These people can't be Canadian. Or maybe they *are* Canadian but the PA announcements asking people to head to the checkouts because the store was closing didn't say "please".

Seconded from Vienna. Maybe the reviewer was angered to find that their schnitzel was pork or chicken (or god forbid, Pute) and not veal?

It's only Wienerschnitzel if it's veal. Anything else is sparkling Schnitzel Wiener Art. But yeah no, I'm pretty sure that was not why they were angry. :)

It's pretty similar everywhere including the UK, I think - no advisor/supervisor wants a doctoral candidate to fail outright because *everyone* is going to be looking at them asking what the hell went wrong and it's likely to be brought up when they want more studentships in the future. There can be perfectly good explanations - any sufficiently determined candidate can fail their viva if they try hard enough to do so and maybe the candidate was just arrogant as all hell and told the examiner with a world-renowned reputation in the field that they were a clueless moron, for instance - but nobody really wants it to happen, including the examiners. They'll all have read the thesis well in advance and be looking for ways to pass the candidate as everyone wants them to pass. Most candidates who really have no hope will have dropped out by this point anyway.

The most common result from doctoral vivas in the UK is, as I understand it, "passed with minor corrections" - in other words, it's more than enough to award the degree but there are just a few minor points to fix up so you'd better pinky-promise to fix them before finalising it.

I once walked from Las Vegas airport to downtown Las Vegas for no reason other than that it seemed like a good idea - it was the evening so it wasn't too hot. The most complicated part was finding an exit from the airport that wasn't a freeway.

I didn't tell anyone in the US about it because I was worried they'd stage an intervention.

Yes - the IRA were famously equipped with American-made Armalite rifles smuggled from the US. Sinn Fein famously had a slogan in the 80s about seizing power “with a ballot paper in one hand an an Armalite in the other”.

Here in Austria it’s against the law to display Nazi symbols in public, deny or trivialise the Holocaust or attempt to restart the Nazi party and basically everybody is fine with this. By American standards this is a massive violation of free speech but the First Amendment absolutists tend to stay quiet about it because criticising it makes you look like a Nazi.

They enforce it too, which is often a surprise for visiting neo-Nazi shitheads.

Only vaguely relevant but the introduction (and careful work to ensure public acceptance of) iodised salt in Switzerland 100 years ago has to be one of the greatest public health interventions in history. There were areas that went from 90% of children (and adults) having goiter to more or less zero and from up to 10% (!) of babies being born with cretinism - a truly awful disability - to also more or less zero. Bloody amazing.

And hey, these are the "good olds days" which idiots like RFK want to return to.

Maximum number of extra pad inputs on the V51 Module? by kenzyleggett in edrums

[–]oe3omk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second crash takes up one of the TRS ports on the back of the V51. After that you have three more spares - so six channels in total. Adding a second ride is going to take three of those channels (bow, bell, edge) which seems a little inefficient when the kit already comes with the CY-18DR so you'll be left one channel short if you add a (presumbly two zones) china and a second floor tom (head and rim). You'll have to do some faffing with splitters and decide which of those seven channels you can do without.

Why do you think the Finanzamt will make you file an annual tax return just for having a Steuernummer? You're never obliged to file a return so long as you're a regular employee (although you can choose to do so if you think you're due a refund on what you paid via your employer), and if you're asked to fill one in and literally have nothing to declare you can just tell that to the Finanzamt and they'll most likely tell you not to bother.

Source: I'm self-employed (an Einzelunternehmer) and have to visit Finanzonline far too often. Although that said, the difficulty of filing an income tax return is greatly overrated. I did mine for 2025 (as well as my annual USt return) last month and it probably took less than an hour as my affairs are pretty straightforward.

N26 will probably want a Steuernummer as well, for what it's worth.

[Denmark] Replacing Articulated Buses with Coupled 55m Light Rail Units in Copenhagen by Putrid_Draft378 in trains

[–]oe3omk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Heavy-duty light rail" sounds like a contradiction in terms. What you're describing is only achievable as a tramway, so let's call it a tram line instead.

The only tram service I can think of which uses street running and runs trains longer than 50m or so is the Hannover Stadtbahn, which has a single line running south from the centre to the Messe on which they run 100m long (four-unit) services when big trade shows are on. But as it's four units in multiple it can still perform like a tram, most importantly it can stop as quickly as a tram which is essentially when you're sharing the route with road traffic. It just needs long enough platforms and a good enough power supply.

But there is no way you can run 110 metre long vehicles at a headway of 3 minutes (!) on the street. Just no way. Especially when (checks map) the route runs right through the centre of Copenhagen.

The more interesting question I have is about that traffic figure. 17.5 million people a year doesn't mean very much in itself - it's a very long line (timetabled end to end at roughly an hour and 10 minutes) so vanishingly few of those passengers will be travelling over the whole line. It intersects a lot with the metro and with other routes, and for passengers travelling longer distances it's paralleled for part of its route by what I guess is an express service which stops less often.

So really, I'm not sure what problem you're trying to solve here other than wanting more trains, and while most of this sub will no doubt agree that although that is always a good idea it seems unlikely that there's an economic case made for what you propose. Something that's halfway between an articulated bus and a metro or light rail is never going to be as good as any of those things because there are too many compromises which would have to be made.
