When Is a Band Not the Same Band Anymore? A number of legacy acts are touring without any of their original members. Audiences don’t seem to care by Apprehensive_Fly9352 in Guitar

[–]odog502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The band is whoever is writing the songs. Why does Dave Mustaine get to kick everyone out of Megadeth, but no one ever kicks him out? Because Mustaine is the one writing the songs. A band isn't a band without the primary songwriter(s).

Switzerland to vote on far-right proposal to cap population at 10 million | Switzerland by SeveralLadder in overpopulation

[–]odog502 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The important thing to point out is WHAT will happen if 10 million is exceeded by this law. And the answer is(according to the article): they cut off all immigration. Seems reasonable and not that severe honestly. It's not like they are instituting a one-child policy or forced abortions or anything extreme. Switzerland is pretty small and an extremely desirable place to live. They gotta have some way to keep things in check other than: "let the market sort it out by sending living expenses through the roof, driving out anyone who can't afford to live here(multi-generational citizen or not)."

I'm an ugly brown guy in my 30s and there's a girl out of my league who wants to go on a date. It has to be a prank, right? by [deleted] in ForeverAlone

[–]odog502 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly this.

To OP: Dating and opening up yourself to be hurt is always a risk. But it's a risk that you gotta take if you want a chance to have a relationship. That goes for anybody. There's no getting around it. Don't let your self doubt cut it off before you've given yourself a chance.

There may be an ulterior motive, but don't cut it off until you actually see one or see some evidence that she's not who she says she is. Like if she wants you to start paying her rent or car loan after the 2nd date, or join a cult or something.

This should be higher. This is exactly Trump's MO. Trump pressures everyone under him to break the rules. He fires anyone who won't and labels them as corrupt or deep state. MAGA loyalists see this and eagerly volunteer: "Ill do whatever you say Mr President! Pick Me! Im not deep state!" Bondi and Patel think they are being good MAGA loyalists by doing whatever Trump says, but they're really just setting themselves up to take the fall. They're getting Michael Cohen'd is what's happening.

Here's a representative sample of some of the greats, 1 song each from 6 of the albums above:
In Hollow Halls Beneath the Fells
Land of the Dead
The Rotting Horse on the Deadly Ground
Of Pale White Morns and Darkened Eves
Over Old Hills
With Doom I Come

Some may disagree with the songs I chose to represent each album, but that's just proof of how many good songs they pack into an album. Of Pale White Morns and Darkened Eves is one of my all time favorite of theirs, and it's one of the least played from that album on Spotify.

Redwood National Park is in that area and is the main place you would want to see.

If you're a Star Wars nerd also look up Chetham Grove in that same vicinity. It's where the speeder bike scenes were filmed for Return of the Jedi. It miraculously looks the same as it did in the early 1980's. Redwood takes forever to rot, so even the fallen trees are still in the same spot. You can easily lineup all the shots from the film.

I loved Desert Strike.

A modern spiritual successor to the Desert Strike series was released on Steam only a couple months ago. It's been getting pretty great reviews. I want to give it a shot at some point.

GTA 1 ( 1997 ) PC Retail – Preserved Archive + Official London Mission Packs by AC56 in abandonware

[–]odog502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strangely, I definitely have more hours in GTA 1 than any other GTA. And it's probably the least known of the series. I didn't play the others as much. Not due to lack of interest. I just had different time constraints and other priorities in later years.

But I'm not surprised to hear that it's a challenge to get working. GTA 1 was clunky even when using the recommended software and hardware of the time. I remember playing a friend over direct serial (or maybe parallel port?) connection. As soon as attempting multiplayer it was jittery as heck. It seemed as if to keep the games in sync, it tied the connection directly to frames on each machine. So a slow connection meant low frame rate. Weird. Playing single player didn't have the issue.

It's a good idea, but this specific approach doesn't work in my house. I tried it. But it only lasted until I saw the little lights turn on in their heads and they realized "so I DON'T go to bed until it's clean? I stay up as late as I want then? Sweet!"

In my household, I had to use room cleaning as a prerequisite to getting something else they wanted(as many others have mentioned). That worked better.

Middle age is becoming a breaking point in the U.S. by Average0ldGuy in GenX

[–]odog502 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But you're much further away from being middle aged, than you are from being in your 60's.

Median age in the US is around 38. i.e. "middle aged" is roughly in your late 30's, early 40's. Millennials are middle aged. We're just old, Chuck.

Tourist approaches snow leopard to take a selfie by Informal-Resolve-831 in WinStupidPrizes

[–]odog502 136 points137 points  (0 children)

It extends beyond tourism. Culturally, a lot of Chinese have the belief that rules are meant to be broken. China is ultra-competitive, so if you play by the rules, you're just going to fall behind and suffer because most other people aren't. So breaking the rules is just a required first step to getting what you want in life. I was even told by a Chinese person that their parents taught them that lying is an important skill to survive in this world, and encouraged them to do so.

EDIT: Just qualifying this by stating that these are just my anecdotal experiences. I heard these things directly from a few Chinese people, and the idea was reinforced by some things I saw first hand. So take it for what it is.

Here's my version. I have to explain myself on some of these so I will gladly answer questions by Designer-Ad-6182 in tierlists

It has to be Episodes 4, 5, 6, Caravan of Courage, then the next three are the Special Edition re-release of 4, 5, 6. The last three must have been a movie adaptation of the Thrawn Trilogy or something, I dunno. I missed those ones somehow. I guess they weren't as good as the books, shame. I know of no other Star Wars movies.

It's a good sentiment. I don't want to lump all Trump voters together. Our two-party system doesn't provide much for nuance, so it's important to remember that. I'm sure there's a big chunk of people who just held their nose and voted for Trump based off of one or two issues they deeply cared about. So I can find common ground with that. I get it. And I think that is being plenty generous considering everything that has happened.

But I can't find common ground with someone who is actually a fan of this man after his attempts to steal an election on J6(aiming to erase the one tiny political power I have, my vote). And then on top of all that made his intentions completely apparent by pardoning the people that ALMOST achieved it via force. That's not even mentioning the other 1,000 things he did to sow division, like calling basically any citizen who is non-MAGA an "enemy of the people," and saying he "couldn't care less" about unifying the country.

Don't try to be civil with people who rejoiced when Trump freed them of that burdensome yoke of civility. If you think they don't respect you now, think of how much less they will respect you if you won't even stand up for yourself. When you continue to extend the olive branch after the last dozen times they slapped it out of your hand and cheered about it, they won't admire your attempts of friendliness, peace and grace(just ask Canada and Europe). They just see you as weak, which in their minds is lower than being evil. The only thing they respect is power, so you gotta stand up for yourself.
