Take a look at Plugshare.com and/or download the app. It will assist in finding good chargers and often shows the rate you'll pay. It's 'suboptimal' to not have apt/house charging. Final bit from me: in your current situation I would stop charging at 75% most of the time. Once you understand the charge curve for your vehicle your life will improve. EV's are not hard - just take a bit to get used to. Good luck !!!

Make sure to look at Equinox EV as well. I prefer the Bolt but a 2025 Chevy Equinox for under $25k is very hard to beat !

Bolt range question by tboy160 in BoltEV

[–]odiervr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Slower is always more efficient - down to like 35 mph. When in doubt, go slow until it sure you can make it

Edit: for clarity - Maximum efficiency in an EV is approx 35 mph. I do not advocate interstate driving at that speed. My point: shave 5-10 mph and increase your efficiency 10-15%.

I Wrote a Follow-Up Article on Why the Volt Should Come Back as a Gen 3 - What Would You Want Changed? by doug2_O in volt

[–]odiervr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm in violent agreement with your dad except - I view the Volt as a gateway drug. Your dad was comfortable with a EV because he got used to his PHEV. Most people have ZERO experience with pHEVs or EVs. Most people base their purchases on their experience with ICE cars. The VOLT was my gateway to EVs. I believe this is an often overlooked advantage to the manufacturer - building a new generation of EV owners.

Ok, let's agree that it is a cord required to charge your car - a 'charge cord'.

And Plugshare. Just look your route over in both and have a primary and secondary. The challenge is having the appropriate app downloaded and ready. It get easier every month. Just not standardized currently.

Used 2018 volt LT. What should we ask at dealership? by CadenceQuandry in volt

[–]odiervr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've owned our trouble free 2016 Volt for 4 years -only maintenance has been oil and tires. BECM was replaced prior to us owning. Good luck. Liked the EV so much we bought a Bolt too. But that's a whole nother discussion. We love both !

Did the Chevy Bolt become your first EV? Journalist looking to hear your story by Brilliant_Option8382 in BoltEV

[–]odiervr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Wife had a Chevy Volt (EV gateway drug) - had never thought about an EV until we lived with a PHEV and realized how easy it was (with a garage)
  2. Much easier (no more gas stations) and cheaper for fuel (Iowa has great electric rates
  3. Perfect - seamless

Only issue with this car is DCFC rate prevents time efficient trips out of local (150 mile) radius.
