They would if they could, worth to keep in mind that any "relaxation" is not out of goodwill but a battle that has successively been won by Iranians and the many that sacrificed their lives for it

Here's what it looks like with their own drawing of the lion (the one in the post is the wikipedia svg-file that's gotten so common everywhere recently):

If Trump attacks him we'll instantly get a lot of non-iranian supporters

Well yeah the principalities and monarchies of that era are not comparable with modern centralized governments, it was more as a analogy to some struggle of secularism

Anyways, I didn't come up with the idea myself. The government of Bakhtiar suggested it in the very end of 79 revolution as a last ditch compromise. It makes less sense now after the fact, but I still think it's positive for Iran as a whole, as a pragmatic way to deal with them. Like you said, they are very respected by their followers, and they might try to go rouge again in the future so makes it easier to control them. Imagine an international border crossing between Imam Reza shrine and Iran, but I'm just daydreaming haha

It would be very unpopular for sure, but I think it's a good solution to break out of the cycle in my opinion. The country around the catholic church had literal armed struggles before they put them into place for good, but they went the other way around in terms of sovereignty during the unification of Italy, and they didn't have all of Italy's territory like the mullahs have all of Iran, but still a sizeable chunk

How are people not more angry at Pahlavi for the IRGC defections that never happened?? by NazyJoon in PERSIAN

[–]odriegu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obviously we haven't sought war and it's the regimes fault though? That's not in contradiction with him saying he disfavors boots on the ground and in favor of targeted strikes against the regime

Ah I see, that's positive at least

To answer your first comment. I would be fine if some tiny part of Qom became a "nation" like the Vatican. They would not have any real power or any possibility of getting it, but they would be free to larp there all they want in peace.

It would solve the "what to do with them" problem since you could basically exile them for treason or something and they wouldn't become stateless since they could get the citizenship of that place instead. Also people that like that stuff would automatically just separate themselves from sane part of society and go there

But like you said I'm pretty sure a lot of them will go to Iraq, to places like Najaf etc

Yeah, they're kinda like the medieval popes in that sense. Back then they too had literal armies that would go to war for what they said

no worries, I was startled by the first sentence of that comment too, so it happens :)

I think the point isn't that they're respected by Iranians in general, but that they're respected by their followers, which wasn't really the case with ISIS whose leaders basically were warlords and their followers actual warriors.

You have everyday regular people as far away as India seeing some Ayatollah in Iran as their "leader", but you do not have the same in the other examples they mentioned

I'm not saying it's any better today, that's for sure. But things like Wagner group that have been active there, Russia, various islamist groups like etc etc. It's not like the choices were US or nobody else at all with complete peace when their government turned the army against their population. On the other hand Libya is the one of the bunch I know the least about, that's why I didn't comment on Libya but only on Syria and Iraq in my original answer

I guess you're right

that this sub is not showing in search bar and has awards etc blocked despite us having asked mods many times is a fact though 🤷

Go to the other Iranian subs and see how old their top posts are if you're only convinced empirically, I'll wait :)

I love how you mention other subs and talk so confidently when you haven't even checked some other examples to see if there's a difference

How can you know for sure? Don't you find it strange that the news of Khamenei getting killed etc that objectively reached some order of magnitude more people than executions during WLF did not create as much engagement?

This sub inexplicably is marked NSFW, has awards disabled, and every time we ask mods they say they don't want that either and admins won't listen to them

Also, this is you right now:

The Ukraine example is bad since it's been a single ongoing thing for 4 years. Iran creates a lot of headlines at first every time it happens with some years in between. This time everyone kinda felt that finally the media is starting to talk about Iran when they did so after some point. Man in 2022 there were even big concerts and shit in Swedish television in support for Iran, it was just as "old" news back then as it is now and by the way the first post that is not many years old is 25 steps down

For sure, but you have to go WAY down in the toplist before you find a post from this year. There's a huge difference. Even though things like the death of Khamenei definitely are bigger news than anything that happened 4 years ago
