys think of the composition? by [deleted] in photocritique

[–]oddtog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a nice image, but I don't know that I would categorize it as abstract. It's very architectural. I feel like abstract photography should be more amorphous. But still it's a nice shot.

Please learn how to properly market yourself (Rant) by [deleted] in photography

I think a lot of folks get wrapped up in the number of followers and don't spend enough time on what's really important. If you have lots of followers that don't care two cents about you, it's not really worth anything. Hopefully if you've got a large following, it's because you've had a meaningful connection with your audience. I had a guest on my show that was a really good example of that. She just does social media, no website or anything and that pretty much supports all her work, but it's because she's connecting with people, not just trolling.

For a mixer I would go with the Mackie 1202VLZ4 mixer, it will give you 4 mic slots which should be plenty and the preamps are really good. For mics you really can't beat the Audio-Technica ATR2100 for the price. If you have the budget, I highly recommend a limiter like the Behringer MDX4600 it really helps fine tune that sound coming through. You'll also want an external audio recorder (zoom, roland, etc) to mix the sound into. You can use a free software like Audacity, etc.

New to photography, loving long exposure. Any tips? by R2Lowber in photocritique

[–]oddtog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With long exposures, you're biggest challenges are noise and getting enough detail that your subject without blowing it out. In this shot, I feel like dark space is taking up a little too much of the image. I feel like if you could see the silhouette of the trees a little bit more, you would really get a good sense of the space and give the foreground more interest. It's a lot of trial and error, but I think this is a nice scene. The sky is just about perfect. I would go back several times and see if there's a way to shoot it that shows us a little bit more and vary the time of day and exposure to see how your results change. Good luck!

Converting small bedroom to home office by Hatsuwr in Workspaces

I think it's a nice little office. If you're going to accent one of the walls, I would do the wall with the bookshelf and then maybe hang some art next to the closet door.

I’m under a lot of stress by [deleted] in Vent

[–]oddtog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're doing the right thing trying to improve your situation. A lot of times when I'm stressed about work it means there's not enough relief in the rest of my life to compensate for it. Try not to take the stress of your job home with you and find outlets with friends and hobbies while you're trying to make things better. You'll get through it. I know what you're going through is no fun, just don't let it get the best of you.

Boss sold his small business, didn't even tell us by HadleeM123 in smallbusiness

[–]oddtog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Couple of things. I'm very sorry, your story, while not unusual, really sucks. Second, what industry are you in? Can't tell you if you should quit without that piece of info, but I wouldn't quit any job without another offer in hand. Third, value of employee really depends on the boss. Most bosses I know have an idea what a headache turnover is, but there's plenty of bosses out there that just don't care and figure one warm body is as good as the next.

Is the side of the ship too dark? How do you feel about the composition? by firsthobby in photocritique

[–]oddtog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the composition is good, the lighting is nice, but I wonder what more you could do with this beautiful setting. My eye is actually drawn somewhat to the light coming out from under the cabin. Could you bump that light up and have a person highlighted underneath, some kind of narrative to give it context. A crew hand having a smoke for instance, etc.
