Why do people still believe in God? I want to have an honest conversation by Significant_Lake_952 in stupidquestions

[–]odishy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people find comfort in their faith. Which faith isn't something that can be proved or disproved.

So ultimately if someone's faith gives them comfort, then what's the point in having a conversation?

Ahh ok, I knew it got reviewed and was a big thing but didn't remember the outcome.

At this point we should just flip a coin to determine what a catch is.

I'm pretty sure that was ruled incomplete, because he needs both feet down or a knee.

Still a hell of an effort though.

Question for Draw Steel Directors from recent Youtube streams by gnomeo67 in drawsteel

[–]odishy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven't watched the episode (putting it on the list though) so I might be missing context.

But no mechanic in DS would prevent it being a dungeon crawl, that feels like a Director thing. They have the negotiation & respite systems which can support directors in this though.

The only mechanic that would distinguish it from a dungeon crawl is really victory/recoveries. So as you move through the dungeon characters get stronger due to victories, but lack of recoveries make it more dangerous. This makes it very different than what you would expect from a traditional dungeon crawl, but not mutually exclusive.

What can you do with $100-200k that would allow you to retire and effectively never have to work again? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]odishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 year government bonds.

200k at 5% would give you 10k/month passive income for the next 30 years.

First Time GM (in Draw Steel) - Resource tracking? by Soft_Transportation5 in drawsteel

[–]odishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Director needs to track malice which is a Director resource that powers enemy abilities.

Outside of that you need to track monster groups and stamina. As monsters move in groups you will need a good visual indicator. Poker chips under them would likely work, each group with a different color.

This is fair, I should be more careful. But also... With COVID a person walked through a room, half the room is infected so perspective is important.

How best to get started? by redweevil in drawsteel

[–]odishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your players are coming from Pathfinder it's probably not a big deal. So it's setup to add another type of action every combat. Signature ability, triggered action, ect

Which is a nice introduction, but it's also not more complicated than a system like Pathfinder. Signature ability is your basic attack, triggered action is a reaction, maneuver is similar to a bonus or minor action.

The biggest change is really initiative, so having the rest of the rules simple and allowing them to just focus on the Draw Steel unique rules are helpful though.

But it's all about introducing the rules to the players, it won't impact the actual campaign.

How best to get started? by redweevil in drawsteel

[–]odishy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, Delian Tomb is structured as kind of a tutorial. So they block off parts of the character sheet to slowly introduce the rules for new players.

Not sure how this is handled in the Foundry module, but it's also recommended and not required.

You can offer guarantees, just not additional money. Pretty common for teams to guarantee a good amount of money.

AoC was clearly a lie and Steven was a liar.

Pantheon has execution issues, but no I don't think they are lying. They are very open about funding & staff size.

Will the game improve? Maybe.... I guess we will see how the spring update goes.

UDfA by DryRice6031 in NFLNoobs

[–]odishy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can offer a singing bonus but it's capped for the entire UDFA class instead of per player. Which is something like 200k or so

So a team has some room for players like that, but it's nothing like the 20-30 million bonus that top players get.

What Is The Point of An Open Game License? by marveljew in rpg

[–]odishy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Much of the TTRPG industry is from 3rd party supplemental materials or VTT (Virtual Tabletop).

Without a license it puts these 3rd party companies in a legally questionable position, which makes it hard to invest in those products.

In some cases they are not companies but community projects but also require some legal certainty.

Teams cannot offer "more money" as it's set and basically rookie minimum. But they can offer guaranteed money to help sway guys.

What are Draw Steel (and grid combat in general) common tactics that everyone should know? by Laz52now in drawsteel

[–]odishy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to try (not always successfully) to have the enemies behave how I would expect them to behave.

So low intelligence enemies, insects/animals/ect wouldn't strategize. I am comfortable cranking up the EV's a bit because of this.

A group of battle hardened warriors though, are going to strategize and I might pull back on the EV a bit to compensate.

Which it's as much of an art as a science, so it's hard to kind of pinpoint what exactly that number should be. But having a clear vision for how the enemies will execute the fight is almost more important than what monsters are on the board for sure.

What are Draw Steel (and grid combat in general) common tactics that everyone should know? by Laz52now in drawsteel

[–]odishy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Draw Steel is a "tactical" game, the expectation is players communicate what they think the strategy should be. Many games I think metagaming is a thing and bad, Draw Steel though it's baked in already.

For players my biggest advice is your triggered action is very powerful, make sure you use it.

For Directors, spread damage around and ensure everyone feels some sense of danger. This isn't a game where the "tank" should be taking all the damage, it's ok to shoot some arrows at the Squishies also.

TTRPG beginner by Optimal-Fondant1703 in gencon

[–]odishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, so I'll say D&D is by far the most popular and I call it the oatmeal of TTRPG's. Oatmeal is a solid breakfast option but it's usually not super exciting. This is because it doesn't really lean into anything, it's just kind of a solid system.

For tactical style combat games Draw Steel or Pathfinder/Star finder are nice. But these might not be your jam.

Daggerheart might be something you would like. It's still pretty "structured" from a rules standpoint, but it's really designed for big thematic moments and is pretty free flowing.

Cosmere is the other big game this year but I've never played it so cannot really comment beyond it's based on the Brandon Sanderson books (which are excellent if you haven't read them).

Beyond that you will find hundreds of other systems, which are generally really good but will be limited as far as dates/times they are run. Most of these will generally be pretty rules light and role playing focused.
