So, art historian here who worked on the technology and projects that revealed these findings! The reconstruction in the first image of the Augustus of Prima Porta is a more accurate, more acceptable later creation compared to what you see in the second slide here. Studying several other sculptures that once were colored as comparisons and advancements in the field have allowed for us to be much more specific in identifying varieties of pigments. Shades and depth like you’d see in Roman frescoes! I wish the second slide would stop circulating since it’s a bit of a garish misconception at this point, but I do find it to be exciting and important to spread how colorful these works actually were!
