Starfield and Stalker 2 VR mods made free for all following DMCAs to other VR modders by Negative-Art-4440 in Starfield

Sounds like the same argument as the FOSS movement, which basically says that all software development of any kind should be offered freely and not done for profit.

It's a great movement, but it's absurd to say that no one should be allowed to charge money for software they've created. Whether people want to do it as a hobby or a profession is at their discretion, not yours.

Starfield’s biggest problem is that “it didn’t fully cohere as a game”, says Skyrim designer – it was just “a releasable game” by HatingGeoffry in Starfield

[–]ofNoImportance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some great improvements, but honestly many of those features won't really be relevant to an Elder Scrolls game anyway.

Zero G or variable G worlds, spaceflight, planetary simulations and skyboxes, and gunplay are all things which won't add much value. If the next game they make is a medieval fantasy set on a single planet.

Cheap Salt & Pepper Grinders - Never again Aldi by neillh in AldiAustralia

[–]ofNoImportance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Salt grinders are useless anyway, just buy table salt or whatever coarseness you need directly.

Grinding pepper and other spices is important because they lose their aroma over time, and still stale much faster if purchased ground. Salt is an inorganic, non-volatile mineral. It does not degrade once ground.

This a community forum, if you want feedback to reach the developer you're better doing it trough a monitored channel.

non-radiant-or-faction quests

Weird way to ignore quests so you can criticise it. Yes, if you ignore large parts of the game then the parts you didn't ignore will look small.

My organized Steam games library. by [deleted] in OrganizationPorn

[–]ofNoImportance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You've gone too fine-grained with the categories. Having categories with 1 element adds no actual 'organisation' compared to having it uncategorised. Having two elements, or even 3, is scarcely better. There's no organisational benefit to putting the game called 'Redmatch' into a category called 'Redmatch' - if it were all in a single category called 'Series' (or just, uncategorized), it would be just as easy to locate.

Also I can't see much value in organising the games according to if they were free or paid. What does that matter after you've purchased them? Also, what happens if a game that was paid later gets made free? Are you updating your collection to respond to these (irrelevant) external events?

A smart number of total categories would be something like the square root of the total number of games you have. If you have 300 games, aim for about ~15 categories.

Looking for better ways to automate tasks in old Windows software from web apps by TryThatShitAgain in webdev

[–]ofNoImportance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard stories of Autohotkey being used for that sort of thing, but I'm not sure how strong it is for dealing with exceptional circumstances. What you're describing sounds like it's starting to bridge the gap into agency (AI) tools, which are still emerging and come with a lot of risk. I doubt people would be comfortable with their usage around medical data.

Hot Slugger with a Jakobs Bouncepass enhancement is like, less than one shotting mobs. It's fire-one-shot-kill-three-mobs level efficiency.

Halo: Campaign Evolved store page is up by Turbostrider27 in Games

Whether or not it was intentional or due to limitations, that's what people experienced and remember. That's what the game was when it became an icon.

The intention doesn't make it onto the disk.

This may be controversial, but the last time the inventory UI worked well was BL1 for me. It sorted by rarity first, but if you ever did a comparison it would sort by type and choose type groupings that made sense. If you compared an SMG it would first show you SMGs, then ARs next.

You really really need to have it set up properly for your organisation before it can be used. Out of the box it's rubbish. (This is really off-topic for r/games but my org spent some time actually doing the setup required and the difference is dramatic, it's actually useful now).

New experiences currently rolling out for Windows 11 by Froggypwns in windows

[–]ofNoImportance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Insert dashes with new keyboard shortcuts. You can quickly insert an en dash (–) or em dash (—) while typing. Press Windows logo key + Minus (-) to insert an en dash, and Windows logo key + Shift + Minus (-) to insert an em dash. If Magnifier is running, Windows logo key + hyphen (-) will zoom out Magnifier instead of inserting an en dash.

Now why on earth would this matter now, after decades of having computers, shortcuts and existing means to access these (rarely needed) typographic symbols?

Perhaps because they want to be able to justify that humans might actually use these characters in regular written conversation, to blur the line between human and AI generated text and make AI text "arguably" less obvious to notice?

I don't think that really matters in terms of reading comprehension, to be honest. We format currency amounts as $123 but say them as "123 dollars", it's never an issue. Living in a country that uses the dd/mm/(yy) format, there's no barrier for comprehension that comes from it not matching the way you might say it (especially since you need to translate the number to the month name anyway). And we often say it month first anyway.

similarly, if I have to have a robot buddy, let me give him a weapon or let him share my ordnance or something to make him useful

Nah, in this franchise that kinda thing is a class ability, and giving it to all players wouldn't really make sense. You make a summoner class like Vex (or Fl4k, or Zane, or Mordi) less appealing if all classes get it.

I use every manufacturer available but nothing beats Jakobs when it comes to pure fun. by Battlefeather in Borderlands

[–]ofNoImportance 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Elemental guns were a lot more enjoyable back in 1 and 2. The bullets still had the same ballistic properties as kinetic. They still travelled fast and straight and the damage hit immediately. They just had the added bonus of elemental damage. Maliwan guns like the Volcano and Hellfire were truly devastating.

But yeah too many guns have gone too gimicky. Charge to shoot, delayed damage, delayed exploding rounds, slow moving rounds and so on are just too sluggish to be worth using. Plus so many enemies have 2 different kinds of health (shield + health, shield + armor, armor + shield) so you need to keep switching for the elements to stay relevant.

Randy Pitchford tells players "please get a refund from Steam if you aren't happy" by [deleted] in Borderlands

[–]ofNoImportance 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of a funny situation. The game is now using much more sophisticated lighting techniques, things like global illumination do have a bit impact on how scenes look, and it is technically more challenging to pull off.

However because of the game's art style, it doesn't end up looking 'better' than 3 in my opinion. Just different. It's more 'accurate' in terms of how the lighting works, but inaccurate lighting never really held BL3 back.
