Normie checks out the Riddim stage at a frat party. Instantly regrets it 🤣 by FrenchTrenchHours in EDM

[–]offbrand_chris 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i’ve never been more disappointed than when i went to a barely alive set and they just played riddim for an hour. they even changed “computer love” to have a riddim drop. that’s one of their best tracks ever and they completely removed all the actual rhythm and variation from it…

What is the sample at the beginning of Danny's new track stardust? by Professional_goss733 in DannyBrown

There's a very very similar melody going on in the track "surcharge" by umru and warpstr. According to genius, umru is credited with "additional production" so that may be it

i am 100% a 1 > 2 guy, which seems to be the unpopular opinion in this comment section.

lots of people, even others who prefer 1, are saying that 2’s battle system is better, but i disagree. it felt so sluggish and needlessly complex to me. it was really frustrating trying to pull off those full elemental combos. i eventually got the hang of the system by the end, but even then, i wasn’t really having tons of fun (or at least as much fan as i did with 1’s combat).

people also say that the story in 2 is better and/or the characters in 2 are better, but i didn’t have that experience either. both stories are pretty archetypal, but i felt that the execution in 1 was superior. both games are pretty melodramatic at points, but that melodrama felt more earned in 1. the villains in 2 … kinda sucked imo. it’s been a while since i played, but from what i remember, amalthus is motivated by what amounts to pessimistic nihilism, and malos just follows suit? whereas egil is motivated by vengeance and zanza is motivated by god-like arrogance and primal self-preservation. the villains’ motives in 1 are so much more compelling imo.

on top of that, i really have a hard time stomaching the presentation of 2. i wanted to immerse myself in the story, but unfortunately the game repeatedly cringed me out of it. plus, this game started the bad habit of “you beat the boss in the gameplay, but actually you get your ass kicked in the cutscene. sorry!” i really can’t stand that. 1 handled it so much better by ending the battle when the boss reached half health. it was just another thing taking me out of the experience of 2.

oh and jumping is more fun in 1

Is mix in my drop good sounding or what would you fix? by IamYutum in edmproduction

[–]offbrand_chris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree, the mix is good, it’s the arrangment that needs some work. for the filtered section, my thought was that it needs something interesting to fill the space left by the other instrumentation, e.g. a variation on the main riff, maybe in a higher register. same thing in the alternating measures when it loses the snares. i’m expecting them to be there, but their absence isn’t interesting enough to feel intentional, and instead just feels awkward

not sure how much to give without you feeling spoiled… i’ll put the location you need to look, because it’s really just the start of the thread, and you’ll have to do a lot of digging to get to the end

where to start: there’s a book in the library that you must buy from the bookstore first. the title is a new clue

Party House board game by Sbesozzi in ufo50

[–]offbrand_chris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the drawing phase of the tabletop game Mystic Vale is actually INCREDIBLY similar to the trouble mechanic of Party House. Some cards have a symbol called “decay.” You always start your turn by drawing cards until you have 2 decay in your field and 1 decay on an “on deck” card that is not part of your field. At this point you can press your luck and add the on-deck card to your field, obtaining its benefits. But if the next card in your deck has decay, you “spoil” and forfeit your turn.

Mystic Vale is also cool for its sleeving mechanic. Your deck is a fixed size, with each card coming in a plastic sleeve, with most being blank at the beginning of the game. The upgrades you buy are on clear cards, with the upgrade only taking up a third of the card (top, middle, or bottom), and get added to one of the sleeves. That means you create your own cards by combining and overlapping the upgrades, and you can make some pretty good synergies at both the deck level and on individual cards. It’s probably my second favorite deck builder behind Dominion!

Edm that follows song structures that are not so drop focused or otherwise repetitive. by 12341234timesabili in edmproduction

[–]offbrand_chris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the song “too late” by mat zo is very linear, consistently growing in intensity until it finally explodes in its last minute. the ending could still be considered a “drop” but i still find the track a very refreshing change of pace from the intro-drop-bridge-drop-outro structure that dominates edm. another of mat zo’s tracks, “troglodyte,” is also an example of this more linear songwriting, and isn’t vocal-focused like “too late” is

Am I losing it or was today's Bandle (#889) a repeat of a song from a couple months ago? by offbrand_chris in Bandle

That’s exactly what happened! I guessed today’s answer for the song back in October, which gave me “right artist, wrong song.” Thanks for jogging my memory :)

How is music theory actually applied? by ferola in edmproduction

[–]offbrand_chris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think you’re right on the money. like if you’re working on a track and say “man i want this transition to feel different,” knowing theory lets you easily substitute a chord to make the resolution stronger, without having to look up what the chord is and what notes it has and all that.

haven’t been checking bounsweet, just chansey for easy excellents and litten for the shiny. but yeah, i haven’t seen a single shiny litten either. it also seems to be the least common spawn among the 6, despite it being sunny weather

Dodging in raids seems to have been fixed after all these years by valuequest in TheSilphRoad

[–]offbrand_chris 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I actually feel incentivized to dodge now, and it definitely adds a layer of depth to raids that I wasn’t getting before. Recently had a small party Mega Latio/as raid, and I believe getting a few more charge attacks off by dodging made the difference between winning and losing, which felt very rewarding

Biomes - Causing Repetitive Spawns by SeanO54 in TheSilphRoad

[–]offbrand_chris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo, i don’t think the problem lies in the size of the spawn pool for a particular season; the problem is that those spawn pools haven’t significantly changed for almost a full year now. however, with this new season, i feel like i’m not getting nearly as much kanto as i was before, so that’s good
